iOS Gaming October 2015 | Just when you thought your TV was safe from mobile games

So who is getting Subterfuge? Would be great to get enough people together to get some games going.

Pitta this must be a Day 1 purchase for you?

I certainly will be - wasn't aware of this game but adored Solium Infernum and, perhaps more fittingly, Neptune's Pride, so am always up for a bit of underhand tactics and dodgy dealings. So count me in for a GAF get together for this.

Picked up hocus and so far, first impressions are kind of...meh. There's no challenge, it's really simple, and of the 17 levels I've played, it always feels like I'm just brute-forcing my way to the exit. No nusance or elements to consider or mull over

Compare to rop, which is also simple and minimal, but you really have to analyze the grid and the ropes you have and think of how to move the nodes around to make the shape

I hope hocus improves, because despite its disappointing puzzle design, the game looks really polished. The overall presentation is elegant and slick, and the Escher-esque level design looks really cool

Considering I no longer work at Halfbrick I probably shouldn't be as chipper as I am about this, but damn it, I'm proud of what my team created. Speaking of Aussie devs.

Jetpack Joyride has a massive update with a new mode and vehicles around Back To The Future! The mode is a time extension mode, collecting Flux Capacitors to extend time, and while playing it you can use the two new vehicles; Delorean Time Machine and Hoverboard.

By playing the mode and collecting fluxes, you'll unlock costumes of Doc, Marty and Biff. If you want to keep the vehicles and use them in normal Jetpack Joyride, there's a one-time $10 IAP.

I pitched the idea, concepted the mode and figured how the vehicles would work. My team did an amazing job making it. The Delorean itself is so sweet, so many awesome particle effects.

Download it here: https://itunes.apple.com/app/jetpack-joyride/id457446957?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo=4

How are you holding up? Hope you are doing well and are quick to find your feet.

Also good job on the BTTF update- looks great!

Thank you so much for this! It's the best update I've ever seen!

I'm a huge BTTF fan and this is just brilliant.so $10 unlocks the vehicles permanently? And are the costumes a permanent thing?

Yeah. During the event you can play as those vehicles for free in the BTTF mode, but if you want to keep them afterwards and use them in regular Jetpack, you need to pay. Delorean is great for normal mode too, it's like a 750m head start in the middle of a level :)

The costumes are unlockable via playing the mode and collecting the fluxes.

Not too bad, chatting to a few people, I've made a portfolio website (http://www.makesvideogames.com) that'll help. Planning to go to PAXAUS and GCAP at the end of October.

Well the Crossy Road guys just released Shooty Skies, and I think it's killer so far.

Another don't-miss title is Skiing Yeti Mountain.

Both of these guys are staple daily commuter-rail podcast games for me.

Land Sliders is produced the guy who made Crossy Road and designed by the ones who made Fruit Ninja/Jetpack Joyride, controls feel natural and there are some puzzles and objectives, the exploration side of it and the collecting is compelling... you should like that.

All Australian made too! Skiing Yeti Mountain was from another ex-Halfbrickian too.

Tweetbot 4 is out, this time Universal and for the low price of 5$ (50% sale from its regular price of 10$)
Woo! So happy... but it's iOS 9 only? Fuck. Won't even let me buy it now on sale to use later (because I know it very rarely goes on sale :/ )

Though it doesn't map cleanly to certain types of games, I think the Crossy Road style of monetization and the elegance of how it has integrated its incentivized video has already had an impact on other developers and publishers.

Incentivized video has certainly helped bridge the gap between payers and non payers, and has made games easier to balance for both to peacefully co-exist as a result.
Woo! A positive impact on IAP implementation is definitely a good thing :)

I've only been playing the iOS version of Jetpack Joyride for a couple of months, have there been any other limited time costumes or jetpacks that I've missed?

Thinking of getting Tengami. Is there any challenge or is it more of an interactive art piece?

There are a couple of puzzles that will have you to think.
Nothing earth shattering, but it's not just press here and there and advance.
Still a short game but imho worthy as a whole.

It's like an haiku of a videogame.
Recently they published it on WiiU too.

No limited time costumes (outside of the old inventory switching system), but I had been making events, which were new modes:

1443253081927

These are limited time new modes in the game that popped up. Cut & Run was a Fruit Ninja crossover mode (60 seconds, slice as much fruit as possible). Bling it On is a weekend-ish event where Diamonds appear in the level which give you more coins.

They were purely gameplay stuff, didn't have much in terms of retention stuff like the BTTF Costume unlocks thing. The plan was to continue updating and expanding on new features with each new thing we did.

Nice I will try and arrange a game or someone else can take the lead when it comes out. I think that is four of us now any other interest?

Soo, did 9.0.2 fix the bug that you have to restart your phone after trying to delete something?

btw. Annoying as hell that Apple now reminds you daily that there is an update. I wish I stayed at 8.3

I am in the beta of Subterfuge but still doing those tutorial puzzles. Anyone in there as well?

No.

The 'can't delete app without restarting' it's a side effect of the Gamecenter bug.
Check GC or even the GC settings and see if your device just get a blank page.

Apparently it has been finally addressed in the (hopefully soon upcoming) iOS 9.1

9.1 should come in November, a week before or at the same time as the iPad Pro (currently rumored for the end of November).

Sigh....I do hope they will release it earlier.
The bug is really annoying especially if you game a lot.

I just got hit with the bug, I can't log into the gamecenter app (white screen), can't get into the game center part of the settings app (crash). I've tried restarting and nothing works.
Is there any way to fix this? I can"t log into games like Order and Chaos 2 because of that.

There are like no impressions of The Doom Beneath anywhere. Tempted to pick it up though

Jcho, you around? I saw on TA that you're really enjoying hocus. How much have you played? Does it get more challenging?

Eh...welcome to my world.

Reset the device (both buttons till you see the Apple) and you are good to go...JUST for one game...and you have to be super patient because GC takes forever to load but it works.
If the game has some timeout check before GC is loaded, you are screwed tough.

Unusual place, but AWESOME article that nails down everything about why I probably love Out There so much.
Possibly THE best article about Out There ever.

EDIT: it's a PLAYBOY article, so possibly NSFW.

I'm a huge fan of mobile games (as you could probably tell), but the pro-mobile opinion pieces on TA recently have been really weird to read. Very aggressive, some odd comparisons, and really buying into the "mobile is the future" mindset

Here's the closing statement of the most recent one
All the unbelievers will kneel before Major Nelson, Shohei Yushida, and mighty GabeN someday And if you also think vinyl records, movie rentals, and horse-drawn carriages are also booming industries with major growth potential, well, who the hell am I to dissuade you?

I agree. I love mobile gaming, but their articles have just been ridiculously "mobile is God" over the top. And the thing is they keep writing and writing about it incessantly. It's like they see a comment in the comment section that goes counter to what they are saying and they have to take turns writing these bombastic editorials with a slightly different take just to make it sound new.

Save Shaun Musgrave, TA's editorial staff is a joke and these kind of articles are making it hard to even take the site seriously at all.

Don't want to focus on the TA part of it too much, but rather the ideas and notions themselves

On GAF and on the flipside, those TA opinion pieces, there are two dominant views. Either mobile sucks and shouldn't exist, or mobile is killing PC and consoles and will be the main form of gaming in the future

Almost no one likes to consider that perhaps the mobile, PC, and consoles can co-exist.

We've seen it now, with how closely PC and mobile are linked. Myriad ports from PC to mobile and mobile to PC, cross-platform releases and functionalities, etc. Split-screen experiences and apps. Devs making their start on mobile before moving to PC and consoles.

Finished Hocus... I liked it. The perspectives are quite tricky and finding the path to the exit is entertaining, even if the game doesnt introduce new things along the way, the difficulty curve isnt smooth or there isnt much to it besides swiping in all directions. There was something nice about it, for example, that is felt unique.

Has anyone 'solved' SPL-T yet? I've kind of hit a wall and am afraid to venture too far into the internet as I don't want everything totally spoiled for me.

I heard the definitive solution to the GameCenter is extremely painful: start over. A clean and fresh install. Like when you first started your iPhone or iPad. I am considering this option, but need to finish some games first, like Hero Emblems or Tales from outer Space. It will be painful, but if it is the only solution... Also will be a way to start over and delete some games I dont play anymore but refuse to delete...

Well I'm downloading the beta as we speak because i can't stand that crap. And i've heard that 9.1 is much faster and more stable so I think it'll be great.

Some Advice: The freezing while deleting apps still happens, but a lot less. GameCenter bug isnt fixed, but you have to restart the phone at least once a day instead of quite a few times per day. Is more stable and faster, yes, but its not fixed. Dont expect it to be candy land. Its just a little better overall.

Well it's not working at all even with a restart. So it can't be worse than this.

You guys really aren't helping in having me getting the beta.

Killercow...do you happen to have recently installed a new app or played something it was long since you last played?
Because I've read the bug can happen when you mix old games with GC and new ones.
I got the bug when I rolled back to previous version Battle of the Bulge.
Some people (not me but many on Apple forums) had success identifying those apps and deleting them (from PC because the system freezes on delete)....after that life was normal as before.

Apple should hurry up...this is a HUGE bug considering gaming is pretty widespread on their devices and Apple TV is coming (LOL...imagine the new Apple TV frozen on your TV).
Sometimes I really think they are in the gaming scene for pure chance and they do not give a damn.

It's a shame to hear others with all the GC issues. Is it only those of you with more than 200 friends having the issue?

I've 103 so no, this is not related to number of friends.

All of a sudden my iPhone 6 got Gamecenter back.
iPad Air still in the limbo.

So I'm guessing Apple is tinkering with their servers...and hopefully this won't require a new iOS version but its a server problem.

This "Gorgeous Games" promotion is really tempting.

I'm not the biggest racing fan but Horizon Chase is so pretty, really tempting. Kami is also tempting, such a pretty game.

I need some advice Gaf.

My GC is still on limbo (after trying everything, while yesterday it worked perfectly), but my guess was the same as yours: Apple must be working hard on it.

Horizon Chase is a tribute to the 80s racers like OutRun, Cruising USA, etc.. I dont really like racing games but that one is great.

Tales from Outer Space for a dollar is a must have. Brilliant adventure, highly polished, by Frontier.

It's odd. I haven't had any issues on my Mini 2 except one game that wouldn't load until I got my friends under 200.

Just saw that IGN's free game of the month is The Executive. Bizarre and fun beat em up.
Grab it if you don't have it already. Just also know that it takes up over a gig in space.

I'm not a big racing fan either but Horizon Chase is definitely a steal at 99 cents.

Dammit Gaf. I guess I'll grab it.

I don't know Tales From Outer Space, will do some research.

Honestly almost every game in there is great. Only ones I can't vouch for are Domino Drop and Lines the game.

I personally would put Horizon Chase, Legend of Grimlock, Out There and Tales from Deep Space as must have along with Sorcery 3 (but that one is probably better if you play the first two). I know Superbrothers has a huge following but it never really clicked with me.

But really, don't think you can go wrong with any of them if they sound up your alley.

If there's one thing I can praise Apple for it's that their editorial staff really does a pretty good job at highlighting good games, including the sales they organize.

Most of them caught my eye but this month I already bought Minecraft so I'm trying to not spend a ton more money on games. At 1 euro I can bite one or two but I'm trying to see the best ones.

Horizon jumped at me since it's pretty recent and has had a ton of good buzz.
