The Spoony Experiment

I've never played a game of that in my life, but I can still listen to Spoony go on about alignment languages.

The guy is just entertaining.

Had no idea what this thread was, but I started watching the FFVIII review. This guy is funny? Seems like a huge homophobe. I can't watch any more of this.

that FFVIII review came out like nine years ago. He's grown up (well, somewhat), and he doesn't really do stupid gay jokes anymore.

Yeah, the FFVIII review wasn't exactly the pinnacle of this carrier, especially not the beginning. He apologized later for it, but he really should've take it down or something. Don't worry, he grows up with time.

He made the FFVIII videos several years back and apologized for that series of homophobic comments in a later video (one of the FFX videos I think). It's cringe inducing to watch it now, but he has grown out of that mindset.

It's hilarious precisely because of how immature it is. His later FF reviews are shallow and full of nitpicking because it's really just him trying to pander to the fanbase rather having anything emotional or meaningful to say about the games.

Yeah, he actually expressively apologized for that in a later Final Fantasy-video and questioned "what the hell he was thinking" or something along those lines. I'd link to it but I don't really remember what video it was in exactly.

I'd advise you to watch his Final Fatasy XIII or Final Fantasy X-series. They are great stuff, and especially production-wise leagues ahead of FFVIII. That was basically his first big video series and it really shows today.

The best work he has ever done though, imo, is his Ultima-series, which leads to one of the most amazing monologues any online reviewer, internet celebrity or however you want to call them, has ever giving about anything in his Ultima 9 review. Also, it ended with him interviewing Richard Gariott, who was actually a fan of his Ultima-videos, which is pretty cool.

The OP is 7 years old now, so you really shouldn't pay much attention to what's linked there ;)

I'd say the pinnacle is his Ultima series (especially Ultima 8), but SWAT 4 is close.

"What's a paladin?" is one of my all-time favorite Spoony moments.

Next to "okay, here's what we know so far: helicopters exist."

I also haven't really followed his stuff in general in the last few years and just found about about counter monkey - this sounds like such an interesting series, since I used to be really fascinated with AD&D as a kid but never had anyone to play with.

If you want the pinnacle, watch the SWAT 4 playthrough.
Didn't like that. I think Spoony isn't good with lets plays.

I didn't laugh. I am rather be amused that forcefully not pandered. Spoony evolved and got better.

Ultima was the best overall. Watch all of it chronologically, it's hillarious and not just shitting. You can feel how much Spoony loved the games.

That's always when people like him are at their best - when there's a real story behind the ranting.

This is also why the first couple of AVGN videos will always be the best to me, because he made the videos simply because he wanted to get this off his chest. Having to come up with complaints about a game you don't really care about and don't have a history with is always going to be much less effective.

That said, and I know this isn't an AVGN thread but it's worth noting: The newest AVGN episode was seriously great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IV8hCvsXy0 One of the very best episodes he has ever done imo. He notably went far beyond the usual "Let's state the obvious and say FUCK 3 times". It was a real change of pace for him.

I really do hope Spoony manages to sort out whatever it is keeping him away from his work. He has made some of my favorite content in the "online reviewer genre" and watching his downfall a few years ago hurt. He seemed to be doing a lot better, but then his release schedule just went downhill more and more, without much of an explanation as far as I know.

Dont misunderstand: Those Final Fantasy videos are a LOT of work. Like, weeks of work, especially considering he records almost all of the footage himself and has to shift through dozens of hours of said footage. It's far more work than you'd imagine from the outside. But it's, without a doubt, possible to release a video of that quality at least once a month, without you having to go all out and breaking down from exhaustion. I'm only saying that because my job is actually pretty similiar and I think I have a good idea of what he does, how he does it and how long stuff like that usually takes. Of course I never experienced the health problems he did and it's probably why his schedule is all over the place. It's impossible for any of us to put ourself in his shoes when we never experienced the problems he was confronted with every single day...it's just such a bummer because Noah has soooo much potential and nails it everytime he manages to release something big :/

I'm not trying to rip on the guy but I watched a little bit of his stream archives on YT. After doing that, it's really hard to believe that this is the same guy who did that brilliant riff on Phantasmagoria 2. I've seen quite a few informative/entertaining LP's that are comedic but not retarded screamer-cam fests. And honestly the Phantasmagoria 2 riff is the funniest one of them all, though not quite as informative as the famous Trespasser LP done by that other guy whose name escapes me. Only thing I dislike about the Phantasmagoria 2 riff are the homophobic jokes he uses. Otherwise it's perfect.

But yeah, that magic is long gone.

He does far better on record + edited stuff, easily surpassing AVGN / Nostalgia / AJ on those. But those take him far more work.

I can't believe you guys are talking about the pinnacle of this guy's career and talking about things other than FMV Hell or Phantasmagoria! I guess SWAT 4 is a fair answer though.

Yeah, this guy gets it. I totally agree.

It is the start of his XIII video, as he apologizes for bashing VIII so hard. I remember that because I used to consider II and VIII the worst of the series, then XIII came out and I realized how good they were in comparison to that piece of crap. When I saw his video, I could completely relate.

Yeah, the FMV Hell reviews, the SWAT series, Highlander 2 review, even the riff on Ripper (to an extent) all good stuff. It all went downhill for him when he started doing the vlogs and let his ego get to him.

I don't get the appeal of his modern content.

During the golden years Spoony was probably my favorite of the Channel Awesome bunch. His reviews was exemplary comedic gold. I've probably seen the Phantasmagoria review like five times. Now his stuff is nothing but trash. The average twitch streamer is more entertaining by comparison. It's sad.

The reason I find Ultima 8 the funniest review is that, after all the in-depth videos for previous games appreciating the individual pros and cons, he reaches a game that is hilariously inept in every way, shape, and form. Cue the explosive chest joke.

I think another thing about his Ultima retrospective that made it so good was how comprehensive it was. He covered every main game in detail, plus Akalabeth, plus the Ultima Underworld games. You got a good idea of the series' evolution from start to finish.

No, if you watched the credits the footage for FFX, FFX-2, FFXIII was recorded by his friend, Sean Fausz. Even the Ultima reviews he credits the footage from let's plays.

Agreed regarding his lets plays. His scripted reviews are peerless, but when he has to come off the top, the results can be anywhere from good to pretty poor.

His Ultima Retrospective is easily the best thing he's ever done.

Your knowledge of the land shall be great!

Exactly. His FF reviews are awesome. Phantasmagoria is hilarious to watch except for part 1. Seems like he freestyles part 1 and the rest were scripted which made it better. And his Ultima review is probably the best thing he's done besides his early ff8 review before he took a break. I don't know what happened to him but he's changed a lot since his old days and for the worse. Maybe because he got a girlfriend. Although I don't even know if they're still together. he's kinda fallen off the planet

Nah his huge downfall came after a tasteless twitter joke about rape which got him kicked off Channel Awesome, and then he broke up with his old girlfriend which sparked a compelte twitter meltdown alienating him from most of the reviewer community. He was on a pretty low point during those days, but now he got a new girlfriend and he is gradually getting more active. Unfortunately his live stuff isn't a fraction as entertaining as his old stuff. Would love to see more scripted point and click let's plays. There are a lot of bad FMV games out there just waiting for being reviewed.
