EXCLUSIVE: A killer role that Leonardo DiCaprio has wanted to play for a long time is finally coming to the forefront after Paramount just closed a splashy deal to acquire the Erik Larson book The Devil In The White City: Murder, Magic And Madness At The Fair That Changed America. There was a big auction that had five studios chasing and three bidding aggressively–Universal and Fox were the others–before Paramount captured a package that has DiCaprio starring and re-teaming with his The Wolf Of Wall Street director Martin Scorsese. Billy Ray will write the script. Appian Way’s DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson are producing with Stacey Sher, and Scorsese. This is a big one for recently minted Paramount Film Group president Marc Evans; it’s expected to be the next collaboration for DiCaprio and Scorsese, who’ve made five films together.

DiCaprio will play one of the most prolific serial killers in Chicago history, the 19th Century equivalent of Hannibal Lecter. He has wanted this for a long time, but the project’s second wind occurred after Warner Bros let the rights lapse a month ago on the 2003 non-fiction book (Graham Moore was among the writers who did drafts) and came out of conversations with Par’s Brad Grey and Scorsese and Yorn about the studio being at the center of the next DiCaprio-Scorsese teaming, after the studio released The Wolf Of Wall Street and it got five Oscar nominations. Yorn, DiCaprio and Scorsese went out with a new take on the material from Ray that got everybody excited all over again. The trick with this property has been interlacing the two main characters, the producer/architect of the World’s Fair, and the man who works for him and turned out to be a mass murderer. Ray cracked that, and the town flipped for it.

DiCaprio will play Dr. HH Holmes, a cunning serial killer believed to have murdered anywhere from 27 to 200 people at a time when the city of Chicago was enthralled with hosting the World’s Fair of 1893. Holmes constructed The World’s Fair Hotel, an inn more lethal than the Bates Motel, especially for young single women. The sociopath used charm and guile to lure guests into what became known as a “murder castle,” a haunt that had a gas chamber, crematorium and a dissecting table where Holmes would murder his victims and strip their skeletons to sell for medical and scientific study.

Did not remember Scorsese being interested in this! It's amazing to see all the great roles Leo is getting
still won't get an Oscar, I bet

Fuck yes. The book is the perfect mixture of history, architecture, and creepiness. Definitely recommend it to anyone interested in this film.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
Oh shit, this is going to be a Scorsese movie? Fucking awesome. I read the book a few years back and really enjoyed it. I think it's a good role for DiCaprio. I wonder how they'll handle the story, though, as the book is almost two separate stories that somewhat converge at the end - the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, and H. H. Holmes setting up his hotel of horrors in Chicago. I imagine it'll focus heavily on the latter.

Scorsese is going to be at least 75 by the time this starts shooting.

Jean-Luc Godard is 84 and still going, well I would like to say strong but I have a hate-love-hate relationship with his work. So as long as Scorsese has his health he should be doing what he (so clearly) loves.

sounds cool but eh i'd have liked to see scorsese work with fassbender on this role tbh.

i appreciate that silence has his most refreshing cast in years though. looking forward to that one as well.

I am completely excited! This is one of my favorite pieces of literature of all time since I read it one year ago. I love how history comes alive in both the creation of the World Fair, and the creation of a serial killer.

I may be biased as a Chicagoan, but I will definitely keep my eye on this.

yup same, concept and cast look good, although I'm a bit wary of Scorsese these days

These two love working with one another and produce great movies.

I hope DiCaprio gets that Oscar one day, because he's clearly awesome at acting.

Wanna see one more scorsese and deniro movie before I die. Love the Leo films but just want to see them work together once more.

Spoilers galore in that OT for those who haven't read the book yet. Great book and this is a great team to bring it to the big screen

He'll get one for the Inarritu western he's in with Hardy (the revenant), coming out on Christmas

It does feel like Leo's year! Being a movies fan is great this year.

Sounds good. Disappointed it delays the Irishman though. All those actors aren't getting any younger
