Hey SteamGAF, I was wondering: any of you uses the invert y axis setting in first person shooters?

If I'm using a controller, I always Invert-Y-Axis. I always think of controlling the screen like a flightstick when I use an analogue stick on a gamepad. I don't really like FPS on a controller anyway, but invert y makes it somewhat tolerable.

Man, I am really surprised that so many play y-inverted in non-flight games. Like you said, I always see the setting but I thought it has to be a very small minority and just being easy to add for devs they put it in but I am slowly rethinking my opinions.
I remember when I first tried a modern gamepad - one with dualsticks. Some little kids of relatives brought a 360 to play MW splitscreen. I watched them a bit play and they wanted me to play with them. Boy did I suck with dualsticks. It was so hard to get to gripes with looking and moving and all the shoulder buttons and face buttons. Boy, I felt like a gramps when they laughed at me spasming out in the game, haha. Now it feels really good to play with a controller.

I mean it is definitely a minority, just not a completely obscure one. One of the best things Microsoft did on the 360 was letting you select a global option to invert y-axis in all games. Really wish Sony would steal that.

But yeah, my first time playing Halo (which I think was my first dual stick FPS, though some N64 games used the C-buttons for a similar control scheme) I spent a lot of time looking at the floor and the sky (and not just because the skyboxes were pretty). The controls definitely didn't click right away. Switching to the inverted control scheme did a lot for allowing me to actually feel like my character was moving and looking in the directions I wanted him to.

Some Rockstar games. Call of Duty. Halo. Latter two still have them to this day, so it's not defunct. I used it for Bioshock Infinite on PC, as well.

It's not really the standard at all, but it's more comfortable if you're left handed or you just kind of grew into that set. Some people go as far as to have their controllers rewired because some games don't offer the option.

I think Veggie meant where did that scheme come from originally that it earned the term "legacy".

For a lot of people, the legacy controls are the ones they got used to playing Goldeneye, but it goes back a bit further than that. In old school shooters like Doom and Wolfenstein, Up and Down moved you Forward and Back and Left and Right rotated your character. Strafing existed, but it wasn't bound to the directional buttons, and a lot of casual players never used it. Look up and down was not a thing in these games. Control schemes weren't exactly standardized in those days, but the concept of moving and rotating with the same hand became familiar to people who played shooters, and was translated to console controls as well.

With the invention of mouse-look, this control scheme became largely obsolete on PC. Free look with a mouse just made sense, as did mapping largely digital movement to digital keys (and eventually WASD became standard for movement). But it took a while for some people to get used to having to use two hands to move naturally when they used to be able to do it with only one. It also took a while for console games to successfully emulate mouse-look on controllers (and to do so in a way that caught on).

TL;DR, legacy controls refers to a control scheme that predates mouse-look. But unlike for mouse and keyboard where legacy controls would be completely illogical nowadays, they are perfectly usable on a dual analog setup, assuming you are used to them. I think the split between movement on one stick and aiming/looking on the other stick makes a lot more sense though.

I just looked at the kickstarter. It's sitting at 485,000 of a requested 800,000 with 3 days to go. The loss of 4000 is...less than 1%. That's not much of an outcry. And while it MIGHT get the last 300K it needs in three days, it's gonna be a struggle.

Losing money at the end of your kickstarter is usually a bad look. Most kickstarters make a significant amount of their money on the first and last few days; that they are not only not making money but actually losing money goes to show how well everything related to Red Ash has looked. that is, not so good.

I guess it wouldn't be a very interesting game, but it would be nice to have the option to just keep doing what you're doing, working for your masters, and maybe finding and reporting possible rebels.

Also, I'm pretty sure they mean "dystopian." Because a Utopian society would be perfect, and why would you want to disrupt everyone's perfect lives?

Apparently can't hold a constant framerate, which would be a huge problem in a game like that.

Ive been playing games which cant hold a constant framerate on consoles for years, I can handle it.

Only game which has kepy me from playing it because of the framerate is Dragons Dogma. I own Arisen on both PS3 and X360 and still have not played more than 10 min of each of them.

Anyone mentioned that FF Type-0 HD is on GMG now and you can use the 20% off code to get the price down even further than Steam price?

I searched before posting this but if I missed it being said somewhere else I apologize...

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is on GMG and it's $21.60 after using their 20% off voucher (GMGSAV-E20GMG-SAVE20)...obviously the DOTA 2 incentives aren't there

edit: lol...already beaten

Groupees coins are sneaky. Went to buy a $2 bundle with my $3 groupees coins; because it was a "$3 coin", I don't get change, so it cost me the whole coin to get the $2 bundle. And of course, Groupees almost never does $3 bundles, they do $1-2 bundles, and then they do $4+ bundles. So you're either going to lose some value on the coin, or you're going to have to pay them the balance. Sneaky sneaky.
