70-80% of Splatoon players use motion controls two months after launch

I'm afraid I'm just too old, curmudgeonly and set in my ways - at the ripe old age of twenty-three - to adapt. It's a pity but I still seem to do very well using the sticks.

Surprised at this number. Once I'm playing normally again I'll try to learn the gyro controls and get used to them.

I use them and primarily use the paintbrush. It's far too unwieldy for me to be mashing the trigger, jumping wildly and fine tune my aim with the right stick. I could probably claw it but I can't imagine it would be as precise or as comfortable.

I find the implementation super natural. My cousin immediately switched it off. Both of us find the game awesome to play.

i hate it cause it needs extra input from my body.
When i'm done with work i want to sit on the couch however i want to.

I am not forcing myself to take a certain pose and control how i move my hands.

For this fact alone the controls are flawed and old school tactile feedback is infinitely better.

Same for 3D. NO I AM NOT WEARING GLASSES
Glassless 3D. NO I AM NOT FORCING MY HEAD TO NOT MOVE QUICKLY.
VR NO I WANT TO LOOK QUICKLY AT MY PHONE.

when all these gimmick things get fixed wake me up :)

Seriously, if you don't use them or don't like them, force yourself to go through a good portion of the single-player with gyro controls. Then you'll never go back.

You use the stick for horizontal camera movements, then gyro for small adjustments and vertical aiming.

It seems you're using them wrong. Only use them for vertical aiming and small adjustments

You shouldn't be using gyro to turn. You should use the right stick to pan horizontally and the gyro for vertical movement and precision aim.

I'm not intentionally using it to move horizontally, but it happens accidentally and completely throws off my aim.

You can use the right analog stick stick for rotating, most people do.

You don't use 100% motion controls; you use the sticks/buttons to get in a range and tweak with the gyro controls. We've all had instances in stick based shooters trying to shoot something but the sticks cause the aim to pass over the object each time or take a bit more time to tweak.

Instead you do it automatically together; allowing very quick play.
Even if I do know that, I still do the damn turn, my brain sucks I guess :p

That's the thing tho, I have issues trying to coordinate that haha

Yeah might be my problem as well, but at 38 is even harder.

Isn't it harder to jump and aim with dual analog though?

You essentially can't aim and jump. That, coupled with the lack of aim assist, different sensitivies for y and x axis and slight deadzone means using the stick is an uphill battle. Nintendo should really fix that, to be honest...

Power of the default.

Several use cases have shown that most users will keep the default settings of a system or platform regardless of any advantages offered by customizing them.

Stick user here. Simply because I like to sit/lie in positions that makes motion controls a bit annoying. But it works well and I'm glad they have both options.

Trying to kick the habit of using sticks in this game is tough until you realize you're getting destroyed by stealth rollers over and over again. I will learn.

Next Splatfest, motion v non motion

Lock controls to whichever team someone is on, disregard the scores for popularity

gyro controls are the objectively superior way to play the game. once they click there's no going back.

the sad thing is that in 2015 millions of people around the world are having a blast using the gamepad. this should have been a launch game ;__;

I made a thread about this recently. I'm now level 20 and about 70% of my time with the game was spent playing with gyro, including the entire single player. I can't get used to it. I just can't.

I don't own a New 3DS, so I don't have a lot of experience with it, but the demo units with the autocorrecting 3D worked pretty well for me.

i got it here. ;)
If you look away from the screen it looses it's 3d only takes a fraction of a second to enable 3d again. But it's still not perfect.

So yeah still not perfect.

I hate gyro controls, but there's something very off about Splatoons non motion controls, so I've had to use the gyro.
Normal doesn't feels as tight as say Gears or Uncharted. Like they sabotaged them so you'd have to choose gyro.

the reason the non motion controls are off is because you can only edit the speed of the Y axis and there is no auto aim.

I don't see what the advantage is with a roller. I can definitely see it with the guns but otherwise I think using a roller is more about planning ahead where you are going to paint than anything else.

High level Splatoon players mostly use the fling-ink move to splat players in ranked play. Being able to quickly make adjustments vertically and horizontally (or even turn 180 degrees) during the roller slam-down motion is essential to being competitive.

Never had issues with the gyrocontrols. Already embraced them in the stresstest during April. They are way more precisely and faster than the analogue stick.

My wife and daughters don't use motion controllers as they use the paint roller. I assume its the younger audience or less experienced gamers who don't use them...

actually I'd assume differently. the younger generation is the mobile gaming generation and many mobile games use tilt controls. if I had to wager a guess I'd say that the younger audience is probably more experienced with tilt controls than dual analog controls.

it's probably older gamers who aren't using them. those people who are too experienced with dual analog controls to switch to something new and different, even if it is the better way to control the game.

Using gyro is important for a roller because you splat enemies mostly with flicking the roller, no one really roll over enemies anymore like people did at the beginning. And if you don't have quick and precise while flicking, you're not going to splat your enemies in one hit and they're going to run out of your range fast. Take the dynamo as an example, in one flick motion you often have to do more than 90 degrees rotation because enemies are going to try hard to run to your side.

I use the gyro aiming. It's not bad, but requires an adjustment. It looks like most players are capable of learning the scheme.

Rather than give up on it, I'd honestly rather get good using it.

Truth.
Also, some of us are using the sticks because we can't use the gyro. =/

More importantly 63% of idiots picked Eating over Sleeping in Splatfest. So despite Sleeping winning more matches, Eating won overall... Boo!

it takes a bit getting used to like every new motion related thing

But it is vastly superior to analog input for aiming

Those games assist your aiming. Splatoon doesn't have auto aim which you could realize more quickly if you played shooters on the PC which also never needed auto aim.

The best compliment I can pay the controls is that I don't even notice I'm using the pad to aim. I'm amazed more hasn't been made out of how accurate the gyro controls are on this game. I actually think the size and weight of the pad helps it to feel better than with say a DS3.

I'm 25. For 23 years I've played games with all sorts of control options under the sun. I've used M+KB, joystick, racing wheels, controllers and gyros. I will say it out loud for everyone now, gyros are as precise for me as M+KB. Anyone that is saying it isn't is just being a stubborn mule that doesn't want to do what game players should be able to do since the Atari, adapt.

I think it says something about the ease of use and benefit of the gyro aiming - in addition to the twin-stick controls - that I've found myself playing other games and trying to move the GamePad to tweak the camera. It's become second-nature, and it feels odd not having the option in other titles.
