I don't get why you need to ask - you already have an idea of what the general masses thinks. There's always a range of opinion, and you've done your homework, what else is left besides watching yourself to form your own view?

What does asking here achieve outside of having the wider consensus decide whether you watch it or not?

This thread is going to be disproportionally filled with Marvel fans telling you how great the movie is. Don't expect objective responses, OP.

On the other hand it could attract the marvel haters as well. So yeah, don't expect objective responses.

But anyways OP, in my experience the RT rating for comic book based movies is usually a good indicator as to how good it is. I trust it.

No, it has the the good concept of a fun scifi adventure of misfits, but it doesn't have the spark to execute it properly. It tries too hard, it doesn't feel "genuine" (that's very vague I know), the witty lines weren't witty but instead it reminded that there was a writer behind them trying to ape a certain style.

It's average. Last fight was anime as balls.

The worldbuilding is nice, but I didn't find the main plot or the characters engaging or compelling. There were some fight scenes, I guess.

What were the arguments your friends who disliked it made?

It was entertaining enough. Not on Winter Soldier's level but more fun than most of the Marvel movies I've seen recently.

Thanks for the replies!

I forgot to mention that those people who didn't like it because they found it way too much juvenile and some also mention that Zoe Saldana did a not so great job portraying Gamora (I read the comic so I know the character!).
Also the ending.

Those who like it was because they found it to be easy and fun without becoming "irritating" as other superhero movies.

I know what you mean, but I will try to read between the lines :)

It's a pretty fun movie. Not the greatest movie, but it's highly entertaining. The ending is terrible though.

The big bad would've easily won, but he gets distracted by dancing and then the heroes use a Care Bear stare/the power of friendship to kill him.

Overrated as all hell I felt. The comedy was try-hard and mostly sucked, especially Drax whom everyone seemed to love. The pace is too hurried and the plot too nonsensical. Ronan was terrible and overacted, Nova Corps was pathetic and seemed like a bunch of helpless little puppies, and the ending was too stupid to believe.

So you've read the comics enough to know how Gamora should be characterised but still need us to validate your choice to sit on a couch and watch the movie? Lol...

It's good for the following reasons:

- Well done big budget film. Looks very nice. Good production quality.
- Amazing soundtrack
- Very funny but also lots of action. An enjoyable mix
- You (at least most people) don't know the characters. There aren't any pre-conceived notions of how they should look/act/etc. In other words, it's a fresh story and cast of characters to take in.
- Unconventional team of underdogs are always a fun time.

^^^..... DO IT ..... JUST DOW IT.gift

Oh yeah, this is definitely true. Except for the opening scene and one other scene early on in the film, it's basically a kids/family movie, more so than other Marvel-property.

It's a middle-of-the-road film on par with your average Marvel matinee that you'll forget the plot details to a week after you've seen it.

Whoops. I mean it's a film shifting the cinematic landscape of Hollywood.

This is my opinion as well, although framed not as negatively I guess. I definitely enjoyed the movie, but I personally don't consider it to be "very good".

Hi,
I still haven't got the chance to see this movie, and from what I've read and seen it may easily fit my taste (especially for the setting).

I have some friends who *loved* it and others that didn't really like it.

Now, all those people who didn't like it had pretty convincing reasons/opinions, but a quick look at imdb and rotten tomatoes makes me scratch my head... Looks like the majority of the public loved this.

I want to try here asking fellow gaffers a genuine opinion about this movie, but most important the main reason(s) why it is so good.

Thanks for the reply.

Edit : Since my movies backlog is huge i'm trying to catch up by watching a new movie every 2 days, however I didn't really find so great the latest superhero movies I watched (Ironman 3 and Avengers 2) so I don't want to "waste" my tomorrow movie day.

you have friends that hate it you might want to find new friends jk I have yet to meet someone who hates this film

It's a pretty well balanced film I think in that it is pretty dumb and brash like you expect from a comic book movie but it also avoids being crass with a well directed sensibility.

If you're going to watch it because of the Gaffers proclaiming that it's amazing you're going to be disappointed. It's not. It's a fun timewaster, but nothing more than that. Unless you're a diehard fan you're going to forget most of what happened the day after. I'd say it's on par with your average Pirates of the Carribean movie, perhaps with a slightly nerdier sense of humour. There's not much to the characters, the plot is nothing more than an excuse to move from setpiece to setpiece, the comedy was amusing at times, but never really laugh-out-loud funny. CGI looked pretty though. Did feel like it would be fun for people really into the MCU and the comics, but as someone who doesn't really care for any of that I can safely say that it wasn't really for me.

If you've got a big backlog you want to work through, be assured that there are a lot of movies out there to watch that are a lot better. Maybe if you're in the mood for some dumb fun, but there are movies like this in the cinema every summer.

It's a fairly brainless movie, so if you hope for something that's adult in any way, forget about it.

I actually did find it irritating at times (and yes, the ending is hard to swallow), because while I understand this is meant to appeal to the broad public, I think they could have found a better compromise and given it a bit more depth (it could have been done).

I do find people happy, clean and smiling after your city has been half-destroyed quite irritating.

You should mostly watch it to enjoy some really wicked sci-fi scenes and settings, and that's what I think makes it worth your time in spite of everything else. The big budget shows.
CGI characters are more engaging than real ones at time, although prolly Gamora was the least engaging.

It's fun, not good, just fun.

MCU ratings
Good- Iron Man, Winter Soldier
Fun- Avengers, GotG
Mediocre- All of the ones not named
Bad- Thor 2, Incredible Hulk

Have not scene AoU or Ant-Man yet

I didn't think anything about this movie was particularly good. It's just another Marvel movie you can watch.

You almost said the same thing of a friend of mine and I care about his opinion, so this is pretty interesting.

I'm not saying I will not watch this movie, but is always interesting reading all these opinions because I always learn something new!

It was a glory

HOLY SHIT, it was

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
It's funny, it's more of a sci-fi action comedy than a super hero movie. It reminds me of good sci-fi from the 80's, and maybe early 90's.

This is actually extremely on point. Ant-Man earned a spot in the "fun" category, too. And I hold Iron Man 3 in pretty high regard.

So rather than just going into the film and judging it on its own merits, you're going to collect a bunch of opinions that will color your expectations and probably your final opinion?

It's easier to just watch the damn thing. It isn't long.
