Metal Gear Solid V Has The Most Needless Sexualization Since Bayonetta (Spoilers)

Halfway through the game I can't tell what to make of Metal Gear V's depiction of women.

I have four options for help in the field right now.

1: A horse
2: A dog
3: A robot
4: A woman

Note the other choices are animals and machines.

The woman is clad only in a slight bikini top and torn tights. She positions herself suggestively (bent over) and often her cleavage takes center frame in shots (such as taking her in the helicopter). When left alone in my base she lays on her stomach and undoes the string of her top to reveal even more of her ample breasts. When in my helicopter during a mission-select sequence she will stretch with her butt facing Snake (and by extension, the spectator).

Her breasts have their own jiggle physics.

She does not speak. Her abilities include disappearing entirely. She takes commands without question.

Thus far, she's the only woman I've encountered in the game, beyond the name of Mother Base.

The men on Mother Base hate her and initially try to kill her but instead restrain her and keep her locked in a cell. Men who try to clothe her leave the encounter "breathing through tubes."

The reason she refuses to wear clothes is that she takes air and water through her skin.

Whereas in Bayonetta it can be argued that the voyeuristic posing and framing was Bayonetta taking charge of her sexuality, Quiet seems the victim of it. (Fitting, as she was experimented on). Often the camera feels like it is experimenting on her still.

I should note that I completely adore the character. She's absolutely badass, she's my favorite sidekick by a mile, and she's the most interesting character in the game by a landslide. But I feel a little odd that her only alternate attire are liquids applied to her near-naked body. I always feel like I'm leering at her, and the game encourages that.

Whereas watching Bayonetta I felt like the guy trying to avoid the aging stripper begging for private dances, looking at Quiet I feel like a creep hanging outside an ice cream parlor in a 1986 Chevrolet Astro.

People are going to come after you for the Bayonetta stuff.

Anyway Quiet is mostly a non-character but it's not a big deal.

I looked at the boobs once, and from that on she was just a normal character for me. A good one btw. The story around Quiet is great.

"The reason she refuses to wear clothes is that she takes air and water through her skin. "

So that's the reason? That's what Kojima meant by reason for being ashamed of criticizing her design?

I agree. I've loved my time with MGS but the way Quiet is utilized is actively revolting to me.

It completely takes me out of the game and the fact that ALL of her costume options are "naked" until you unlock some late game outfits is ridiculous.

And the flimsy explanation for her attire is no excuse for not having alternate costumes.

Does any sexuality in games bug you?

It's an absolutely awful costume that Quiet wears. Makes the fact that her story appears to be pretty decent even more ridiculous.

I'm legitimately impressed by how stupid it is.

They gave a valid reason why, story wise, however shes also the most badass character in the game imo.

Not seeing the problem.

You can get her to wear a uniform later on

There is actually a pretty good article on MGS in general and how Hideo was more or less forced to make another MGS because money.

So all of the outrageous stuff in the game is to directly be a snub to the players who wanted more Metal Gear.

Yeah its really shitty and completely unnecessary. Some of the worst I've seen in a while. I guess it feels worse than stuff found in other Japanese games because this Metal Gear seems to try to take itself seriously most of the time.

i use the 'other people' rule.

like if im playing this game and some friends walk in the room, is it gonna look bizarre as fuck?

Some scenes with quiet, def.

That new street fighter character comes to mind too.

Bayonetta has the problem of showing her skin because she is part of a witch clan made of only beautifull woman (if had for example an ugly/fat/man witch that also became nude ... no problem) and a camera man of a porn movie following her.

Quiet has the problem of not being the only character that has parasites all over her body but being the only one needing to be nude to breathe (The End made this without a single body part showing), is basicaly the only female character in the fucking game and has a
rape scene.

Just because it's a valid reason doesn't mean it's moronic.

It feels like they first decided how the character would dress (or not dress) and then said "how can we justify this?" rather than the other way around.

I don't think Bayonetta was a fair comparison. It can at least be argued that she owns her sexy. Same can't be said for Quiet however, and thus far her appearance is my only gripe with the Phantom Pain.

And no, Kojima, I'm not ashamed for my words or deeds.

Having her in a skimpy outfit is one thing, but criticizing that "taking commands" is now a derogatory thing for a SOLDIER?! I think having her say "nope" would paint a way more negative picture of "women", if we follow your way of thinking.

Also that she is available as assist. Wtf is wrong with that? Replace her with a man to scram "there are no women in the game. it's sexist!"?

No matter what you do, you are doomed.

She's easily my favorite character. The needless sexualization is really annoying though. Code Talker has the same thing as her, yet he's perfectly fine with clothes.

will learn eventually
Yeah the first time I read that she "breathes through her skin" that's why she can't wear clothing I was all

Quiet is a pretty cool character imo, and she's pretty damn OP, kinda sucks how she's so much better than the other partners as I love D Dog.

not reading OP cause spoilers

but

- it does have needless sexualization

- bayonetta's wasnt needless at all. it's the entire game's thing

You mean the part
where she kicks the private parts of a dude off?

Moronic? I dont find it moronic and i can say now we wont agree on this view.

So lets just agree to disagree on that part.

If that is "valid", then holy shit, even I could be a professional writer.

What reason are you talking about?

Photosynthesis? Which multiple other characters in the series have? Who all wear clothes because Kojima didn't want to put half naked old men in the series.

Or just the parasites needing the ability to drink water. Which didn't inhibit any of the Skulls or Codetalker or Skullface.

The bayonetta comparison is weird especially since you explain why its not needless.
The reason for quiet is dumb but I no problem with her other wise.

Yeah, I like Metal Gear Solid and Kojima, but his treatment of women has always been suuuuuupppppeeerrrrr problematic. It's probably even moreso in 5, considering literally the only major female character is Quiet. The other games at least kinda had good female characters.

I really don't think this is the case unless her design was literally the very first thing they did related to the story. The parasites that give her her powers are the central point to the whole plot and they're the reason everything is happening. Without the parasites there is no story since no one would have a reason to be where they are.

1: A horse
2: A dog
3: A robot
4: A woman

Note the other choices are animals and machines.

What does this even mean? Are you implying Kojima thinks women are no better than dogs?

Bayonetta is not hyper sexualised. That's part of her character. She uses her sexuality knowingly as a weapon. There is a difference.

Hideo Kojima is a lecherous hump, this shouldn't be news to anyone.

.

After Quiet, I'm p much done with him. If he collaborates with someone like del Toro again I'll be interested because he'll have someone else to call him out.

Quiet is the only interesting character on Mother Base also, but it's just so damn hard to get invested in any of her scenes with her outfit and the way the camera treats her in every shot.
