Friday the 13th: The Game KickStarter: $700k, 1 vs7 MP. The game Sessler teased.

Sorry, but if a publisher isn't even willing to pony up $700K for a licensed property like this, I've really got a feeling what they have so far isn't very strong.

According to Sessler the license was offered gratis, so I'm assuming their decision to skip a publisher and go for crowdfunding must be related in some way.

$700k isn't the entire budget - it's likely the publisher is 'ponying up' more than that. Besides, that has nothing to do with what they already have -- clearly it was good enough to secure the license, which is something.

Does anyone know what sort of % KS campaigns make in their first 24 hours? I'd say this has to be above $150k this time tomorrow to have a shot at $700k.

Interesting, good to hear about the Sesss again. Missed that guy, I'm definitely intrigued by this idea. Gonna back it up and hope for the best.

Edit: Didn't know Tom Savini is working on this too, that's pretty damn sweet.

Sounds almost exactly like Evolve, and we know how much fun that was. That is, fun for a match or two before I dropped it forever.
The problem with Evolve is that the way the game changes as the monster evolves heavily affects the pacing to the point games can last for too long and feel like a chore until they reach the end.

Since in this game Jason doesn't have a reason to run away, the dynamic seems like it favors faster gameplay.

I used to love those infection custom games in Halo 3 where one player was infected and moved extremely slowly, chasing everyone else through a maze or something....this seems to be the same concept. I will back this

Agreed, this sounds a bit more like L4D but instead of 4v4 it's 4v1

It sounds pretty solid. I wonder if they'll be able to pull off balancing a 1v7 game, especially with the franchise's assumption that Jason is this unstoppable killing machine. Fortunately since they're adapting this from an existing project, the wait time for this to actually come out may not be as excruciating as other Kickstarters.

That said, I think it's odd they aren't just getting a publisher on-board for this. They cite 'not wanting to compromise vision for a T-rated game' - but most major releases are M rated. If they're planning on going so over-the-top that it may hit NC-17, that's exciting. But as the campaign is phrased, it feels like a cop-out excuse. I'm sure at least one mid-tier publisher would be willing to invest $700K (or more) in a game with Friday the 13th branding.

Wasn't this game suppose to be out by now?

It sounds like that initial project got scraped, the licence holders reached out to the team making Summer Camp, and now that's become Friday The 13th.

Why use Kickstarter?

The great news is that we’re not starting from scratch! We have already invested a lot, both financially and emotionally, into Slasher Vol. 1: Summer Camp. This isn’t a request to put money towards an idea or vertical slice, but when we got the rights to Friday the 13th we knew we had to make the game better, with more features and content that complements the franchise. To put it bluntly, we wanted this game to be every bit as big as the franchise on which it is based.

We love the Friday the 13th franchise. Seriously, we love slashers through and through, and we know that horror fans can sense when something is phoned in without the care and attention to detail the genre deserves. We know this because we are fans. Friday the 13th was the biggest inspiration for Summer Camp so we were understandably thrilled beyond belief to have the opportunity to make an official Friday the 13th game. To do this right we had to change our original approach to take full advantage of a license that allows us to do something bigger, more focused, and better. That change is why we’re here. We need the extra support to do this correctly. For you, the fans.

Why not partner with a publisher?

Great question. We love working with publishers, most of them are great companies to work alongside. Fans of the “Friday the 13th” film series know that when it comes to Jason Voorhees, violence, gore and nudity aren’t just concepts to consider – they’re necessities. Collectively, we wanted to make certain that this game delivers the same kind of fun, brutal scares and creative kills that the franchise is known for and didn’t want to risk having to tell our story with a “T” for Teen rating. We don’t want that. You don’t want that.

We’re not interested in compromising what made the film franchise so popular. We’re interested in building precisely what we, as fans, want. The ultimate Friday the 13th experience. Blood, guts, gore, brutal kills, and more. You want an experience true to the films, and so do we. It’s about creative control and delivering the best game we can. We want to share that control, with you, not a publisher.

Well this sounds like it will be more of a stealth game. The counsellors hiding from Jason and Jason stalking them and taking out players one-by-one

Sessler is looking great; will back this today. Wonder what all the stretch goals are, though. Are they implying you can be someone else besides Jason if they raise enough money?

I'd back it if I saw it and it looked good. I have nothing to go on. I hope it turns out great and will gladly buy it down the line if it is.

I'd argue its basic premise is flawed but I thought after L4D maybe Turtle Rock could've proved me wrong. Execution and DLC were just cherries on the turd sundae.
I feel evolve would have worked much better if the monster wasn't so weak at the start of a match. It's basically hide a seek for the monster until it reaches max level. This sounds like the reverse with Jason being powerful and the campers being basically fucked if they run into him. Which is how it should be.

I hope this gets funded because it sounds awesome.

Also makes me wonder what happened to the horror game that was basically going to be Friday the 13th where it was a slasher game set in a cabin in the woods and you played the killer. I don't know if it ever went into actual development but i remember reading about it years ago.

Is Jason restricted to walking, and do the other players trip often?
I should point out that Jason actually ran a few times in Friday the 13th part 2 and Friday the 13th Part 3. The whole "only walking" thing only started in The (not so) Final Chapter. And he still ran in Freddy vs Jason and the Friday the 13th Reboot.

Still, Jason only walking is so ingrained in the popular perception of him that I could understand if they went that route. Hopefully if they add offscreen teleports, they don't make them as silly as they were in Jason Takes Manhattan.
Jason's mother. ;)
HOLY SHIT THIS WOULD BE AMAZING

It's too bad Betsy Palmer died recently. :( She was easily the best part of the first Friday the 13th. Jason was never as scary as her in a turtleneck (Even if he was more cuddly).

There were two - this one was originally Slasher Vol 1: Summer Camp, which was announced last fall and got the license for F13 earlier this year. Then there was Last Year, which had a kickstarter last year and is still in dev I think.

There's gotta be a first person mode on Jason.

Also some type of variations, take some notes from nrs (lmaooo) and get the Jason variations

The thing like I about Jason (and works really well here) is that even though his iconic weapon is the machete, he doesn't mind using other weapons or the environment

Friday the 13th game? Yessss!

3rd person isometric multiplayer game? Ummmmmm

I know the whole Alien Isolation/Outlast formula may have been low hanging fruit, but come on. The game makes itself!

According to some people in this thread, if an idea vaguely similar to what you're doing didn't turn out well, you shouldn't even bother trying. And if you can't find a publisher willing to fully fund your project, again, don't bother, because Kickstarter has never worked before. What the fuck?

I love Sessler, but I don't see this game doing well. I mean, the movie franchise has been flopping for how long now? I can't imagine a game would do much better. Hope I'm wrong though.

This is NOT the game that got in the legal trouble, that was a game called LAST YEAR and it was already funded with a more reasonable goal... They got in trouble for pictures such as this
lastyearscreenshot.jpg

where they were obviously using Jason as the villain.

I love Friday the 13th and horror movies in general, they are all I watch... But 700,000 for a Friday the 13th game is pretty damn insane if you ask me.

I am backing it, but I doubt they will reach that goal.

Yeah. Sounds like a game where if you play it the way it is supposed to be played, then it has some amount of game of the year potential...but no one has seven friends, and randoms never make things better.
