Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Eschatos update

Honestly the plan was just to grind out some levels so I can unlock everything. I'm trying to hurry things along so I can write a review by Monday or so.

But hey...I'll accept this.
CA6EA2421FE4635A0BF9AF0BC0BF66149344F649

I never bothered to get around to checking out some boss-strat videos.

The thing I should've realized about the power-ups is that they grant a second of invulnerability. At critical points I was able to grab one and scoot through the more ridiculous final boss patterns.

Area 11 is also the furthest I've gotten on Hard difficulty (I started this loop with three lives), so that's icing on the cake.

EDIT: Just to be certain that I didn't fluke, I went ahead and 1CCed Original Normal (no-looping this time). My performance against the final boss was almost as pathetic as my hi-score (lost 5 lives! Good thing I entered the fight with 7). But whatever, the deed is done.

Blue Revolver is so cool, I can't believe I waited until now to try the demo.
And I can't believe I missed the deadline for the scoring challenge by just two days. ;____;

Oh well, I'm at 26 mil right now with a terrible run which doesn't even get the clear, I think I'll be able to reach the 30 mil with a bit more work.

I've been trying to tell people about this game for months ><.

Been reading about the Ghost Blade release on Dreamcast and it seems that the game is pretty much not good. Hate that it is, because it would looking to be pretty cool from what I saw a few months back, but I believe it. Redux: Dark Matters was not a good experience for me. It's also the reason why I don't give Bullet Heaven the time of day anymore on their reviews. Hell, I don't think they even have that Redux review up anymore.

I'm really thinking about compiling a list of Shmups that are due for release soon on PC. I was doing that with the Next Gen Shmup thread, but this genre is so niche, I don't think having too many threads for it would be a good thing. I'll try to see if I can't get something together and post it up here.

Wait, there's more than one shmup thread?!?

I wish there was some kind of primer on the "best" shmup games across platforms and such. Because I'm sure most of them would either be on PC via emulation (I know, but I more mean consoles that you can actually own the media for, vs PCBs) or on PC just via Steam/GOG.

Need to hunt down that spiritual R-Type sequel called whatever, too. And Gradius... I've never played one before!

I found this topic just some weeks ago. ;___;

And your list is really cool and interesting, but if you're talking about games that will be release this year why is there Touhou 14? The game came out in 2013 in Japan and some months and some months ago on the western part of Playism. You can buy it here!

Now let's see if ZUN will allow Playism to sell Touhou 15. :p

Oh, about Playsim: few weeks ago i've sent a mail to Picorinne Soft, the small japanese team behind Infinos 2. They've answered me that they are talking with Playsim staff to release the game also on Steam.
They also suggest me to check out their next shmup, Battle Crust! It seems a cute old shmup, like some very old doujins

Is there anything like Raiden (and don't say Raiden 4) on PC/Steam that's worth checking out?

Anything like Reflex or Ikaruga?

XIIZEAL! (and if you like that, another game from the same developer will be out next month.

Eschatos is also worth a look--it's not a Raiden-style game or a Cave-style game but it's fast and kinda old-school without being an obvious nostalgia piece.

eXceed 2nd plays like Ikaruga, though not particularly good. Reflex is one game in the Alltynex trilogy; you should try Kamui and Alltynex Second if you haven't already.

Not much else I can say. The vast majority of good PC shmups are only available via emulation.

I thought there was an English version coming, I guess i was wrong. And most of those games won't release this year. This is just for every game that's not released yet.

Final Boss is amazing. You fight thinly veiled cameo ships from classic shoot em ups as mini bosses, like Arc Adder (Vic Piper), and R-Typo (R-Type). And you can turn into a robot with a Giga Drill Breaker that gets bigger the higher your multiplier is! The blue/orange color scheme looks good, and the sprite work is excellent. As far as I can tell, Raw Label seems really fleshed out, but they're probably going to keep working on it.

From what they say they are going to continue fleshing it out. I donated to them in hopes of them actually making full fledged release of the game. This is a game that does not need to be in the shadows and should be enjoyed by everyone who has a remote interest in the genre.

Any fans of R-Type 3 on the SNES? Really starting to get into that one which is (so far) a little easier when compared to the first two games. Slowdown isn't too bad considering it's on the SNES. Great Shmup so far.

I just watched the video, yet to play it. Love that the premise is the player's ship has the aim of becoming a boss. Why hasn't anyone thought of this before?

In Akashicverse you can become a boss for a limited period of time each level and the boss fights are against characters with the same powers as you, the TLB is absolutely hectic and absurd (that last attack.......)

Picked up Eschatos and was wondering does anyone know if there's a training mode I'm missing or does it unlock at a certain option level?

Edit: I've just seen that you can choose start stage from options, that'll do!

DeltaZeal is now confirmed for 10/16! In addition to the base game, we're also releasing the OSTs for DeltaZeal and XIIZeal. Finally, there will also be a pack, tentatively titled "Shooting Love Anniversary -DeltaZeal + XIIZeal-" which includes both games and both OSTs in one compilation.

DeltaZeal will have trading cards this time, and we'll also update XIIZeal to have trading cards as well (sorry it took so long!).

Please look forward to it!

Cool. I liked XIIZeal very much and will definitely pick this up! Happy to see so many varied shmups on steam!

The youtube reviews for Ghostblade are not positive. Game seems a little too easy. Seems like it has the same issues that made me dislike Redux: Dark Matters so much. The sound also sounds identical which is another part of their last game I though was horrible.

My God...I just got back from Tsubasacon 2015 in WV and they had this game room that ended up with something legendary.

They had a japanese 360 console with Deathsmiles 2 on it. I love this game and was shocked to see it in an area surrounded by fighting games. I go through and play to show off a bit around casual con goers to try and get folks interested in it, but alas the console stays empty all weekend. Then I strike up a conversation with folks about that console and hear something intriguing...

The console was sold by some local dude. $40 is what it went for with its whole library. Just a ton of japanese titles from what the venue guy said...something near 100 in total. He had no clue what he had though and he goes and says he'd pop in anything I felt like trying. He leaves and brings back a plastic tote full of games.

This $40 collection he got was a damned near fucking complete console gen collection of every shmup fucking made. He had Saidaioujou, Shooting love, Ketsui, Mushihimesama Futari, Espgaluda 2, Eschatos, Caladrius and more and more and more. Just fucking TONS of stuff.

And then I see it...Senko No Ronde Duo Limited Edition.

I got to live the dream. I played that son of a bitch allllllll day. Folks got super into it and started to join in because it was competitive and we were in a fighting game venue. The concept of a bullethell versus game that had gotten tournies overseas had them fascinated. I explained the assists, the basic tools, and they just went at it all day. Thing stayed PACKED on Senko No Ronde Duo casuals till close.

This guy is local and has a place I can go to play this stuff anytime I venture that direction since he has a local arcade sorta place that also sells gaming stuff. Hoping some day I may convince him to sell that stack but I may have made it too popular to part with for his travel setups lol.

God it was amazing. He had everything you could imagine and I had a whole room full of folks to play Senko No Ronde Duo with. Incredible weekend folks...just amazing.

Sounds awesome. And here I am having played far too little of my own copy!

Yeah, I'm still glowing from it. Just so many folks trying out everything they could. Folks picking defense assists and suddenly gaining ourobouros style shield satellites and playing keep away with speedsters that had good scatter shots (think it was the dude in the tie with high speed on the bottom...couldn't tell if it was Fabian with a new look or not lol), and others choosing to go with inside fighters and offense assists and just dashing in to go ham and fishing for grabs as the whole screen is covered in explosions hiding their melee and grab attempts.

Crazy good stuff and lots of yelling over back and forth clutch matches since when your health is so low you can go into your endboss mode and gain some temporary health to try and make a comeback. The times when folks dodged through those boss forms on magic pixel to melee them once it ended for the win were incredible. Just an insanely hype game that is LEAGUES above its "Wartech" predecessor that didn't have those assists (nor half the roster!)

Was their both a korean and a japanese version of Senko no Ronde Duo or does buying a copy from korea mean it will still play on the japanese system BTW? Just asking because I know the tournies used to be big in Korea and I didn't know if they were importing or not.

EDIT: NM. Did some digging. Just a japanese region code from the looks of things. One day...that game will be mine.

Ok so I think I'm gonna give Gradius 1 another shot. The boss music is damn annoying, but they seem to be over with in a split second...and that shouldn't be a reason not to at least experience the beginning of a great series.

That being said, NES/Famicom or PCengine? Same for Gradius 2 (I know there are some differences, but are they different enough to feel like two different games).

I'd say Saturn or Playstation if possible but between Famicom and PC Engine the PC Engine certainly seems like a better port.

Offscreen footage of Danmaku Unlimited 3. Looks ridiculous for a single man team. Sunny Tam has really stepped up his abilities. Warinside will be handling the soundtrack again.

Here's the vine footage for a smoother experience: https://vine.co/v/eE2tV02zKuv

Guys like Yotsubane and Sunny Tam need to come together and form a studio. I don't think we as humans would be able to handle the greatness that would come from that.
