Everyone here keeps saying Sony will drop the price $50, Sony will drop the price $100, Sony won't drop the price etc... When NO ONE has considered that maybe Sony will increase the price.

I mean think about it, the PS4 is selling faster than the Nintendo Wii U and is more popular that Flixster. With that sort of momentum I think they can get away with a $50 price increase.

You guys need to think outside the box more.

Nintendo already beat everyone to that innovative strategy. The Wii U is more expensive in Japan than it was at launch! (thanks to taxes mostly, but still)... Also didn't Sony actually increase the price of the PS3 in Japan slightly for some reason?

And Nintendo has the best selling home console this Gen! Price increase is a viable strat

Sad state of affairs in JP all around

Hell, ESO is more of an Elder Scrolls game with MMO elements than an MMO with Elder Scrolls elements.

I don't think I've disagreed with any statement I've ever seen on neogaf more than I do this one.

ESO is only an Elder Scrolls game because they figured it would sell copies that way. Slap a few lore locations and races on a totally generic run-of-the-mill MMORPG and capitalize on the name.

It is not an Elder Scrolls game in any other fashion.

Maybe I should've said the way I play it is more like a regular game in the series than just some MMO.

349.99 PS4 will hit first.

Yeah, maybe with 2 games. But there will be a $299 SKU.

$100 this year?

Avatar bet?

BTW... you think a "real fire" isn't already going at MS?

Sure, avatar bet if you want.

And I don't think MS are in crisis atm with XB1 sales. Things should be much worse in the US but two things are helping them: Sony isn't being really aggressive with price and the Wii U is non-existent as a competitor this gen. It also doesn't hurt to have a monstrous marketing budget. Normally, with how badly the whole XB1 product was conceived and introduced, it would have been buried and out for the count. But as this is basically a two-console gen, it has been allowed to pick up sales in the PS4's wake as the market is easily big enough to support two consoles selling well as last gen the market supported three.

I doubt Bethesda has a real turd in the chamber like Ubisoft did with AC Unity last year. Fallout 4 will probably be the second best selling multiplatform game of Nov/Dec after Black Ops III. Something like that getting bundled so early on does not seem likely to me. If I had to guess at an Xbone pack in, it would be Tomb Raider.

Fall out 3 shipped 4.7 million units in 2008 and conservative estimates put Battlefront at shipping 9 to 10 million. I think Fallout will do great, but double Fallout 3? Not likely, especially the same year Star wars episode VII launches.

All they have to say is that it's from the people who made Skyrim.

It's official: WiiU reaches DC

edit:
4.01m DC
4.07m WiiU

Wii U should pass Dreamcast WW in the next few months.

I think it's already ahead of Dreamcast's last sales numbers we got for each region before it went to the bomba bin Big Lots closeout sale and you could get a Dreamcast for $70.

It already passed the Dreamcast worldwide back in 2014.

In the US it still has a couple of months to go before it passes the Dreamcast as that graph above is wrong.

Eh, I think the Xbox One would more than likely be doing similar even if the Wii U was doing better. The Wii regularly sold 3-4 times what the PS3 did during the first half of last gen but the PS3 still managed to catch up with the 360 in overall sales even with its negativity due to the strength of the Playstation brand with core gamers in areas outside of North America.

We are seeing a similar situation with the Xbox One but it's for North America instead of areas outside of North America. The brand's popularity with core gamers in America last gen has helped Xbox One (pick up in) sales.

At first I thought that but I'm starting to move the needle more towards it being more elder scrolls. If the lore was more superficial I might agree but it's just packed with so much elder scrolls lore that it's hard for me to not see it as more ES

It should be remembered that the Dreamcast was still slowly selling consoles when Sega pulled the plug after quickly realizing they could not compete with the PS2.

The big difference is that Sega was reporting massive financial losses to the point that they wanted to sell the company to Microsoft. Nintendo has the luxury of being a competent and financially successful company, so supporting the lagging Wii U is viable.

With lack of numbers i feel interest in NPD threads has surely decreased considerably. Anyway XBO is doing amazing in my view and keeping itself within fighting distance. Sony USA needs to perform better in term of advertisement and deals and promotions and bundles.

But competition is surely good for the consumer

Nah, this wont happen in the US. Things will stay the same: Sony will try to keep the 399 pricepoint with bundles and limited editions, and have periodic sales at 349 with games, plus, etc. There has been great sales for the PS4 and XBO. Amazon just had the PS4 with Witcher, Batman, and 1yr plus for $399.

So confused. X1 is doing amazing but Sony needs to do better even though they sell more at a higher price?

Competition is good but it was the early sales disparity that got us all these X1 bundles and sales.

Shouldn't those DC numbers be adjusted to account for today's market size? That's something that always bugs me with these comparisons, they don't account for market inflation.

We always account for price inflation but can't do the same when the actual market size of participants is larger than back then? Doesn't line up well IMHO.

Yup, The Wii U was a commercial failure but it's something that Nintendo could withstand and something they've been able to keep going with. After all the Wii U has had great first party software sales and is still selling at its launch price. I could write a whole piece on the Wii U but I'm too tired.

Anyway, for anyone that is interested, here is the actual LTD numbers for the dreamcast in the US/Worldwide-

USA
3.48m - SEGA Dreamcast
0.24m - SEGA Dreamcast (SPORTS BUNDLE)
0.15m - SEGA Dreamcast (NEW SPORTS BUNDLE)
0.12m - SEGA Dreamcast (Smash pack bundle)
0.11m - SEGA Dreamcast (Sonic bundle & Sonic memory card bundle)

SEGA Dreamcast (ALL) = 4.10 million

Worldwide
2.86m - Japan & Asia
4.64m - North America
1.63m - Other

SEGA Dreamcast worldwide shipments - 9.13m

I personally am not as interested mainly because it's the slow months. Everyone knows PS4 is going to win almost every month of the year except for a couple of holiday ones (and the random April one). It is also pretty easy to look at which games will take top spot since there are only a few coming out a time. Interest will pick up around September.

Why XBO is doing amazing and PS4 needs perform better?

It is the opposite... XBO needs to get the game up (more advertisement, deals, promotions and bundles) while PS4 is doing amazing.

PS4 is winning if you didn't understand yet.

Some forget (probably on purpose) that Sony comes from a place where they were outsold nearly 2:1 in the US last generation.
Some saying that the PS4 "struggles" when it not only made up the gap but is selling significantly better than the XBox on its home turf... That's some next level analysis really.

Those numbers are wrong.

Which is weird because you say those numbers are up to 2006 but your graph shows the DC stopped selling in December 2001. The Dreamcast continued selling a bit after then.

It was selling less than 1k a month after December, do you have monthly sales?

my time with it in single player was pretty much the same as any elder scrolls, with a few caveats. i don't know where this sentiment keeps coming from

anyway as for ESO, i didn't expect it to do good as it did. glad to see it do well, they've taken a lot of strides the past year

they really could have come out with a third model for $49.99 in 2010 and sold millions of those.
Hell, given the trajectory they may have sold more PS2's after the launch of Wii/360/PS3 than the gens market leader. They were already at a close fourth place for the gen. Selling around 50 million of the things after the 360 launched.
And at the same time, rebrand the PS3 to PS2 2.

Disagreed.

Disagreed. There is competition -- people are already choosing what they like. What you're referring to is some sort of forced parity, despite the fact that the market has decidedly spoken on what they want.

Also, the PS2 generation was overwhelmingly a generation of domination the likes we've never seen, and yet it was a golden age for gaming.

So with consoles losing the casual market to smarts devices, by the fall of the wii, and abandoning kinect, How do they expand back into that space?

The person or company that figures this out will win.
Say what you want about the motion control phase it added 100k people last gen.

They don't need them because they aren't loyal and dependable customers. Every player bar Nintendo will make far more money this gen than the last anyways.

VR has a decent shot at it within the next few years but by and large they won't be coming back.

Yup, If we just count the PS2 shipments from the 360 launch date the total was over 55 million additional PS2's shipped between Q4 2005 - Q4 2010, this is on top of the already 95 million or so PS2's shipped before Q4 2005.

This chart is a bit different as it looks at cumulative total sales for PS3 and 360 from launch, but for PS2 it just counts the cumulative sales from the launch of the other consoles. So from when the 360 launched to the end of 2010 there were 56 million additional PS2's sold, and from when the PS3 launched to the end of 2010 there were around 43 million additional PS2's sold. So even the PS3 struggled against the PS2 sales for some time.

As you can see the Xbox 360 could not match PS2 sales at all from launch through 2010. This is highly impressive as the PS2 already had 5 years of sales before the 360 launch and an already large 95 million install base. In essence the PS2 was the competition to the 360 and PS3 alongside the Wii in the early years haha.

PS2_zps3z6i7bgj.jpg

PS22_zpsox7psvy2.jpg

In other words, PS2 was a beast.

Thank you for the graphs Zhuge!

If Sony had dropped the price of the PS2 down to $49.99, I really do think they would have had another 100 million units to sell. Making PS2 the market leader for two separate generations.

Alas. We didn't get that level of crazy.

There's alot of downplay about PS4's success in the U.S. compared to XB1. 360 outsold PS3 every single month and was millions ahead early on. What's happening this generation is more of a success for Sony than for MS.

You can't forget things like this-

http://www.cnet.com/news/xbox-360-hits-10-million-sold-in-u-s/

Look at these results

In the U.S., according to NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier--as of the end of March, Microsoft's rivals, Nintendo, and Sony had sold 8.8 million Wiis and 4.1 million PlayStation 3's in the United States, respectively .

Saying PS4 needs to do better is ridiculous. It's MS that needs to gain back all that they've lost.
