Witcher 3 PC Performance Thread

Still getting random crashes in this game. Not sure if its the Nvidia driver causing it, or the driver crash is just a side effect of the game crashing.

The only OC I have going is a really modest OC of my 2500K @ 4.0 Ghz. When I got crashes while figuring out my OC initially, crashes due to an unstable cpu OC always ended up in a blue screen. I'm assuming the game crashing probably wouldn't be due to my cpu OC then?

Game runs super well otherwise. I'm at 1080p with everything on Ultra except Hairworks off and Foliage Visibility on High and I get a mostly locked 60fps. 970 handles it well, just the random crashes are really annoying.

The game is really sensitive to GPU overclocks, not sure if CPU overclock effects the game but my i5 2500k seems fine at 4.4Ghz. I can't play the game at all with my GPU overclocked though even a very small overclock kills the game, it just crashes every 5 minutes.

I have a MSI GTX 760 Twin Frozr Gaming Edition (excellent overclocker) but this game hates even the smallest of overclocks. Is your GPU factory overclocked? I have seen people report that crashing the game and they have to under clock their card to get it to work.

Hopefully 1.07 helps this issue.

Its an EVGA GTA 970 SSC, so yes it is factory OC'ed. I've never messed with GPU overclocking though so I'm reluctant to mess with it...

It's pretty easy. Find out the 970 stock core and memory speeds. Download and install MSI Afterburner. Run the program, move the core / memory slider (left => downlock & right => overclock) or manually type a number in the box and hit enter key, hit apply and done. What you want to do is set it to the stock speeds to rule out possible crashing due to unstable overclocking. If you want to change it back, just hit reset and click apply.

I overclock both of my 970 STRIX cards and my CPU and don't crash very often. The one scenario which seems to cause it for me is rainy daytime in Novigrad.

That tweet was posted around noon EST, so technically they could release it tomorrow morning and still be comfortably in that range.

Very true, still a lot of time left, just figured it would be a weekday so they could manage any issues with distro for the GOG version at least.

Or what he said above me ^

Fair enough, like I said, I have seen some people report that the game hates their factory overclocked card, having to underclock it to stop the crashes and the game hates my overclock too but we shouldn't need to underclock our GPU to get a game to work.

Hopefully CDPR can offer a solution or Nvidia can fix it their end with a new driver update.

Performance seems the same or maybe slightly better to me. The stuttering that occurs when panning with the camera with a mouse seems to be a little better??

I'm just going to post these as they come in, but here are the hard numbers I'm getting. Here is my exact hardware setup along with drivers / overclocks and such. Each area was benchmarked at 7pm game time with clear weather using FRAPS for 120 seconds while running around encircling the area.

Abandoned Village
Min: 45.0 (1.06, Win8.1) 46.0 (1.07, Win8.1) 47.0 (1.07, Win10)
Max: 54.0 (1.06, Win8.1) 55.0 (1.07, Win8.1) 54.0 (1.07, Win10)
Avg: 49.7 (1.06, Win8.1) 50.4 (1.07, Win8.1) 50.2 (1.07, Win10)

Hierarch Square
Min: 48.0 (1.06) 46.0 (1.07)
Max: 60.0 (1.06) 60.0 (1.07)
Avg: 53.0 (1.06) 56.7 (1.07)

Byways
Min: 40.0 (1.06) 41.0 (1.07)
Max: 50.0 (1.06) 51.0 (1.07)
Avg: 44.4 (1.06) 45.1 (1.07)

Crookback Bog
Min: 37.0 (1.06) 43.0 (1.07)
Max: 52.0 (1.06) 53.0 (1.07)
Avg: 45.9 (1.06) 46.8 (1.07)

I would trust the Abandoned Village and Byways numbers the most as there are fewer variables in the area. After messing with the Movement Response, there is a negligible performance difference between the two.

I have question I have some tweaks done to my user.ini file so as per instructions I have it set to read mode only, would I have to set it to normal for patch to take effect?

That's were I'm noticing some improvement too, no hitching or stuttering for me during the 15 minutes or so of me running around, not enough data to be conclusive but it seems good.

With the new patch the framerate seems to be locked at 60 fps max??? I have VSync disabled and a 144hz GSync monitor but can never go above 60 fps for some reason.

Did you set the option for Unlimited FPS? The patch reset most of my settings and I had to take it off too.

Anyone figure out what the best quality/performance is for Hairworks with patch 1.07? A few options now, not really sure what "High" and "Low" do. Still not sure I like hairworks better than the default hair.

Even with the absolute lowest settings, I'm still taking ~8fps hit in the least demanding areas of the game, though I'm only running a 770. Honestly, I don't care for the look even if I could run it smoothly. Didn't really tinker that much after that.

so let me get this straight, if we were using the superior feline armor set at level 26, we now have to remove the set and then either hope that we have a backup set or craft the enhanced set again?

Pretty much. It let me use my higher level armor I had on before the patch though. It was when I unequipped it that i couldn't reequip it so I could have kept using it if I never took my armor off haha

This game is amazing. So much to do, it's beautiful, and so many stories..

I hope the saga continues

I've only had my 970 for a few days...is there a recommended driver to use right now for Witcher 3? I tried the W3 game ready drivers, and the latest hotfix drivers. I actually went back to the W3 drivers after experiencing some artifacts in the game, but it turned out to be my overclock. I'm still testing things, it was working fine in other games, but W3 seems to be more sensitive about it. I guess it does push the GPU damn hard.

Just use the latest driver. And yeah, I OCed my 970 a bit and it registers 99% usage when I run W3 so it is a demanding game.

I noticed maybe a slight performance increase with my 970. I'm on the GTA drivers till the next whql. I'm not sure how much of a big gain I get with w3 dirvers, but it felt smoother to me without so far. I'm gonna have to try again in this one forest area that was giving me 30 fps. I'm not currently in a playthrough, so the game just keeps getting better for me before I even get to it proper.

If anyone has a comparison of performance between drivers for this game link please!

The latest patch seems to have reset all of my video settings in-game. Also, the game isn't recognized in my Geforce Experience Panel anymore. No idea why not.

Microstutter is back, though turning down some effects reduces it somewhat.

Holy crap, the alternative movement feels so much better! The delay when you start moving Geralt is gone and it's very responsive now.

Does anyone know what the HairWorks Preset option is? I decided to turn HairWorks for everything on and put all the settings to low (zero AA and Low preset) and it looks pretty good with SMAA.

Tried the new AMD 15.7 drivers with the new patch and the water effects are still bugged with Crossfire enabled, but the weird reflection flickers seem to have been fixed. Looks like I'll be waiting for Pascal before I play this game properly again.

There is something wrong with the camera/sensitivity; it feels like input lag or increased mouse sensitivity. Combined with fps drops, that new camera thing is making the game nearly unplayable for me (it is similar to having high frame-timing, input lag and mouse acceleration at the same time).

I am not noticing any increase in performance, and Inn At Crossroads is still a bad FPS place.I am also noticing worse performance in Novigrad; I could be wrong on that. Hairworks is finally viable, but I will skip on it; it looks horrible on Geralt but nice on other things (note that my gtx 780 can't get a locked 60fps).

They nerfed Witcher gear or just made it for higher levels now, but if you already have it equipped since 1.06, they won't be taken off.

Note: fuck Nvidia.

Seems they fixed the 30fps in game lock. Its now a smooth "console-like" 30fps for me without having to do anything extra in Nvidia control panel. Only checked it out when messing with settings and maxing hairworks.

Other than that performance seems similar to pre-patch for me, which was good. Just having the game minimize every so often is annoying me. Anyone else getting this?

All of my ultra-low settings with the Hunter's Config got messed up by the new patch. Restoring things to how they were pre-patch yields worse performance than it did on 1.06. It was enjoyable before if not a bit ugly, now the game is just about unplayable. I guess I'll have to start saving for a new computer!

Having just got a 970 after a 670, running the game at mostly 60fps certainly feels weird lol.

I knocked everything back to High and get mostly solid 60 with some dips into high 50's. Feels good man.

You should be able to turn up textures, detail level, background characters and water quality up to Ultra at least. Turn shadows down to medium(no real difference to High or even Ultra).

[Sorry for the crosspost, I just realized that this is the right thread for this]

Been playing with the options a bit after installing 1.07.
I have no difference at all with hairworks on and off, and maxed out. But I seem unable to reach steady 60fps as I was able to before the 1.07... they stay at 45-50, with peaks here and there.
Even lowering a bit other options didn't change in a perceptible manner. Only exception was the foliage distance (from ultra to high) which had quite a noticeable impact. Got an i7 and a GTX970, using FRAPS to monitor them.
Does anyone have any non-obvious tip on how to raise my fps count to 60?

Hairworks has a big hit. You should notice the hit. They added a new preset for AA for hair works. So make sure hairworks is off. Shadows high is another thing you can change. Barely noticeable change from ultra to high.

Yes, this is the first thing I noticed. I play with a controller with VSync off, and as of 1.07 the input lag makes it feel like I'm playing with VSync on.
