Thank you for the graphs Zhuge!

If Sony had dropped the price of the PS2 down to $49.99, I really do think they would have had another 100 million units to sell. Making PS2 the market leader for two separate generations.

Alas. We didn't get that level of crazy.
The production facility costs were too high to sustain. Sony needed the consolidated capacity once it shifted the ps3 to 299. Sony would have run the PS2 forever had it not been in financial troubles.

With lack of numbers i feel interest in NPD threads has surely decreased considerably. Anyway XBO is doing amazing in my view and keeping itself within fighting distance. Sony USA needs to perform better in term of advertisement and deals and promotions and bundles.

But competition is surely good for the consumer

There's alot of downplay about PS4's success in the U.S. compared to XB1. 360 outsold PS3 every single month and was millions ahead early on. What's happening this generation is more of a success for Sony than for MS.

You can't forget things like this-

http://www.cnet.com/news/xbox-360-hits-10-million-sold-in-u-s/

Look at these results

In the U.S., according to NPD Group analyst Anita Frazier--as of the end of March, Microsoft's rivals, Nintendo, and Sony had sold 8.8 million Wiis and 4.1 million PlayStation 3's in the United States, respectively .

Saying PS4 needs to do better is ridiculous. It's MS that needs to gain back all that they've lost.
We all know first to 10 million wins, this holiday will be interesting :p

Brilliant analysis. Second place? They did amazing but first place? They clearly need to perform better. Maybe with a little work they can be in second place next month, because that's clearly where they would like to be. In fighting distance.

Sony has only managed to hit second tier 1st place, not first tier 1st place. How do they achieve first tier 1st place? By doing better. What does better mean?
You tell me.

Obviously, Sony hasn't been flawless this gen, but which company ever was? Both Sony and MS have rooms for improvement, but MS is the one that has way more room if the US cumulative sales are anything to go by.

So with consoles losing the casual market to smarts devices, by the fall of the wii, and abandoning kinect, How do they expand back into that space?

The person or company that figures this out will win.
Say what you want about the motion control phase it added 100k people last gen.
I think the casual market will come when PS4 gets cheaper to buy. PS4 is $400, but it should get more casual buyers as it gets to the $300 and $200 price points. It won't be like Wii's casual audience though and more like PS2's casual audience in later years.

But I thought Xbone won E3 according to Amazon and social media? And surely the backwards compatibility announcement would smite the PS4?

So much for that.
Backwards compatibility was never a huge thing in terms of boosting hardware sales. Even Sony had ditched PS2 BC within later PS3 models.

I'm really not getting why some think backwards compatibility will make much of a difference in terms of sales. It'll barely be a blip on the radar. People will be buying XB1s for CoD, Battlefront, AC and other big third party titles this holiday. Not to play some old ass games.
And then face an outrage when people realize the truth? You can't just play any 360 game on Xbone.

Either way, I think people overestimate the effect B/C would have on sales. "Play old games" isn't something most people care about these days.
It meant that price sold more PS3s than the ability to play PS2 games.
I agree. Only a very small minority of people will care about having backwards compatibility. It doesn't work that way in the real world. It never had.

Otherwise, PS3 & Wii U would've seen huge increases of install bases with it. And they both came off of very popular predecessors.

Considering X1 will have extremely limited BC it's not a big deal at all.

Wonder how the Batman PS4 Bundles did in the UK & Europe. Do they like Batman as much as here?

If so, then I just realized PS4 sales might have increased the WW gap since MS didn't care enough to make the free game deal and trade in deals for their tier 2 countries.

PS3 was in a bad spot since it was $200 more than the competition. Wii U was in a bad spot simply because the system doesn't/didn't have many new games and wasn't a "next gen leap" above what many people already had (360/PS3).

The Xbox One is cheaper than the competition, and has a solid lineup of games/regular releases (due to it having solid third party support). It's a different situation. While I don't think it's going to be a HUGE deal, it should definitely help sales if MS advertises it well as it will help to make the Xbox One a more logical choice/better value this Holiday season for some who played on the Xbox 360 last gen.

Don't see how one could say this without knowing what games the system will actually support when the feature's officially released. Simply having a good number of the best selling 360 games will be attractive to some people. Some current gen game releases coming with a free copy of that game's last gen predecessor (e.g.: Fallout and Rainbow Six) will also be attractive for people who are interested in a series but never played any of the games before.

There's Thousands of 360 games If only 100 are BC games That is the definition of limited.

Excluding the month in which the console was released in, has any console sold 1m or more in a single month?

PS4 increases the worldwide gap every month. XB1 would have to heavily outsell the PS4 in the USA to make up the difference.

Unless you meant USA gap. Xb1 might have won without the ps4 batman bundle. Then again you could get batman for free with xb1 purchase launch week.

To expand on this, the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 a total of 10 times (months) out of the 99 months both the PS3 and 360 have been out that we know of (up to January 2015).

+100, and they will add more over time.
Still very limited True BC most games should work not a selected few.

WOW!!! Isn't PS3 slightly ahead of 360? If so, im shocked because those 10 monthly wins must have been by a huge gap or those 89 monthly losses must have been minimal.

Must admit that I was fully expecting price drops for 360 and PS3 at this past E3. With both consoles in the 80m range, you would think that both would want to surpass the 100m worldwide mark, especially Sony since that would make three consoles in a row to surpass the 100m mark worldwide.

"Casual market" doesn't just look at prices folks. They look at software. In fact that's the biggest thing they look for: something to compel them - software/applications that are geared toward them. You may wish to seperate the Wii and ps2 casuals (wrongly IMO) but both picked up the devices for the breadth of software geared toward things that aren't pretty much solely young males. That ecosystem of software is barely represented on consoles currently, and sales (and tails) are going to reflect that if it continues.

I was referring to NPD months, and not worldwide, and even then both are more or less tied.

Does that include November and December separately? In other words, Nov 1st-30th and Dec 1st-31st?
NPD doesn't track months like that, but on a 4-4-5 week base, where two months have 4 weeks of tracking and then a 5 week tracking month, and then the cycle repeats. November has 4 weeks of tracking and December has 5.

And yes, separately. Xbox One did 1.23m in November 2014 and then another 1.3m the very next December

I don't think anybody can. VR could be something but will never be cheap enough for the masses. Basically they need to just expand the core market.

Well, it is the impetus for publishers on consoles to make more unique content that will appeal to people beyond the young male gamer. For example, one of the best sellers on consoles currently is Minecraft even disregarding its success on PC and mobile, and that certainly isn't selling by appealing to the young male gamer nor does it require motion controls, a touchscreen, or being F2P. In regards to games currently out and games that have been announced, PS4 is the console that has the best chance of achieving success with casual gamers. I actually see the XB1 having a tougher time, since its audience, currently, seems pretty much limited to the young male gamer demographic.

I'm thinking, at $299, and with Star Wars Battlefront hysteria, the PS4 could shift 1.5m November or December 2015.

Software sales are nearly all in favour of Sony. That's the area where the money is made for all companies and the main reason Microsoft won the last generation. It would be nice to know if digital software sales will continue to rise quickly.

News flash, the corevis not exspanding. I think the core peaked last gen. You could only expand the core by doing somthing like, bring apple over with its fans, into the cconsole race.
