Edge Special List: The 100 Greatest Video Games

Ordered the thing and looking forward to reading the essays, as those are generally damn good from Edge (and lists mean nothing without context). Loved their previous 'best games' specials.

Miyazaki must be pleased. :)

Not a single entry from the Diablo franchise, but they included all the Kings Field derivatives.

What is this shit?

Gotta love how everyone wants their favourite games in the list, or otherwise it has to be null. No mention of Crash or Spyro and you don't see me complaining. Ok maybe a tad.

I understand that, but no Chrono, MGS 1-3? Missing some classics.

No Morrrowind, no Vagrant Story, no FF VI/VII/VIII/IX, no KOTOR. You pretty much have to accept going in that stuff you love will be left out. This isn't the one true Top 100 games list...that's for you to decide, tastes/art being subjective etc.. This is just what Edge thinks.

Braid, Final Fantasy XII, Metroid, OoT, Spec Ops and Vanquish. Wow this is one of the worst list I have ever seen.

Final Fantasy XII is the worst main line non MMORPG FF game. LTTP isn't topping the list instead they have OoT above it. Metroid is on the list hahaha. The Uncharted games should be higher than the TLoU. MOBAs are shit, so LoL doesn't belong on the list. Oh and FE:A is not the best FE game. All the GBA games and the GC were better than it.

Lies detected. (I'm only highlighting Braid as the most egregious lie)

There's some bizarre choices and omissions here. I think EDGE is often deliberately contrarian about what makes a 'great' game and will hype up something to be the second coming of Christ when this is largely undeserved: LittleBigPlanet and GTA4 spring to mind.

That doesn't even begin to get at their longstanding aversion to RPGs of all stripes.

This and not reading the actual essays that will probably do a good job as to why they picked game A or B for this list.

As I said before, it's meaningless without the write-ups.

Spec Ops: The Line is only worth spot #99 but Battlefield 4 is able to get spot #66?

And where the hell is MGS3?

Way to recent focused, and no way to GTA5 or other selections as others have pointed at. I love games like Mario Maker and Splatoon, but they don't deserve a top 40 spot unless this is a 2010's list (which it really seems like for the most part).

This list looks as if it was made by/for young kids who don't have patience for old games or simply don't know them. Fez, Limbo, Journey over TLJ, Grim Fandango and Loom? Destiny over Diablo, Dishonored or Dead Space over Deus Ex/SS? Transistor over Fallout or BG or any other classic CRPG? It's a mix of overrating technology and accessibility (aka "dumbed down" gameplay) and trying to appear hip (with 3 Souls games or Mario 64). Deus Ex is still one of a kind. The new "mood" or "experience" games like Limbo are nice but nowhere remotely close to the level of the classic adventures. And the choice of RPGs is a bit wtf. Basically, looks like a half-informed hipster list.

I love Spec Ops far far far more than BF4, but it's not a strange opinion, the gameplay mechanics in BF4 are superior to Spec Ops, & that's putting it lightly.

No Chrono Trigger.

No MGS 3.

Only one Final Fantasy, and they pick one of the worst games in the series.

Yeah, this is a pretty crappy list.

...Though I will give them a modicum of credit for including Okami and placing The Wind Waker relatively highly.

I agree with number 1

best game of all time for me.

but yeah the list is overall is weird.

Dark Souls and Bloodborne in the top ten is interesting. I guess clunky mechanics and poor combat need love too.

They said Dark Souls and Bloodborne, not Shadow of Mordor and Dragon Age lol.

Battlefield 4 does have some good gameplay, but it launched in a pretty rough state. They could've picked a better entry from the franchise. And I don't think Spec Ops should be too high on the list, but it's a very unique and well made game when it comes to infusing narrative with gameplay; it's story couldn't have been told nearly as well in any other medium, which I think shows a lot of great progress when it comes to looking at games as art (in the narrative section, at least). It's a lot more significant than #99 to me.

My favourite part of these lists by Edge is reading the descriptions of the games themselves. They're usually very well-written and can provide real insight into what makes the games themselves so special.

As for the list itself, well I don't really care too much about what's on it and where. These things are far too subjective to ever be worth complaining about.

Side-question: what are some good alternative resources for long-form videogame criticism, in the style of an Edge or a Eurogamer retrospective?

games™ magazine is a little more commercially-focussed than Edge, but I know the features do go very in-depth when they get the chance

TLOU and GTA5 before HL2

Wtf is wrong with gaming press

HL2 in the top 5 is a controversial choice by itself. The original HL is about as fun to play today, and has a much stronger claim for historical significance (which they did not take into account, admittedly). The gravity gun was a fun game mechanic in Ravenholm, but didn't enhance the rest of the game as much as some people claim.

In hindsight, HL2 had massive hype back in 2004 and overshadowed several more noteworthy first person games. The "open world-esque" first person shooting in Far Cry has obviously been very influential. Butcher Bay was at least as good in terms of narrative and world building, but had a more cohesive vision for expanding first person gameplay with melee combat, sneaking, stealth takedowns, quests, and expanded social interactions with npcs. A case could be made for Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines as well. The gimmicky gravity gun doesn't really hold up today ...

Yeah, I disagree with a lot of this list. Not surprising though, right? Such lists essentially exist for people to disagree with them.

HOWEVER, I am perplexed by the series entries that they picked to represent certain series (MGSV and FFXII are the best entries of their series? Really?)--makes me question the whole enterprise more than the simple fact that our top 10s are different

You know what? I actually think Dark Souls is a good choice for the #1 spot. Flawed as it is, it is the first game that comes to my mind if you ask me of 7th generations greatest games. I am pretty positive that Dark Souls will still be remembered let's say 10-20 years from now as well.

Overall, I think this is a pretty bad list though.

Weird list. I'll always stand by that a game needs time, especially more than less than a month, to be considered best of anything. You have no idea how something like MGSV is going to age in the long run.

63 - Castlevania SotN
62 - Limbo

No Chrono Trigger. Phantom Pain is on there, and high up, but not the original. Battlefield 4 is apparently better than Bioshock.

Whew.

There are the Retro collections from games tm and Retro Gamer, but they're more pandering food for the nostalgia crowd. They have articles about best videogame bosses and such.

I wish Edge would release a collection of Time Extend. They're super informative and I'd love to have it all in one omnibus instead of going through the magazines individually.

is there supposed to be a connection here? because I don't see it.

This list may as well be preceded by a video game version of "Today's Hottest Music, <insert radio call letters>" jingle, it's basically little more than pop culture bullshit.

I.. did not expect this from Edge. What a terrible list. Just, how the fuck is SotC lower than Spelunky HD, Destiny, Dishonored, and Kerbal fucking Space Program? HOW?!

Exactly this.

Posting a list without the context of the write-ups in the special is never gonna result in an interesting discssion as it's just people going 'this list sucks because [insert title] is not in there' or '[insert title] is way too high, what have Edge been smoking'.
It's all meaningless without context.

I'm interested in reading it, not just to see them write about my favorite games, but I'm just as interested in reading their opinon on games that I don't like at all (like GTA V for example) and why they made the list.

The lack of Blizzard games is just mindboggling... Diablo II, Warcraft II/III, WoW, Brood War? No?

Definitely a console list.
