Game Informer September cover - Destiny: The Taken King [Up: All Details]

Everyone loved the sword gameplay in the two story missions/raid that had it, so that makes sense.

So TTK is literally how the game should have launched day one. Thanks Bungie. The year one stuff better be decent in exchange for us beta testing your game for a year.

If the sword was a heavy weapon I would never equip anything else!

Probably not true, because you would totally die a lot more, but it would be fun!

Think I'm gonna jump back in...ready for some co-op leveling again. Just hope I wont miss out on too much by not doing raids all the time.

This is worse than when they do those E3 issues with a dozen different games.

And LOL @ the cube thing being a character now. What's that even mean, relative to what came before? North will be better at the voice, but probably not much past that.

Is this the first time GI gave an expansion pack the front cover title?

The pickings have it be slim for them to resort to this. Either publishers are becoming stingier with press coverage or the number of AAA games have really dropped.

Or maybe Destiny, and this Expansion Pack are big and deserve its own cover.

Re posting this info I found, might have spoilers so covering them all

Some information from the Digital Edition of Game Informer for Taken King.

Opening Cinematic is narrated by our new Ghost (Nolan North)
Cinematic shows the Awoken waging war against Oryx with both Prince Uldren and the Queen involved in the fight.
Taken enemies wield brand new effects such as Taken Captains wearing solar shields and throwing out orbs of darkness that blind, Knights fling aoe scorch, Centurions shoot tracking rounds, Wizards summon thralls, Psions split into two, Vandals deploy defender like shields that allow them to shoot out and heal, Phalanxes shoot projectiles from the shield, and thralls teleport on the battlefield.
New world objects exist that can be scanned by your Ghost and give useful information and lore, can even start a dialogue between your ghost and the Vanguard, things like statues, weird worms, etc.
All items will offer perk customization including weapons, armor, class items, and even your ghost!
Crucible has improved matchmaking and a new mercy rule that will end a match early when misbalanced.
New system in place that allows you to sacrifice pieces of gear to empower others from the same slot, may be some kind of transmog system (very few details)
New quest lines, Eris Morn gives a quest that leads to the rediscovery of a forgotten weapon type.
New class quest lines, including quests for the new subclasses and added quest lines for the older sub classes that introduce you to them and give some back story.
Gunsmith has his own reputation meter now, lets you test prototype weapons in the field, with higher rep you can order a weapon once a week that will be delivered on Wednesday with a random set of perks.
Crucible and Vanguard Marks have been consolidated into "Legendary Marks".
Class armor materials have been removed, consolidated into one source that is shared between all three classes.
Can now pledge allegiance to a crucible faction, one at a time only. No longer requires wearing a class item. Can also turn in Motes, Weapon Parts, Armor Mats, synths, etc to gain reputation.
New computer console near the outfitter that allows you to pick a shader you want, and also displays all the shaders you have yet to acquire and how to get them, same system is in place for emblems.
Vault space is still an issue, Luke Smith is quoted saying "We are exploring options for getting stuff out of players inventories via these kiosks that we've played around the tower, but we're still working towards a solution that we're excited about."
At least a dozen new exotic weapons, and at least a half dozen armor exotics per class.
New Auto Rifle exotic shoots blasts of lightning, sniper rifle that blinds nearby enemies on a precision hit, or the new pulse rifle called "No Time To Explain" that fits the role of a high level strangers rifle that refuels bullets directly to the magazine on precision hits.
New exotic called Sleeper Simulant, Fusion rifle that sits in the heavy slot and acts as a rail gun, over penetrates and bounces off walls, upgrades improve the bounce count.
Many exotics are tied to quests, one example requires that you explore the dreadnaught and find hidden pieces throughout.
Vanguard Mentor gives you your new subclass quest
New Crucible Modes are Rift, Mayhem, and Zone Control which is just control with kills not counting towards the score.
New dedicated quest line that introduces players to the Crucible and the respective NPCs like Shaxx.
Simpler bounties have been made, with more difficult bounties being available and even fireteam based bounties for pvp. Trials now has bounties associated with it as well as new weekly bounties for the crucible which upon completion give access to a sixth weekly and challenging bounty that can reward a legendary or exotic.
First act of the story is 8 "Lengthy" story missions, with the second act includes additional story missions, strikes, exploration, triggered public events, weapon quests that all lead to the introduction of the new raid called "King's Fall".
Quests in act 2 revolve around the Taken War, includes quests line Unsealed Paradox which returns you to the Vault of Glass and reveals the fate of Praedyth.
Presence of "raid-light" mechanics in strikes, Bungie is hesitant to make strikes too complicated due to griefing.

Shader computer terminal where you can see what shaders you have and retrieve them as well as ones you don't have?

MY HEART!!!!!!

I must know - have the missions etc become a lot more varied since the base game launched? That's what turned me off in the end. I got to level 22 and then got bored with the repetitive missions. Hoping that the 2 expansions (Haven't played those yet) + the taken king will offer a better variety in terms of things to do.

If so then I'm seriously considering jumping back in.

Those updates sound awesome. I honestly wasn't expecting most of that until Destiny 2.

Yeah I'm beginning to wonder how far off Destiny 2 is. I can't help but wonder if its been delayed quite a bit. I was expecting a new Destiny every 2 years but now I'm wondering if it will be 3 or more with maybe instead of Destiny 2 next year another large scale expansion like TTK

I imagine they'll have to go out of there way to show that the missions in TTK aren't "walk up to a terminal, wait for Nolanbot to open door while 10 waves of shield enemies rush at you" ad nauseum.

Otherwise, why would anyone play this game for the campaign/co-op?

Decisions I need to make now are:

- Buy the LE PS console?
- Which of my 3 level 34s do I take to 40 and start raiding with first? I'm leaning towards Titan.

Error

Jealous of the Glory that is Johnny Depp
Sounds good, will probably buy the expansion and get back into the game. hated the whole post-level 20 grind to level 34.

This thing looks pretty hot. I wish we had more than one new area, but at least they're addressing the shaky fundamentals. A solid base is more important than piling shit on top of fucky systems and mechanics. From here on out, however, I expect more content from future expansions. (unless the Dreadnought is REALLY fucking big)

Good lord. A lot of these changes are focused in providing clarity around the existing game systems, or improving them to be more reliable. I found a lot of the systems to be inscrutable in vanilla Destiny, so this is very good so see.

As great as all of this is, the more I see from Destiny in each of its updates, the more I feel like this whole thing has been an AAA early access program at our expense to prepare for Destiny's real release.

Cross posting this from the OT:

Some random stuff:
Hakke Pulse Rifles shoot four bursts instead of 3.

New Marks. Replacing Vanguard/Crucible marks.

On Armor class items:
Class Specific armor upgrade items are being replaced with a singular Armor Material. Thank freaking god.

On Factions:
You have to pledge allegiance to a faction to gain reputation. You no longer have to wear their class items for rep. You can if you want but it's for those who don't like their looks. You can only pledge yourself to one at a time.

On new Exotics:
- auto rifle that shoots blast of chain lightning
- a sniper that blinds nearby enemies on precision hit
- Pulse Rifle called No Time To Explain
-exotics come with an intrinsic perk upon acquisition
- many are tied to involved quest lines
- one such quest line has you explore the Dreadnaught and looking for hidden pieces sorta like Dead Ghost Hunting.
-Sleeper Simulant, a fusion rifle that takes up heavy slot. Quest Line exotic.

More on Sleeper Simulant:
The new exotic shown in the issue is a fusion rifle that takes up your heavy slot. It's like a rail cannon. It's dedicated to a quest line. It's called Sleeper Simulant.

On Subclasses and their quest lines (all spoilers):
Putting the info behind spoilers for those on a blackout
-Sunbreakers Titans are considered a rogue mercenary clan
-you head to Venus for the first step in tracking their whereabouts
-second mission in Mercury. No spoilers in the issue on this.
-one mission includes you fighting a large number of Vex with your super regenerating in seconds. Basically gives you a chance to test out your new abilities.
-for Hunters, it involves tracking down a lone wolf hunter who has gone missing
-warlocks involve a shamanistic ritual in which Ikora indoctrinates you into the power of the storm

On Story and Endgame (all spoilers):
Again, I'm putting this behind spoilers:
- story missions are spread across a core campaign, subclass focused events, exotic quests, and additional tasks that open up later
- eight lengthy story missions frame the opening arc of the narrative, tracking your Guardian's infiltration of the Dreadnaught and assault against Oryx
-one sequence include a vertigo inducing platforming sequence in the Cosmodrome
-another moment is you fleeing a horde of Taken in underground passages of the moon
-you'll come across a marauding group of cabal and their crashed ship as you infiltrate the Dreadnaught
-raid is called King's Fall
-new post story missions
- many around an event called the Taken War.
-difficulty is ramped up for these
-one such mission takes you into the Vault
-you'll learn more about Praedyth.

On New Strikes (spoilers inbound):
-new strikes have "raid-light" (their word not mine) mechanics to keep things mentally engaging
- more enemies to match the increased firepower of high level guardians
-strike encounters alter enemy configurations on subsequent playthroughs between two or three potential fights
-can even face different enemy species
-Bungie has recorded multiple version of narrations

Spoilers ahead:
-new strike called Fallen Saber
-takes you back to Earth in response to a distress call from Rasputin
-takes you deep into the Seraph Vault
-you've seen the strike boss already, it's the big ass shank in the vidoc
- The Shield Brother Strike takes you to the Dreadnaught
-two cabal leaders aim to blow the Dreadnaught up with you on board (I say let them while we run out)
-one has a devastating melee attack
-the other uses a mortar cannon strapped to back
- you fight both at the same time
-The Sunless Cell is a Hive Strike
-you hunt down the Hive Darkblade named Alak-Hul
- he was imprisoned in a dark chamber for rebelling against Oryx
-Echo Chamber is the Playstation exclusive strike
-you head to Venus and hunt down the Restoractive Mind
-it seeks to revive the Nexus Mind we destroyed in the Nexus strike
-completely shielded.
-Only able to harm it after using a specific item to take down its shield
-regularly need to cover in order to dodge a devastating gaze attack

Maaaan... bungie is definitely nailing it with these changes. I really was trying to not get sucked back into this game but they are making it very very difficult to have a normal life.

Yes. This is exactly what strikes needed. They're designing content that will be replayed often, to be more replayable.

Also why does the cover look like a fantasy game?

I mean, it looks very good, but I think I missed something. I thought this was generally more like sci-fi with some fantasy elements instead of the other way aesthetically.

Destiny is a fantasy MMO :p
