Media Create Sales: Week 31, 2015 (Jul 27 - Aug 02)

vinnygambini

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
I wonder what content DLC strategy Nintendo has reserved for Q3-Q4 judging from the following statement: We also aim to maintain the performance of already-released titles with strong sales potential by introducing additional download content.

Q1:

Mario Kart 8
Super Smash Bros

Q2:

Fire Emblem Fates
Super Smash Bros
Splatoon

Q3-Q4: ?

Nintendo confirmed a month ago that HHD will have an initial shipment of 500K, so those numbers are totally in line with that.

In regards to SE, This fiscal year is all about Eidos & SE mobile bringing in the dough; next year is all about SE Japan.

March 2016 - Dragon Quest Heroes 2

July-August 2016 - Dragon Quest XI*

October 2016 - Dragon Quest Joker 3*

November-December 2016 - Kingdom Hearts 3

March 2017 - Final Fantasy XV

That's what I think will happen. I don't think FFXV development has progressed enough to release in 2016.

Feel free to add, or modify the dates to your liking.

*Usually mainline Dragon Quest release in the summer but I could also see it releasing in October, switching with Joker 3.

If I'm not mistaken, Media Create counts it as two, and Nintendo refers to Media Create for #'s, so most likely they will count it as two as well?
March 2016 - Dragon Quest Heroes 2

July-August 2016 - Dragon Quest XI*

October 2016 - Dragon Quest Joker 3*

November-December 2016 - Kingdom Hearts 3

March 2017 - Final Fantasy XVI

February 2018 - Final Fantasy XVI-2

December 2019 - Final Fantasy XV in Japan only.

More Smash Bros, Fire Emblem Fates DLC season 2, more Splatoon. Maybe Mario Maker will get some too in spite of them claiming otherwise.

All IPs were new ips at some point, don't really understand what you mean.

Dragon Quest was a new IP over 20 years ago, but you don't talk about it as if it is a new IP now.

With all the other numbers no one has really mentioned how Yokai went up/held at ~110k.

Sheesh. Unless it was expected.

Half a million for the AC game? Seriously?

?

AC is almost the biggest game franchise in Japan. What did you expect it to sell?

Edit:

I will correct myself it is tied with the biggest franchise in Japan. MH:pokemon:Animal Crossing

Yeah, I've seen the list posted in a previous thread. I think Dragon's Dogma was #1.
Well, on home consoles the biggest new IP last gen was the Wii series as its called now, with Wii Sports being the best selling one of the series (3.7m Wii Sports wasn't bundled in Japan mind you).

If you count Wii Sports Resort and Wii Party as sequels or whatever then then its Dragon's Dogma, and then Just Dance.

I guess something like this is what you want (for last obviously)

  1. [WII] Wii Sports: 3.724.264
  2. [WII] Wii Sports Resort: 3.160.259
  3. [WII] Wii Fit Plus: 2.417.762
  4. [WII] Wii Party: 2.382.177
  5. [PS3]Dragon's Dogma: 679.877
  6. [WII] Just Dance Wii: 653.888
  7. [WII] Wii Music: 424.192

Tell me if I'm no help :S

Most of us didn't expect it to sell 500k at launch.

Hm...

Here's what people expected from Animal Crossing after 32 days.

All August 2015 predictions:
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,400,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,400,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,450,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,385,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,100,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,000,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,246,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,234,567
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,197,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,485,532
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,150,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,350,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,268,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,200,000
[3DS] Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer (32 days) - 1,200,000

I don't know what you're talking about when you say people weren't expecting something like 500k. If anything they expected more, much more. Lots of backpedaling here.

YSO was also expecting a 650k opening.

YSO was also expecting a 650k opening.

Hum? They usually put up a ceiling on predictions, not an actual all-out-number.

YSO predictions

Week 31, 2015 (Jul 27 - Aug 2)

[3DS] Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer < 650k
[3DS] Yo-kai Watch Busters < 120k
[PSV] IA/VT: Colorful < 30k
[WIU] Splatoon < 30k

Their opening predictions were off in both cases, their continuing sales predictions were accurate. That said, I don't know how it'd be 650k+ when Nintendo was supposedly shipping ~500k. How does retail move more than exists?

It's pretty clear YSO predictions are supposed to be close to the ceiling.

I don't know you tell me.

Look I'm not saying HHD sold poorly. I'm saying GAF clearly had expectations for the game.

I'm not arguing with you, lol, I am just adding some notes. That said, the shipment is larger than we had thought it would be initially which I had missed. Seems its somewhere around ~650k.

It'll be interesting to see where digital is for HHD and if it puts it near YSOs weekly predictions since they don't take "lost to digital" sales into account.

Most people were surprised at the YSO prediction. And the prediction league was posted after YSO too.

Before that, nobody (?) was expecting it to debut with 500k.

Can someone post that list of best selling new IPs? Wondering how Splatoon compares (so far)
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the title goes to Pokemon Red/Green/Blue
Should I create a new thread?

Famitsu Top 100 First Half of 2015 {2014.12.29 - 2015.06.28}
78. [WIU] Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker <ADV> (Nintendo) {2014.11.13} (¥3.996) - 42.170 / 155.558
The legs.

But can Splatoon outsell DQXI PS4?

If Nintendo keeps supporting it, and WoM remains extremely positive and strong (and the game remains fresh)... its certainly possible.

But we have to remember that SE amputated DQHs legs with the DQH2 announcement, too, which is possibly skewing our views.

Yes. I'd say that's almost a sure thing.

I'm not so sure about that at all. I mean, how much are we expecting Splatoon to eventually sell? I would say DQXI on 3DS + PS4 has a good comparison in Smash 3DS + WiiU. Even with the crippling advantage of an early release for 3DS, the WiiU version still sold over a million copies in Japan. Even with a PS3 version, DQH managed over 300k on the PS4.

If Splatoon can sell over a million, it might be a close fight with DQXI PS4 if the console market doesn't pick up at all in the next year, but it's certainly not anything close to a sure thing.

Here's something to posit in the Smash comparison (even though I think I was the one who initially brought up the comparison, lol), Smash has a very competitive segment which, while minor, drives sales and interest in the console version as well as the added benefit of 4-8vs. play without needing a billion 3DSs and that can be in one household. The console version has a lot of quirks to it that make it a good "double dip" for many Smash players or even "only dip" for some over ever touching the 3DS version (plus the Mewtwo and Soundtrack incentives). Also graphical upgrade.

DQXI in as of so far is graphics vs. handheld + two-versions-of-the-game-nostalgia.

Outside of the top 30 Xenoblade X sold 4.031, that's 4k in a 4 weeks.

Not as bad as Tales of Zestiria that sold 5.088 outside of top 30, that's 5k in 16 weeks.

Tales still sold over 3 times as much as Xenoblade but jeesh.

The game that has sold the most outside of top 30 is Mario Kart 7 (27k) followed by GTAV on PS4 (27k rounding them up GTAV is just s few hundred units away from Mario Kart) and God Eater 2: Rage Burst on Vita (24k).

Wii U version did not sell over a million copies in Japan.

Oh fuck I was looking at NSMB U. I have brain damage, confirmed.

Haha, I was so confused at first since Splatoon will definitely outstrip Smash on Wii U over the next year.

I think smash is around 650-700k?

With digital its just barely over 700k

Okay that is what I thought. Splatoon will definitely pass Smash with the holiday season.

I don't see how that makes the game more attractive for double dippers than DQXI which looks like two entirely different games have been developed. Plus Dragon Quest is a much stronger franchise with a more loyal audience as evidenced by how well the spinoffs and remakes sell.

I'm not arguing that DQXI won't have plenty of double dippers, however I'd argue that most people that will double dip will just get an used copy, as its pretty much standard with RPGs a few weeks after release there's going to be more used copies than brand new ones out there, which isn't the case with a game like Smash.

Smash is two completely different games as well, it just has a lot going for it that is simply not available in the 3DS version as it isn't a story-based game and all they share is the roster and combat. As I said in my post, it has competitive elements or players that prefer console/console controls as well as the simple advantage for natural local play and the size to which it can be taken.

These aren't features in DQXI. We may see varied combat or an expanded upon combat from DQXI polygonal mode 3DS, but in as of so far we don't have any indications. They could end up playing effectively identically or close to it, at which point the only thing left is graphics.

People will no doubt double-dip for DQXI... but it being an RPG, I'd question how many will double-dip new vs. used as its not a game with long-lasting online components like Smash.
