Edge Special List: The 100 Greatest Video Games

I always wonder how these lists are compiled. Like I can imagine some thought going in the top 10 or top 20, but once you have to discuss the ranking in the 70s and 80s, I can imagine the ranking process can get pretty loose.

Looking at their list, I would put maybe three of the top 10 games in my own top 10. Two of the other games I'd put in my own top 10 aren't even listed in the top 100. Chrono Trigger and MGS3 are games that use their respective medium incredibly well, and are held up immensely well.

GTA V not only making the list genuinely surprised me too, but seeing it up the number two spot is so bizarre. Maybe I'm hanging with the wrong crowd, but in my circles it's not even considered to be the best GTA game, let alone being one of the greatest games of all time.

i highlighted some reasons.
I read them and they were sound reasons. But most seem to be disagreements which I don't understand.

Because they don't agree with it. I wonder how many people taking shots at this list are actually gonna read the write-ups. I mean, my top 100 would be very different (though Bloodborne and Dark Souls would be way up), but I'm still super interested in reading the actual essays.

I don't know who the writers are, but if it's of the calibre of Simon Parkin, it's pretty much a must-read.
Seems like it.

This list just screams "recency bias" to me.

But I think these lists are a little arbitrary anyways. I feel like if someone really wanted to make a top list of all time, you would survey gamers 3-6 months after release on a few specific constructs.

I'm not sure if the publication itself specifies this, but if I recall correctly Edge's Facebook and Twitter posts about this issue state it's specifically a modern classics issue.

EDIT: The cover of the issue states "The Ultimate Collection of Modern Classics".

Just going to quote this and leave it here, because people aren't reading the first page

Number 1? Have you ever played any other good game?

TLOU is good but not HL2-tier.

I'm still amused at "best games to play right now" having OoT in the top 10. It was funny in 2007, and its funny in 2015. The game is positively ancient. Clearly the product of some developers figuring out how to do a third person action title for the first time in 1998, and it feels more and more its age with every passing year.

No one is reading the criteria for the list.

Even with the criteria, UT99 & Quake III beat out every other FPS on that list. They're timeless, and are just as playable today as they were 16 years ago. The fact neither of them made it is just mindblowing to me.

the pacing is still god tier. even the zeldas the followed couldn't match it.

The 3DS version enhances it somewhat but, you're right. I would say most of the 3D Zeldas STILL feel like OoT mechanically though.

box-pushing/pulling and torch lighting never felt so good~

it gets even worse..
In compiling the list, we worked to simple criteria: all formats – console, PC, portable, coin-op, touchscreen – were eligible; we could include only a single entry from any series that features straight-up sequels; and each game had to stand up today rather than making the cut for reasons of nostalgia or historic significance.
I guess this explains why the list has a lot of seemingly nonsensical choices and omissions. Their selection criteria were very specific and weird.

This list is literally like a top 100 films of all time list, but one where The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is in the top five but Fellowship of the Ring is nowhere to be found.

Well, it's actually impossible to get a list like this "right", after all there are too many good games and taste is the most subjective thing possible.

That said, the top10 makes you wonder how old the makers are...

Depending on their approach it may be perfectly acceptable per se to leave these games off a list. It all depends on the criteria. Do I think their list deserves the benefit of the doubt? Not really.

As much as I love e.g. Bloodlines, I could understand if someone didn't want to place the game on a list, given that (melee) combat is wonky and that the game requires fan patches to run well (and for better balance). Again, in principle one could certainly come up with an appropriate list that ignores many of these games.

Are people actually upset that their favorite games aren't part of this list or not in the right spot?

it's weird again that objectively more complex and enhanced iterations of certain series are skipped over for the sake of historical relevance when this list already gives fuck-all about historical relevance.

No Diablo, WoW, or War3? Starcraft 2 over Brood War?
D3 is basically unplayable right now.
WoW is unplayable if you want a social life.
WC3 is LoL but inferior.

Till this day, I'm still shocked and awed by the scope of OoT. Contrast that to TP and WW, where most of the non-dungeon content is naff.

It's interesting I'm seeing so many of these posts. Personally, I think if I made a top 100, I would have to put a lot of games I don't really like that much. I don't think I've played 100 really good games in my life.

DS1 at #1, I agree. Bloodborne at #4, I think it plays brilliantly but I'm not even halfway through it so I couldn't say agree or disagree. The other top 5, meh.

It was nice to see Puzzle Bobble included no matter how low, nice to see it get a nod.

Lack of Mario 3, Diablo 3 and a few others is disappointing. Destiny charting is a travesty, but a decent list overall.

Very glad that Street Fighter IV is in the top 20.
