There's a great article on Eurogamer about one of the last real arcade nexus in China. They all got some of the best Chinese STG players, with all the real PCBs, hanging on to dear life. The journalist asking about a player's favorite and least favorite shmup got a good chuckle out of me.
crazy awesome article and cool to read more about it - I love WC's ikaruga bashing lol. skykid was just talking back in May about his experience playing with those exact players in shanghai. I wonder if he had anything to do with the article.

edit: holy shit, he's the one that wrote it. that's awesome as hell.

Geez all these shumps which they are coming on Steam, but I want Rayforce on Steam... no wait I need Rayforce on Steam, even better if they release a trilogy on Steam.
Only god knows how much I love that series.
It would be a sin if I make a wish in this thread?
Also I really want to try R-Gear, the original Rayforce sequels we never get.

Raiden Fighter Jet
Castle Shikigami 2
Pink Sweets Arrange
Akai Katana
Deathsmiles 2X
Crimzon Clover World Ignition
Jamestown
Trouble Witches Neo
Espgaluda 2
Eden's Aegis

Doesn't matter what games are the best, most balanced, or whatever. These ones ALWAYS leave me feeling happy and fulfilled. I enjoy them all for so many reasons. From the awesome bullet pattern control of Trouble Witches NEO, to the rewarding Bullet Cancels in Eden's Aegis. From the amazing scoring rhythms of Akai Katana/Deathsmiles 2x/Crimzon Clover to the intensity of Raiden Fighters Jet.From the bullet grinding of Shiki 2 to the challenge of gimmicking the bonuses in Pink Sweets by letting some drop...I just love them all.

My biggest challenges on that list...Crimzon Clover World Ignition and Pink Sweets Arrange. My biggest joys are Akai Katana Slash, and Eden's Aegis.

I think Akai Katana is cool as hell but somehow I find it to be the most difficult STG i've got.

Sup folks. Someone on the shmup groups posted a really neat pattern from a shmup and as it turns out their 13 year old kid made this shmup. The thing is it has some really cool enemy wave patterns and such. Check it out.

Its cheap, its old school, and its pretty fun. Pretty simple, and for a kid that young its impressive they made something that clicks and has a bit of an addiction factor trying to level up. Got some fun powerups and in general its just one I'd like to push for some relaxing fun to support a very young indie dev. $5 and well worth it.

My top ten as of 2015:

1. Mushihimesama Futari Black Label
2. Ketsui
3. Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu 1.5
4. Pink Sweets Arrange
5. Crimzon Clover World Ignition
6. Espagaluda II Black Label
7. Resogun
8. Mamoru-kun wa Norowaretteshimatta PS3 Version
9. Dodonpachi Saidaioujou Arrange
10. Senko no Ronde DUO

Really into Ketsui at the moment.

Honestly, most of my Top 10 if I wasn't trying to keep it rounded and varied could consist mostly out of Raizing games. I really like Bakraid, although I think Garegga is the superb game if I had to choose.

One of my favortie shmups is a Galaga clone called "Better dead than Alien" and no one here has played it :p

Edit : And yes, I know it sucks, but I grew up playing it on my Amiga :p

Same with Hybris, Project X, Agony, X-Out and Z-Out, Apidya and so on!

Grabbed Soldner-X and Soldner X-2 Final Prototype bundle. I saw a different Soldner bundle though...am I missing content?

Also go to Steam today folks. Mobile Light Force is out for $3.75 and I got that plus Don'Yoku in all its bullet cancel glory to keep me happy today :)

So how are these Steam PSX releases? I'm a little curious.

Also, Gradius Collection does NOT work on the Playstation TV. It works on the Vita (and is honestly probably as good as handheld STGs can get with that OLED and d-pad), so I'm pretty surprised the TV won't run it.

Made a thread for an indie shmup made by the Satazius folks that stole my heart.

Supercharged Robot Vulkaiser

I had a lot of fun with this and wanted to share because its an easy to pick up, and play shmup designed to be 1cc-ed and to introduce gamers to that mentality. Plus it has a lot of charm to draw folks to the genre. Anyhow have fun and take a look. :)

Confession time. I think a lot of modern STGs are ugly. That includes the last handful of DDP titles. While others do look good to me. Ikaruga and the latter Raiden games come to mind in that regard.

But personally sprites > polygons or pre-rendered models any day.

Sol Divide is on Steam, lol. Looks like some rando publisher got the rights and has released the emulated PSX version?

Wonder how the emulation is.

This game is such a riot. There's something about the game that's extremely funny to me. Still own my PSX copy, too. Picked up the Steam ver. for the hell of it last night and gave it a run. Forgot how AMAZING the OST was! Can't speak on how well the emulation is, but it appears to play/perform no different than the original game.

Can't go back after rotating the monitor for these games. *Click on or open image in new tab to see full size*

Even heavily pixelated. Playing on a 27 in monitor a few feet back is a huge enjoyment than what I've been doing for decades.

like arcade sticks, there's no going back

I find that sometimes, analog sticks mimic the arcade experience a lot more closely these days that digital dpads.

I know I play Tatsujin a lot better with an analog stick (which acts digital anyway) than with a regular MD or PCE pad.

That's pretty interesting. I haven't tried an analog stick in a digital-only game in years, but I was never a fan of it. Then again, I think I formed that opinion during the Dreamcast era, and there are... better analog sticks out there today, lol.

so lately i've been thinking about that rumored dariusburst ac ex ps4 port that was being talked about on shmups a few months ago, and coincidentally eurogamer just put up a pretty good article about it to make the wait that much harder for me.

come on, taito. don't leave me hanging! i wanna play this so bad...

Just my knee-jerk reaction as I haven't played it but it looks more like a dual stick shooter like Geometry Wars than your traditional shmup, even though it looks like you can't shoot in any direction. I am just talking general design sensibilities, not strict sub-genre designations.
