Persona Community Thread |OT8| Coming Winter 2014

I think it'll remain pretty high, but there have been small changes on the team, so that always makes me wonder. I've got a ton of faith in the whole team though, so I'm optimistic.

I don't think that there was ever a moment in P4 or P3 where a piece of dialogue felt unnatural, which is incredibly impressive when you consider that those games embrace the fact that they're set in Japan. Based on that I have plenty of faith that P5 will have a fantastic localisation, even if it wasn't as strong as P4/P3 for whatever reason.

I'd say that either the pursuit of the truth or facing yourself is the core theme of Persona 4. The power of the friendship was the obligatory secondary theme like it is for most JRPGs.

I would agree, but I'm mainly speaking relative to other games in the Persona series. The dynamic of the Investigation Team is immediately different than any of the other teams in the other Persona games due to how close they are, and how they come together by seeing their darkest secrets and desires. This was made intentional, just like how SEES and the other groups also have different group dynamics.

Oh, in that case we're on the same page.

Still, I'd say that the power of bonds is more central of a theme in Final Fantasy VI for instance, than it is for Persona 4. Though FF6 is thankfully more subtle about it, and I believe it's much better executed for it.

What is this "sub-buttle" you speak of?

It seems you place little faith in P Studio's ability to differentiate the games, as though they would prioritize shameless cash grabbing first. This goes against the entire philosophy they've reiterated in interviews, and against the precedent of the entire series until this point. Arguing that they would just recycle what works, how do you explain why P5 is so fundamentally different from Persona 4 aesthetically? No one saw that coming, exactly because they just expect "P4 Redux."

It'd be kind of hard for a group that fights together, presumably put their lives on the line together and share a common goal to not become friends, even if it was further down the line. That's common across literally any story with a group of companions like P5. But that's still a difference from the core "power of friendship" theme that Persona 4 had going for it, which was a focal point and not simply a side effect of other thematic points.

Going with what works isn't cash grabbing as much as smart business decisions. I never once said that P5 won't be its own unique thing so I don't know why you're bringing that up, but it's honestly silly to think they're going to throw the friendship theme out the window completely. Adding to that, I really think you're generally downplaying how important the friendship aspect of the games have been for the entire series up to this point just because you want to believe P5 will be its own special snowflake. The game can be its own thing and express new ideas while still falling back on old concepts; I honestly can't grasp why this seems like such a negative thing at all.

How do I explain P5 is so fundamentally different from P4 aesthetically?
Well geez, completely disregarding the mascot, ragtag main cast and vibrant visuals I guess they are completely different. Soejima discovered the colour red I guess.

Your second paragraph is basically what I was saying anyways so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Friendship themes being closer to P4 ≠ P5 will be P4-2

Hm, well I guess we can just agree to disagree. Again, I'm not saying that the P5 group won't be friends and have a strong bond, since I've stated that's inevitable in any story where the protagonists share a common goal. But I do not agree that this means it will resemble P4's dynamic. Persona Q made it quite clear, superficially, how different P3's group was from P4's from their interactions, and I would expect a similar difference in P5's group.

Though, this is kind of weird:

Are you saying P4 resembles P5 aesthetically and the only difference is their color? That's another point I really can't agree on, I guess.

I guess I forgot to actually detail my thoughts about the group dynamic. While I think P5's group will be pretty close I actually don't think they'll be anywhere near as buddy buddy as the P4 gang. From the bits we've seen the main four could be similar but it's hard to judge fully without seeing the full cast. Put simply I guess I anticipate them being a mix of P3/P4: close but with a slight feeling of anonymity. Not sure if that makes complete sense though...

I don't want to mindlessly speculate too much further into it though. Hopefully I can say more about it after this week.

Though, this is kind of weird:

Being pretty facetious there. P5 actually looks pretty fresh to me but I can still look at it and see the similarities (which granted, are mostly due to Soejima's style). I guess if there's anything to take from that line it's that it still looks very much like a Persona game, which I think is a good thing.

I think it will largely depend on how the new social link mechanic is handled. The presence of social links inherently means that the bonds of friendship will be one of the game's themes.

That's sorta what my thoughts are about. As the social link system evolves I can't see the presence of friendship diminishing too significantly. Again, not saying it'll be completely in your face but it's something that'll most likely be there.

You shut your mouth right now. Shut it and never speak again. Not another word. Not only am I putting you on my Ignore list, I'm printing out your avatar and using it as my personal dartboard. I've never sewn anything in my life, but now you've left me with no choice but to fashion a voodoo doll out of your likeness and torment it. I will laugh, oh how I will laugh as I watch that voodoo doll, that self-made effigy of my darkest enemy burn to ashes.

And laughing beside me will be Marie, beautiful and flawless. Her skin will glisten in the light of the flames as her pen bleeds a poem retelling the tragic end of MudoSkills, that miserable fool who dared sully her spotless name. And when the last embers have died out, Marie - the love of my life and the only woman of either the second or third dimensions who has ever or could ever understand me - and I will lay upon my bed and make incredible, passionate love, the kind a lonely wretch such as yourself has only imagined with your own dick in your hand. Only when we have both achieved the highest of ecstasies will we will hold each other tight and dream sweet dreams, and by morning we will have forgotten all about MudoSkills, his pathetic existence not even remembered by those who ended it.

Please don't take this post seriously.

Ah, seems we basically agree after all. This:

Is kind of how I see it, too, but we don't have much to go on so it could be whatever.

Fundamentally, my stance is that it'll be a Persona game with all that entails (coherent look, etc.), but with the meaningful differences that set it apart from the others.

Aside: Words.

I'd actually argue that the Power of Bonds was a stronger theme in P3. Or, at the very least, that it was just as strong in P3 as it was in P4.

The "power of bonds" is a secondary theme that connects to the main themes of both P3 and P4. P3 is not only about coming terms to death, but understanding that your life has value to those around you. It's fully encapsulated in the ending. P4 is not only about finding the truth, but expressing said truth to those around you.

In the end, both are about sharing a societal burden with those around you to help you get through life. Hashino's team specifically chose themes that lend themselves to the idea of talking with friends, given that was that team's new vision for "demon negotiation". P5 will be the exact same thing as well, with the new societal burden coming from limitation, as opposed to mortality (P3) and distorted truth (P4).

Now, whether or not you preferred P3's implementation of it to P4's is up to you. P4 was definitely more on the nose thanks to the fact that you could social link with all of your party members, but I didn't find it any more obvious that the core theme came from friendship. It's the core gameplay mechanic.

Oh don't remind me. I'm really sad that they didn't continue this series, it was leagues better than Trauma Center and the presentation was super slick. The Persona series would work really well with the panel-style story scenes.

Seriously I'm praying that they continue the series some day.

That and I'd love more Persona Q and more Etrian crossover.

Seems like Famitsu has a poster now, still not really sure what it's about :/

It's a viral marketing campaign, in the 'Atlus Persona 5' way. These posters are located in game stores and game centers throughout Japan, and scanning the QR code leads one to the TGS teaser website.

Can't hotlink from Famitsu, btw.

So is this the "Find the Phantom Thieves" event or is that something different?

The campaign is supposed to officially start on September 17th, and the Famitsu article emphasizes the start of tomorrow's Atlus broadcast (in Japan) with the countdown at 20:00 JST, so it seems these are preliminaries to whatever it's going to turn into.

Does that say "Report Now"? As in, you'd be using the QR reader to "report" that you've seen the thieves or something along those thematic lines?

EDIT: I just went to the Famitsu page, that's exactly what it says.

I remember P3 and P4 just having a big 30 minute blowout gameplay presentation. Why can't we just have that instead of this weird QR code BS?

I really hate QR codes. Did they actually take off in JPN, so it's more relevant to them? I have a reader on my phone and I have used it like twice in the last year.

I mean, we already know there's a stage presentation and a countdown leading up to something. Why does it matter if there's a QR thing that just takes people who see the poster to an informational website alongside it?

Yeah, it really doesn't matter. It's just a gimmick to keep things interesting and keep people talking.

Media will get to where it needs to regardless.

Nah, I suppose it doesn't matter one bit. Just expressing some frustration with the lack of information.

Just in case anyone was wondering: Like with the previous streams, I will be archiving the events as they go on, and making tweets on my Twitter account for those who can't see the stream.

I'm not trying to advertise any of my accounts in any way. I just want fans to know just in case they can't see the stream for any reason.

And of course, as with the last two streams, I'll be posting on here, too.

Well, the P2 cast
grew up together
, so they were pretty tightly knit.

Sorry for the image dump, but does anyone here know the video source to these clips? Is this from a new trailer? I figured this would be a good place to ask.
