MGSV - The little gameplay details that caught your attention

So I have been trying to do some S rank missions but the problem is that I am currently in the state of the game where all the icons on the map are red (the helmet, sniper, gun, night icons etc). Every area is covered with snipers and all the soldiers are wearing helmets and equipped with nastier guns. Plus decoys and cameras are showing up. This has made the game harder than before despite me having better equipment.

I tried to do some experiments with different missions to see what I could get away with using the chicken hat. When I did the mission without the chicken hat I realized it was easier and then I saw my icons and they were all white!

Equipping the chicken hat and then restarting the mission actually resets all difficulty parameters!!! This has made S ranking a lot easier!

Send some of your squads out on missions to sabotage the enemy reinforcements. You can read mission descriptions and look for ones with "Helmet shipment" on them and after successfully completing the mission, the enemy will have less helmets.

^also your equipment probably takes a 'leap forward' later than the enemy. you sort of get one around R&D 10-20 with the few core rifles and tools you'll use, like a silenced sniping rifle, improved NV infrared, decoys, etc

but a lot of that stuff is more for infiltration and doesn't help a lot with all the riot suits, armor, better helmets, etc that start showing up.... the big thing that helps there is around R&D 45-55 you start getting really useful upgrades to penetration or even handgun tranq piercing, and then of course the silenced anti-material rifle, and these all help a lot with dealing with the improved armor of enemies

but like was just said above me, always use dispatch missions to try at least keep their armor away hehehe i will usually use at least 1-2 of my units to try keep their armor/sniper rifles/nv away

//edit// saw a new little animation last night that I never noticed before... Quiet sort of 'embraces' the rain when it begins; if she's your buddy out in the field, she'll put out her arms and be like 'yeah it's raining' ... and then i walked up to her and said 'Quiet' and she gave me a thumbs up lol

going into the game, I mostly just wanted to use DD and then once I got the mecha-walker, I thought that was by far the coolest.... I really didn't like the... gratuitous... design of Quiet ;p

but now that I'm about 125 hours in, I basically use her 75% of the time cuz she's so OP haha and it's a lot more fun/useful to just use her Scout/Snipe commands from the iDroid, she gets soooo many kills lol

like an outpost of 8-10 guys takes barely 30 seconds now if we snipe from opposite hillsides and sort of ping pong their attention, 30 seconds later entire base is all KO and sleeping haha

and a few boss fights, helicopter fights she was so useful drawing temporary aggro

Very minor visual detail, but I like how the posters aren't completely stuck to the wall. Like if you notice the very edges of a poster from an angle, you'll notice how the corners of the poster aren't stuck onto the wall. As in the corners curve slightly outwards.

Did guards always call in reinforcements if you got a combat alert but you mostly fultoned guards and not did any lethal kills? I am not sure if that is an AI "upgrade" from my progression through the game or if I simply managed to avoid that scenario happening this whole time.

I thought Quiet was OP until there were armored guards and DD could easily incapacitate them with a stun knife.

DD is now my go to buddy.

yeah she has trouble for a while around Mission 15-30 or so or probably R&D range 25-50... some sort of 'range' in that area where armored guards will begin to appear more and she's still using that Renov rifle

but once she gets the anti-material rifle haha back to headshots :D

I do those missions all the time, still everyone is wearing helmets and body armor.

Those missions have no influence on your game.

They do. I regularily do this for helmets and riot armor because tranq sniper is my go to weapon. Works pretty good.

I think it was mentioned somewhere on GAF that you can use the chicken hat to "nerf" guards and you can unequip it after the guards have been reset to their basic equipment to S Rank missions (particularly earlier ones where guards normally wouldn't be well armored) easier. I haven't actually tried this though.

I do agree that it sucks that stopping transport of equipment doesn't actually do much to downgrade the preparedness of enemies, or at the very least it takes time for it to actually take effect.

I don't think the anti-material one has suppressor?

Tranq a few dudes during a vehicle side OP...truck comes passed, honks its horn at the armored vehicle, everyone wakes up. Bedlam ensues. I could swear the armored car honked back at the truck.

I actually had a guy walk across a Street to try and look for me when a truck came by. It hit the guy and sent him flying. The guys in the truck verbally responded to this and got out to check on him.

Except I want to fulton them alive.

If you're going for kills then she's the best, but if you want a chance to fulton them, DD is your best bet after mission 30 by far.

Helmets only really prevent her first shot though as she shoots them off (which can trigger the caution mode and they know where she is). Doesn't happen when I use a tranq sniper for some reason.

But yeah, DD+stun knife is awesome for those full riot gear troops that most often walk in pairs so it would be difficult for you alone to get both of them alive w/o an alarm.
(can you even tranq them? Seems they have armor everywhere)
Sometimes you have to help DD out quickly though or the remaining guards will kill it...

Well, I do them all the time too and I still run into countless enemies with helmets, armor etc.

I think this only reduces the amount of them wearing helmets, not completely removes them.
With increasing higher ranked soldiers (due to your heroism) the game also gives them better equipment along with the mechanic that if you do headshots you get even more enemies with helmets. So that combat deployment only brings the number of helmets down to normal levels (lets say from 80% to 30% of all enemies), probably also only in effect in the next missions/hour or whatever. (I think there are symbols for these things in the iDroid that hint at the current equipment level)

So without spoilers, other than meeting an old 'friend' on the medical platform what can be done at mother base?

A few things... Target practice, finding rough diamonds, terrorising and/or inspiring your Dogs, or simply enjoying the view. Aside from that stuff and the story-related events, visiting the animal sanctuary is the most meaningful thing you can do (and it is entirely optional). There really isn't that much overall, it's more for appearances than anything.

Edit: I forgot showering. That's the most important thing Snake can do at Mother Base. Yes, I'm serious.

Running around and meeting face to face with all your wandering staff, increasing their morale. This is a huge time sink and I honestly don't see what good it is actually doing. You can also interrogate them to find location of rough diamonds they have stashed around. Yes, your own men are hiding diamonds from you all around mother base. There's also the target practice side ops.

Biggest thing Mother Base is is a safe hub to stop inbetween missions when you just want to relax and goof around without being out on the field. It honestly is just like it was in Peace Walker, they just thought it'd be cool if you could actually set foot and run around on it this time, and it is. Also hey, cutscenes happen there from time to time, which is pretty major in this game lol.

Smoke grenades are your friend. In, CQC, Fulton, out, and no one will know the difference.

Yeah, the colour of the icon indicates the level of response of the enemy. There are 4 visible levels: no response (grey), 1 (white), 2 (orange) and 3 (red). Each level increases the likelihood of enemies having special equipment.

The guide gives percentages for all the different enemy responses. For the headshot response, the chance of an enemy having a helmet increases from 0% at level 0 to 70% at level 3. The increase is done in steps of 10% (e.g. lvl0=0%, low lvl1 = 10%, med lvl1 = 20%, etc.).

It has happened to me very early on, so I guess the answer is yes, they do.

Smoke grenades are weird. They don't cause alarms, when I kinda think they should.

i used them in mission 18 or 19 where you have to trail that guy in the car. When they were at the meeting point I got them both with a smoke nade, filtoned them and ran off, almost knocking over a guy I hadn't even seen. Perfect stealth, no kills, S rank lol

Not sure if this can be qualified as "gameplay detail", but I did this just for the laughs.

edit: It's a facebook link, so I believe you need to be logged there in order to watch it. huh.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but during a sand storm D-Dog will attack pretty much everyone in an outpost after giving him the order. lol

Just happened to me during a recent replay of C2W. Thought it was a glitch or something.

DAMMIT WRONG THREAD

I'm not far enough, so I'll ask about this potential detail instead of providing a new one: can D-Horse run out of poop if you tell him to "do it" a buncha times?
