CR actually does have a push notification for new chapters (provided you've opened the app since you last restarted your phone). It's just I don't always have time to read it in that moment, and so I clear it out, and there's no such notification within the app of unread chapters.

Well its all set up for notifications but every series I follow I never get one despite reading them weekly. *shrugs*

The White Witch and the Snow-Viewing Tea Party (One-shot) by Suzuki Sanami

The story of a mailman and the eponymous White Witch living in a forsaken mansion.

v1ZQCjl.png

Hitomi and Goku (One-shot) by Suzuki Sanami

The story of a man-eating monster and the sacrifice offered to him.

Two short stories with a similar, fairytale-like structure and atmosphere. As always from the author, the artstyle really makes them enjoyable through and through.

Sometimes they come a day late. But i like how it does display last chapter read.

I wish Crunchyroll had a better selection of manga. They have some good stuff on there, and I do use it, but they're lacking so so much. I know Viz gets most of the stuff I'd want to read, though, if anyone does, so I am stuck with them. Except if I'm paying that much, I'd rather just get physical copies. Bleh.

My main technical issue with CR manga is that both the web and mobile clients suck unwiped ass for letting me know which series I've favorited have a new chapter. There should be an icon on the favorites screen notifying me of unread chapters. That's it. That'd fix my main issue.. Of course, the website doesn't have such a screen, but it should.

The other issue, less main than the prior issue, is: it doesn't keep track of my progress on the webapp (which is mostly okay, since I very rarely use that, but sometimes I have to*).

(I haven't used it for a couple months now. If someone tells me they've addressed these issues I will be very happy.)

*Every now and then the mobile client just adamantly refuses to load a chapter. I've had this happen multiple times in a single binge-reading session as I'm lying in bed at night, and I either have to get up and read it on my computer or just give up.

Kodansha should have let them do ace of diamond and ReAca :(

I always get "New Chapter" labels on the app itself, even when I've read every single chapter in the series, and there hasn't been a new chapter in weeks/months.

Are the people that say Crunchyroll's manga reader is bad talking about the web version? I use the mobile version 9n my iPhone and pretty good.

It's just moving goalposts. People said they would pay for manga simulpubs when they came out, but then didn't because reasons (they don't actually want to pay for it).

I pay for a couple of them, and buy volumes for stuff like One Piece, but they totally need to stop fracturing everything and put it all under one banner. We need a Netflix of manga. It's really the only way for it to work.

I'm used to it. People said they would buy the volumes if they came out faster, so they did, but then it wasn't fast enough. Then they said they wanted simulpubs, but it either wasn't as fast as the pirates or the site sucks, or its not gluten-free or whatever, etc.

I think I pay $25 a year to read WSJ, which is .50 an issue. I don't really know what I pay for CR, but I've had a CR sub for a long time to watch anime on. I don't recall it being much added value and you can get all the manga they carry free with ads if you're willing to wait a week. And no, I'm not going to pretend when Soma comes out later today, I didn't read it, but at the very least I don't have to make up some excuse why I don't pay for it and buy the volumes.

I agree fracturing of stuff sucks, but its the way it is with every kind of media. I already have Hulu AND Netflix for other stuff.

It's ironic that you refer to Netflix, since with Hulu and Amazon aggressively bidding for streaming rights and making their own original productions the streaming TV/movie market is more fractured now than it's ever been. I don't see one digital platform being able to unite all manga publishers anytime soon.

I basically agree with everything you said. Some people just won't pay for it, but at the same time I feel like the publishers can easily do better when it comes to weekly/monthly digital offerings.

Simulcasting has more or less stamped out the fandub scene, outside of a few holdout groups. I think part of the reason why is that they made it so easy to watch everything for free. If you want to pick up a show in the middle of the season it's easy. You just watch it from episode one for free, can't really do that with the manga sites. Crunchyroll, for example, only offers the first chapter and the most recent chapter for free. I get why they don't offer the whole series but, I still feel like they could at least offer the first volume.

As far as their anime offerings go, the streaming sites aren't all that fractured. Sure, someone will have an exclusive every season but everything is generally available easily and for free.

Bleach 652

Well sure I guess Aizen is dreamy to some people

Nice to see flashbacks even if it is for convenience sake since Kubo isn't well known for his current fights.... I will forever enjoy character back-story instead

For whatever reason, it seems like the rights to buy semi-random animes for streaming rights don't cost very much. CR seems to pick up an awful lot of totally random shit on the anime side.

All of the girls get drunk and start playing grabass with their designated love interest. The dudes all freak out and try to leave.

Bleach 652

This not so much.

Fairy Tail Special Chapter

Natsu slapping Gajeel's ass was the best moment of FT in years.
I'm serious.

Bleach was incomprehensible garbage feat. a chicken headed thing

He used to compensate for having no plotting skills by designing new guys.

He ran out of new guys.

well he can always go back to more stuffed animals

The actual answer is that Tite Kubo is a hack. Dude's been coasting off the goodwill of the initial world-building and the shonen-stock Soul Society rescue arc for almost a decade now.

Such power within this small body.

I don't like the ring of what's coming with Ageha though.

Bleach really is awful. Its world is incomprehensible and lacks any sort of cohesion or unifying logic. Its characters are bland and uninteresting. And its plot is utter garbage. I honestly think the only reason it has had any readers (besides those like me who just read it ironically) for the past few years is that it was genuinely good and promising very early on, and some people refuse to let go

Bleach is basically targeted at the very specific set of factors that make up a human currently in high school, and no one else.

I only keep on reading because it takes between 1-2 minutes to read any given chapter.

I do think we'll never see the non fractured model that music (and books) has (so far) anywhere else. Which is sad from the pov of the consumers.

As for manga, I do read/pay for Crunchyroll manga and would pay more if they had more titles that I wanted. Generally speaking though almost all the manga I'm interested in doesn't have official english translations. At least not digital, which is more important given I live outside the US and no longer care for physical media. Part of it is I'm into niche non shonen jump type stuff. So for instance I'm really into Nana to Kaoru. I don't see that being published in english probably ever.

It hasn't even done that in years though

And the problem is that he filled time where he didn't have any plot ideas by creating characters, and then decided later on he'd fill those characters' stories out, except he still doesn't have any plot ideas, so you get Ise's cursed sword vs. a Chicken Man.

just noting that we still have no idea how Ginjou became a substitute soul reaper or how he met Tsukishima. I love how kubo even ended a chapter with it looking like it'd start, only for it to be nowhere afterword

Didn't Ginjo and Tsukishima show up again 150 chapters ago and then never actually show up again

One Piece 807

This just makes me wonder what the hell happened to Capone even more.

Bleach who cares

Holy shit this series has so many characters that we are spending multiple on this one who has not mattered at all for 650+ chapters.

Nanao has never mattered, lol.

She was my favorite design from the Gotei crew but Kubo did nothing with her up until now. He should have had all the Gotei characters matter sooner instead of doing it now when the manga is on its last legs.

Bleach 652

I can't even.

Tite Kubo is the master of bullshit. There is no other mangaka that I can recall that has such a way with bullshitting. The man got by on a good soul society arc and art. After that you get the Arrancar arc which somehow ended up lasting 28 volumes (21-48). 28! Like holy shit! It didn't help that almost every chapter in the arc had multiple pages a simple slash attack. Like, come on. What makes matters even worse is how that arc ended. An already OP Aizen gets even more OP and then it's Ichigo trains in a special place (I don't remember what it was, maybe the path to get to SS) and comes back handling Aizen with no sweat. He then loses his powers and we get the Fullbringer arc which was pointless by the end cause hey the peeps from soul society can just help you get your powers back Ichigo. What was the point of this arc if that could've been done from the beginning? Now we're at the shit show call theThousand Year Blood War (lol). Had to give such a name huh Kubo. You would think he would spend time in te already huge cast he has, but nope, let's introduce 30+ more characters. And the best part? Let's give some of these new enemies more backstory than the original characters. LOL! Guess what? This arc started with chapter 480. 480! We're now at chapter 652. Almost 200 chapters! Holy shit! It's felt like nothing important or interesting has happened at all. Has it even been revealed why Uryu is with the enemy? What's even more hilarious is that I'm pretty sure Zanpakto are suppose to be extensions of the soul, yet in the recent chapters Kubo's like screw that lol, not anymore! And this arc still feels like it'll last another 150 chapters.

The story had potential if he could've just planned it out better. Didn't he say each arc would focus or represent each of Ichigo's friends? SS/Rukia, Arrancar/Orihime, Fullbringer/Chad, Quincy/Uryu. I actually though that could've been cool if he actually treated it like that, but he didn't. The order of the arcs also really bugs me. Fullbringer should've been incorporated somehow after SS, then the Quincy arc and then finally Arrancar arc. Or something like that. Aizen should've always been endgame, but he's not. Why?

Wel I'm done. Sorry for the long post. I just have such a seething dislike for Kubo and Bleach.

Holy shit this series has so many characters that we are spending multiple on this one who has not mattered at all for 650+ chapters.

As I said, there are a dozen or so characters who are still around without any explanation for what they're doing or why, e.g. Ishida being a bad guy, Ginjo/Tsukishima being back, that one Arrancar that's still alive, Aizen sort of escaped and got out, but he's not doing anything, etc. etc. ad nauseum

Apparently all of them are getting arcs. I don't even know what the fuck deal with the Soul King turned out to be because the story is incomprehensible.

The art hasn't been good in years. He started moving towards random-part Lovecraftian abominations a couple years ago and hasn't looked back. Hence why we get Chicken Man.

Kubo's characters look better for the most part but his art has gotten significantly worse overall because he just stopped drawing action and backgrounds.
