Typhlosion, Graveler, Ho-Oh, Jumpluff was my first Gold team that beat the Elite 4.

I caught and leveled up a Larvitar to Tyranitar before facing Red.

I'm not sure what the heck I was doing, but as a kid, I felt like I skipped most of the Johto Pokemon.

Like, I didn't discover Pokemon like Dunsparce, Misdreavous, Skarmory, Natu and Spinarak until way after I had beaten the game.

I guess because I never really explored and only played after school, not late enough to meet any night Pokemon. So as far as I was concerned, they didn't exist.

I think this was my Silver team as a kid. Not 100% on it though.

#182 - Marill
Water/Fairy (Water Prior Gen VI)

All hail the PokeGod, Pikablu! Yeah, here's another super-popular Generation II pre-release Pokemon that was hyped up back during the early 'net days of Pokemon's popularity as an extremely rare Pokemon hidden within Red and Blue that could be caught via numerous elaborate cheat codes and was deemed "Pikablu" due to its resemblance to everyone's favorite electric rat. Then Gold and Silver was released, and the Pokemon known as was Pikablu was actually called Marill and a pretty standard Pokemon with no explicit relationship to Pikachu though some fans still consider it the Pika-Clone of Gen II. If you ask me, I see it as a counterpart to Jigglypuff, especially post-Gen VI where they now share a Type. Despite all the hype leading up to its release, Marill was extremely sparse in Gold and Silver and only appeared in one location with an encounter rate of 1%, unless a "swarm" occurred. You see, Game Freak thought it'd be a good idea to make a handful of new Pokemon basically unavailable unless an in-game character called you up on the PokeGear, which you had no way to influence, and told you about a swarm, after which you'd need to drop everything and rush over to that location within 30 real-time minutes or else you'd miss your chance to catch that Pokemon with ease. It was a pretty dumb method, and meant very few people got a chance to use Marill during their Gold and Silver adventure---thankfully, in future games Marill became quite more common so it didn't fade into complete obscurity. Water-type Pokemon aren't rare by any means (though now it's the only Water/Fairy ever), so missing out on Marill probably wasn't a big deal---in Gold and Silver it was pretty uneventful and not too exciting to use. Marill was one of the first Pokemon revealed to become a Fairy in Generation VI, which surprised a bunch of folks since there's nothing particularly Fairy-like about it except being cute, and I think made a lot of folks doubt the necessity of a new Type if seemingly random Pokemon were going to be turned into it without any real reason. Though it turned out for the best for Marill and its evolution...

Marill's basically a stereotypical mouse (and actually looks like one unlike Pikachu), and is interesting as a Water-type Pokemon since it's the first one not explicitly based on an actual aquatic creature, instead it follows the pattern Fire-type and Electric-type Pokemon tend to follow, where a "non-elemental" creature is slapped with the Type and colored to suit it. Throughout the history of Water Pokemon, there are like six or so who aren't naturally aquatic creatures, though some might say Marill might be one of the various species of "water rats", but personally I think they were just going for "mouse who is Water-type". Marill's pretty cute, but it's another Pokemon who I recognize as cute, but don't find it particularly endearing because it doesn't have that quirkiness I tend to enjoy.

Though Marill might just be a "Water-type mouse", it has an additional motif in its tail which is basically its own personal flotation device, filled with a special oil that helps keep Marill afloat. Unlike most Water-type Pokemon, who seem to presumably be capable of surviving indefinitely in the water without the need to surface for air, Marill in particular is said to be capable of drowning and thus depends on its tail to help keep it afloat. Despite the fact it uses what amounts to a life-jacket, Marill isn't a poor swimmer, as its special water-resistant fur allows it to swim at great speeds through the strongest currents, though you wouldn't get that impression looking at its abysmal Speed. Marill's a pretty normal Pokemon otherwise, all of its abilities explainable through regular biology, so once more it's surprising Generation VI implied it had some sort of special "fairy powers" since there was no indication of this before. Though as I'll explain later, I think the Fairy-type was given to Marill with its evolution in mind more so.

Marill made its grand debut in Pikachu's Vacation, and since then has appeared throughout the show's run in numerous roles, but I'll list the most important here for time. First, it was a main cast member during the Orange Islands season under the command of Tracey Sketchit, so of course it was totally pointless and its greatest accomplishment was getting knocked up. I'm not even joking about that. Second, another one became a temporary main character in Diamond and Pearl when Lyra, the HGSS female player character, joined up with Ash and Co. during a couple episodes. And finally one of the reasons I consider it a Jigglypuff counterpart, the ANA Marill. When the Pokemon movies stopped having Pikachu Shorts starting with Destiny Deoxys and continuing until they were brought back for the Keldeo movie, there were four special "Pikachu Shorts" that aired on All Nippon Airline flights and were later released on DVD. In these, there was a reoccurring Marill who basically copied Jigglypuff, Singing everyone to sleep and then getting pissed off. So, yeah, that's probably the moment for me I started to think of Marill as a Jigglypuff counterpart, though there were other reasons of course.

#183 - Azumarill
Water/Fairy (Water Prior Gen VI)

At Level 18, Marill evolves into Azumarill. Originally, Azumarill wasn't too special, and since you couldn't use one without getting a Marill first in Gold and Silver, most folks probably skipped it over during the main adventure. Azumarill had decent defenses and HP, but meager Attack and Special Attack, and not a lot of moves to work with, though Belly Drum helped it out a bit and it was pretty decent in the competitive scene. Since then, though, Azumarill has steadily gotten better in each game, and nowadays is considered quite powerful. First came Generation III which gave it Huge Power, an Ability which doubled its Attack to usable levels. Then Generation IV's Physical/Special split happened, and gave it actual Physical Water-type moves to use alongside its bolstered Attack. And then came Generation VI, giving it the Fairy-type which gave it additional resistances and an immunity, turning it overnight into a Dragon-slaying machine! This is one Pokemon I never believed would be considered capable of dealing with some of the most powerful Pokemon in the game, but here we are. I imagine many folks playing XY and especially ORAS, where the Marill line was readily available, probably gave this line a shot during the main adventure to see what they were now capable of.

Here we go from mouse to rabbit, but compared to our last Pokemon family this is a rather "Generation I" evolution despite the change in species. You could convince me Marill was based off an aquatic mouse, but as far as I know there's no rabbit that specializes in swimming, so once more this seems to be a classic "regular animal + Element type" Pokemon deal. I kind of wish we had more Water-type Pokemon like this---not every Water-type Pokemon needs to actually be capable of swimming in my opinion, and I'd love more terrestrial animals who simply have control over water rather than actually live and breathe it. Azumarill brings to mind Wigglytuff, and the main elements that changes from Marill are its longer ears, very sensitive and capable of searching out prey in the loudest rivers, as well as cute white spots that resemble bubbles foaming up which it uses as camouflage. I think I honestly like Marill a bit more, but both Pokemon are solid designs overall and I have no ill-will towards them. Their pre-evolution though...

While Marill relied on its tail to support it, Azumarill seems to be much more capable on its own as it's able to store a ton of air within its body meaning drowning isn't a problem. It has since become the "Life Guard" of the Pokemon World, so to speak, as it will actually assist drowning Pokemon by creating a special air balloon that provides a troubled Pokemon, or human I imagine, with air which is pretty nice of it. So, like Wigglytuff, Azumarill seems to have a similar balloon-like body, and it's another reason I associate the two lines together. By the way, I've always been confused as to why Azumarill learned Huge Power, as it didn't really seem to fit its design or personality, but I'm pretty sure now that it's an untranslatable Japanese pun---its original name is "chikaramochi", which translates to "Muscleman". You might be like, wait a second, why does a cute rabbit have an Ability called "Muscleman?" Well, the "mochi" part can also refer to a special rice cake in Japan which is said to be created by rabbits on the moon, and Huge Power happens to be learned by Azumarill's family, a Generation VI family based on rabbits, and a Mega who has rabbit-like ears, so I'm pretty sure I'm on the mark here. There's a Yokai Watch character who also does a pun off the "mochi" part of "chikaramochi", though it is actually made of mochi. So, yeah, Japan loves puns. You know, I wonder if this was the reason behind the Fairy-typing due to the relationship between rabbits, mochi, and the moon?

Azumarill has a lot of minor appearances in the show like Marill, but it's never really played a major role as a member of a main character's team, the closest is being a minor Pokemon of Jackson's in the Johto League, which went down quickly to Pikachu, and being used by Paul in Diamond and Pearl, who released it after it lost a fight against the Rock-type Gym Leader. If only Paul knew what it was actually capable of, he might reconsider. Its focus episode in Johto was a rather cute one where Ash's Totodile fell for it, but of course it already had a Golduck boyfriend leaving the poor alligator Pokemon out of luck.

#298 - Azurill
Normal/Fairy (Normal Prior Gen VI)

Generation III was for the most part a new start for the series, however there were two Baby Pokemon introduced with ties to previous Generation II Pokemon---Azurill is one of them, and a Pichu-tier Baby in my opinion who wasn't really needed. It feels like Marill didn't end up being as popular as Game Freak had hoped, but then they're the ones who made it difficult to actually use in Gold and Silver, and thus introduced a Baby for Marill to try and salvage the Pokemon's popularity. I don't think anyone was excited to see Azurill, and while Marill and Azumarill did sort of regain their popularity thanks to various factors, I don't think Azurill played a part in that. Azurill is odd because it's not a Water-type Pokemon, but rather a Normal-type, and also is 75% female as opposed to Marill and Azumarill's even 50/50 split. This actually means that in Generation III through Generation V, an Azurill could actually switch gender upon evolving! I imagine this was a mistake, and a popular theory I've heard explaining both this and its Normal-typing was that the data for possibly Igglybuff got mixed up for Azurill, and no one caught it before the game was released. I'm not sure if I believe this, but it sounds plausible---I mean some folks still think Game Freak fudged up the evolution lines of Venonat and Caterpie, this doesn't seem too crazy. The only issue with it being accidentally typed Normal is that it was a pre-release Pokemon, so you think someone would've noticed, but I don't know if its Type was ever actually mentioned prior to release so I can't say for sure when it became a Normal-type. Also, I really dislike what they did with the names here, going from Azurill, to Marill, and then back to Azumarill just gets confusing.

Though Azurill is blue like its evolutions, it isn't a Water-type, and is said to live near water but presumably isn't capable of swimming yet. I don't really know why they made it Normal-type for this reason alone, if it wasn't an accident, since I think it still could've been one due to its association with water and learning Water-type attacks, but that's what Game Freak did. Azurill is so small that its tail not dwarfs it, and it's often seen sitting atop it as well as bouncing around. Furthermore, the tail can be thrown like a lasso to propel Azurill forward, fight off larger enemies, and as the depressingly short HG/SS PokeDex entry tells us "its tail is packed full of the nutrients it needs to grow". It has a cuteness to its lore, and I think the way they used the tail in a new way for the Baby is creative enough to save it from being completely dull. Though once more, did anyone really wonder what a Baby Marill looked like?

Azurill's admittedly pretty adorable, and despite my feelings about its purpose I've grown to like it a bit more along with the rest of the line over the years, but the question I still have is why does the Sugimori Art show it being absolutely terrified and upset? Everywhere else it tends for the most part to be a very joyous Pokemon with a positive attitude, but in the Sugimori Art it looks like it's about to be killed. It actually sort of detracts from the design in my opinion when it's frowning, as it's best attribute is being cute, and seeing it distressed really isn't cute unless you're into that sort of thing, which you shouldn't be in this case since we're talking about an underage Pokemon. This reminds me how disappointed I was that the Ruby and Sapphire Pokemon didn't get new Sugimori Art in ORAS like how Kanto and Johto Pokemon did in their remakes. I guess the Hoenn art was recent enough and was close to the modern style that it didn't need to be changed, but still I'd like to see updated art just to have some new stock art to look at.

Azurill made its grand premiere in Pikachu's PikaBoo, and made its first in-show appearance in the second episode of Hoenn where May unsuccessfully tried to capture one. Misty later obtained one in the Battle Frontier season, and it was actually the child of Tracey's Marill---yeah, there was an awkward time where the show seemed to be shipping Misty and Tracey. It's never been said who the father was, but most folks assume it's one of Misty Pokemon, and going by Egg Groups, it could be either Politoed, Psyduck, Dewgong, Horsea, or Corsola. Most people like to think it's Psyduck.

I ended up using a Marill for the first time in Alpha Sapphire just because I got one from Wonder Trading and I'm not much of a fan of Pelipper. Plus I wasn't sure if Pelipper could learn Dive.

Never managed to catch a Marill in gen 2.

It was a lot easier to catch in Crystal, but I think it was governed by the day/night cycle in that game. I used one in G/S but I can't remember if I went through the trouble of getting it at 1% or what.

Yeah easily one of the beastly mons. That huge power. Also counters one of the types that resist Fairy.

Fairy needs a good physical though. Play Rough can only get you so far.

Never managed to catch a Marill in gen 2.

I must have spent at least 10 hours just running around Mount Mortar and never wound up getting Marill. I finished Gold with 245 Pokemon caught and 247 seen (curiously no trainer in the game has it in the game, the other family I was missing was Chikorita because only one of my friends had Gen II game). Damn that stupid mouse.

It's pretty fun to use in XY though yeah.

I don't mind Azumarill's looks much but the Pokemon itself is bro-tier status. I used one for both Emerald and Platinum Nuzlockes and it wrecked both games.

My Silver Team facing the E4 for the first time:
Spr_2s_160.png
Spr_2s_017.png

... I didn't start to properly train up teams of all types until I replayed Sapphire at some point. Was just powerleveling one monster before that till the end of the game. Granted I had to TM an ice-move to Feraligatr mid-E4 to defeat Lance and I never beaten RED with that savefile.

That's why I'm glad EXP Share works the way it does in newer games. It's a little too OP for me and I always turn it off, but it allows new/younger players to play through the game with a full, useful team instead of sticking with one monster or awkwardly grind up the lower level monsters they find.

Is it me or is Azurill's 3D model bigger than Marill in some games? For a baby monster it looks more intimidating than its evolution.

Hey Watch Da Birdie long time lurker and finally approved for a account. I'm happy cause this is one of the best thread I have seen on here its super mellow and positive and just a warm happy feeling.

I checked out this thread everyday to cheer myself up cause its quite the pick me up.

Keep going strong my man
I wanted to echo these statements.

This really is a great thread, and the tremendous amount of effort that Birdie has put into it is fantastic. Makes it a very worthwhile read.

I never knew Marill was so rare in Gen 2!
I remember in my first playthrough of Silver I had an Azumarill and it was decent. But then again that was just the main story, so it's not like I needed a strong Pokemon to beat the game.

I vaguely remember having a Marill back in my Silver version. I completely forgot that it was incredibly rare.

Azumarill is a great example of a fairly older 'mon getting better competitively quite naturally instead of getting one broken thing that rises it through the ranks in one shot. It's defenses were already half decent, then it got Huge Power, then Gen IV's physical/special split, then the fairy typing.

Building up this team was kinda fun because my old game link cable doesn't work too well anymore, so I had to drag out an N64, my transfer paks and Pokemon Stadium and trade evolve Haunter, Graveler and Kadabra through there. Found an Aerodactyl on my Yellow version that I figured I'd bring over. Barely managed to scratch by Lance, though. Only won because Gengar managed to freeze his last Dragonite with Ice Punch. Gotta grind them out to at least the 50s before I even think about taking Red on, though.

Also Azurill is a proof that the line wasn't meant to "replicate" the Pikachu line. It shares more connections with Cleffa apparently.

My one and only Pokemon Blue playthrough, age 7, consisted of;

My first SIlver playthrough, age 9, consisted of;

What else did I fucking need? LOL!.

I did have a second and final Silver playthrough 2 years later, age 11, which I've managed to remember with some assistance from a friend. and it consisted of;

My first ever full team in a Pokemon game, and honestly I didn't enjoy it at all, it was a pain in the ass to maintain, I just wasn't into the grinding like I am now. As much hate as the Gen VI EXP share gets, like a poster said above it's something I wish I had when I was a kid, it would have saved me from the massive burnout that I experienced after finishing beating Red and finishing Silver, something which led to my 8 year hiatus from Pokemon until Gen V came out.

To this day I still haven't played the Johto remakes, that region drained too much out of me to ever want to go back.

When remakes come out, do you guys roleplay as if you're the same person as the original game, just in a bizarro world.

I usually try to consistently name my starter with whatever they were in the originals and go from there. And some other random Pokemon as well.

Like in Yellow I named my Charmander Lazzy because I couldn't spell Lazy and get it, because the anime? Charizard is lazy? Oh haha I was such a clever 10 year old.

But in FR, I also named my Charmander Lazzy, because even if the name is basically nonsensical, it's what was originally my Charmander's name, so I went with it. Even some Pokemon that might no longer make my core team continue to be named properly. Pikachox the Pikachu, Ducky the Golduck (first level 100 Pokemon I ever raised!)

Typhlosion: Burnter in Silver, Burnter in SS
Blaziken: Blaze in Ruby, Blaze in Omega Ruby
I shall continue with Twiggy the Torterra in whatever the Diamond remake will be called when they get around to it. Finding a Brazilian Toxicroak off the GTS will be a hassle to relive my true Diamond team.

The thing is, other than my starter and some key Pokemon, my memory of what I name Pokemon is usually fuzzy. Even my team comps are hazy. So it ends up working out nicely as some sort of alternate reality.

I keep calling my trainer Ned though. I didn't start that until Silver, in Blue I was Love and in Yellow I was Ashyboy. Yea, I was dumb. So those names don't stay in remakes.

Also helps that Belly Jet Azumarill is one of the most fun sets ever, and it even turned out to be one of the teammates which finally got me through 50 battles in Battle Maison Super Singles after many failed attempts.

Oh God, I forgot how awesome M ---/'/'4 was. The first Twitch Plays Pokemon team member to reach level 100 and the backbone of our Emerald run.

I'm hoping that this is the right thread for this, but how likely is Nintendo going to be releasing Pokemon Z? It's been a very long time since I played a Pokemon game and I would rather wait until Pokemon Z comes out instead of buying Pokemon X and Y.

When remakes come out, do you guys roleplay as if you're the same person as the original game, just in a bizarro world.

I only did that for Soul Silver as my original Silver version battery died and Heracross is better in gen 4 than gen 2.

But for the others remake they acts as a continuation of my head story of me and Charmander continuing our Pokémon Journey.

For example the story for Heart Gold involves me and Charmander revisiting after our long journey in Sinnoh and we research into the mystery of Ho-Oh, Arceus and the Shinto Ruins, while trying to stop Team Rocket and discovering Silver's connection with them.

Heck I even have a time line of the event mapped out in my head which goes like this;

-Red
This is where the adventure starts.

-Yellow
The adventure starts with me returning Pikachu back to Viridian Forest, my Charizard has also devolved back into a Charmander for some reason.

-Soul Silver
My character heads of to Johto to meet Elm so we can find out why Charmander keeps reverting back into a Charizard, we lose Gyarados and meet Lugia the Pokémon that saved my character when he fell off a boat when he was a little kid.

-Crystal
My Character was researching the mystery of Suicune and the legendary Pokémon trainer Red who said to have vanished years ago.

-Ruby
My Character heads off to Hoenn to meet Birch to see if he had any theory about Charmander's condition.

-Fire Red
After the event of Ruby my character went to Kanto, to where we received a letter from the Gym leaders of Kanto requesting a battle. We come across Team Rocket and Giovanni who searching from something that means a lot to him.

-Emerald
My character heads back to Hoenn to find out how to removed the red orb that fused with him during the Team Magma event in Ruby.

-Diamond
My character heads to Sinnoh to meet Rowan who finally gave us an explanation of Charmander's condition, he has a condition that when he evolves he gives off too much energy and as a result is unable to maintain staying as a Charizard after enduring tough and harsh battles.

-Platinum
My character decides to help Rowan out with his research and spying on Cyrus who claims to be "reformed" after the event of Diamond.

-Heart Gold
My character travels back to Johto and we research into the mystery of Ho-Oh, Arceus and the Shinto Ruins, while trying to stop Team Rocket and discovering Silver's connection with them.

-White
My character heads off to Unova because Dr. Fennel wanted to research into Charmander's dream and see how his condition affects it.

-Black 2
My character was chilling in Aspertia City when we watched Hugh's Purloin got kidnapped by a strange ninja. We also learn that Ghetsis is interested in my Zekrom for some reason.

-White 2
My character is undercover, though it gets blown very quickly...thanks Bianca ¬_¬; and we are trying to stop Team Plasma trying to get their hands on N's Reshiram.

-Omega Ruby
My character heads back to Hoenn because Birch got his hands on a Pixie Plate and wanted my character to help him, since he met Arceus. The Pixie Plate unlocked fairy type powers and thus brought fairy type back into the world.

-Alpha Sapphire
My character was researching into the recently rediscovered fairy type and decided that the easiest method would be to catch one and go on an adventure.

After finding about Megas and Fairy type, my character travels to Kalos to see their origin and discover the dark horrible secret behind mega... oh he gets a crush on Serena.

As you can see I have played around with the story but I had fun doing that and each adventure feels different from the other as Charmander is the only returning Pokémon and the other 5 members of the team are new Pokémon, barring a few that returned to evolve.

I'm hoping that this is the right thread for this, but how likely is Nintendo going to be releasing Pokemon Z? It's been a very long time since I played a Pokemon game and I would rather wait until Pokemon Z comes out instead of buying Pokemon X and Y.

2016 is looking likely for "Pokémon Z" to be released

When remakes come out, do you guys roleplay as if you're the same person as the original game, just in a bizarro world.
I usually try and go the complete other way by figuring out which capturable monsters I've never used before and play through the game with those. This includes dumping the starter monster in a box. Sometimes the intended Pokemon just plain sucks and I switch to another (man, Smeargle's a pain to use in singleplayer..)

But I was thinking of replaying Leaf Green or such and going with my very first team I trained to 100 and did Stadium battles with. Though I've saved all my singleplayer teams from GBA and up, my Yellow/Blue team is the only one I remember:
Raichu (Wolf), Sandslash (Slash), Pidgeot (Birdy), Haunter (Andross), Graveler (Harden) and Meowth (Yes I trained rare candy spammed and used a lvl 100 Meowth. I forgot its name, but probably kitty or something dopey).
Raichu btw was a result of me trading my Pokemon Yellow Pikachu to a friend and evolving it. Maybe you'd get a Raichu following you! ...Ofcourse not, but in the end I got a way better Pokemon out of it so all was good in the world.

#184 - Sudowoodo
Rock

Yes, it's a Rock-type. And I'm always amazed at how many folks in the year 2015 still seem surprised upon "discovering" this. Sudowoodo popped up in Gold and Silver and played a role akin to Snorlax in Generation I, blocking your path. Despite at first resembling the small trees that you can clear with Cut, the player must instead sprinkle it with water from the SquirtBottle---after which they must then battle it and can potentially catch it. If you mess up the capture and kill it off, that's it, no more Sudowoodo for you! But don't feel too bad because unlike Snorlax, Sudowoodo really isn't that good anyway. The first ever pure Rock-type Pokemon, that basically means Sudowoodo has a ton of weaknesses and with its low Speed they're very exploitable. While it does have respectable Attack and Defense, its move pool is rather shallow (yet decent for an in-game adventure) and thus it's a pretty underwhelming Pokemon despite its rarity. Emerald once more had a single Sudowoodo to douse then capture, but it has begun to become more common in future games such as Diamond and Pearl which introduced a Baby for it, and in Heart Gold and Soul Silver it'd respawn after beating the Elite Four if you missed it the first time. Its greatest moment was in Generation VI, where it appears in a Horde alongside actual tree-based Pokemon and it just looks humorously out of place.

Although Sudowoodo looks like a tree, it's actually a rock...hence, "pseudo wood". Actually it really doesn't look that much like a tree either, but rather a simplified depiction of a tree...just like the ones you went around Cutting down in Generation I. As to why it's disguised as a tree, Sudowoodo apparently does it out of fear of being attacked (from wild Pokemon wanting to eat it? From Pokemon Trainers?), though it seems to have trouble always keeping up the act as it will sometimes fidget revealing its true nature, and during the winter it's unable to change its "leaves" to white, thus sticking out like a sore thumb. It also totally hates water, a very un-treelike behavior, and will run for cover whenever it starts to rain. You might look at the 3'11 Sudowoodo and wonder how something so small was able to block your way through Johto, but in Pokemon Special in its debut it was shown that Sudowoodo could somehow alter its size to appear more like an actual tree, though there's no mention of this ability in the games. You gotta wonder if anyone in the Pokemon World is actually fooled by Sudowoodo, or if it's considered a laughingstock due to its sad attempts at mimicry. I like Sudowoodo, because it's a pretty simple and kind of goofy idea but its endearing smile and personality makes you wanna root for it.

In Johto, Brock violently attacked a Sudowoodo by licking it. Years later, he got one of his own after it evolved from a Bonsly he caught earlier, which was pretty hilarious though he thankfully never assaulted it. Sudowoodo, and Bonsly, was the first Rock-type Pokemon Brock had actually captured since joining up with Ash all those years ago, which was pretty neat to see since in Hoenn he'd actually sort of become a Water-type Trainer. Sudowoodo really didn't do much since it was a Brock Pokemon, and in Diamond and Pearl when Brock got it he was pretty much in the process of being written off, though it was always eager and fun to watch whenever it did show up because it's such a naturally amusing Pokemon.

#438 - Bonsly
Rock

Sudowoodo got a Baby in Generation IV by the name of Bonsly. Though they didn't have much of a relationship beforehand, in Diamond and Pearl Mr. Mime and Sudowoodo became counterparts of sorts due to Mime Jr. and Bonsly being introduced alongside one another, being semi-Version exclusive (in Pearl Bonsly was more common, and in Diamond Mime Jr. was more common), and both evolving into their Evolution through learning the move Mimic. Though since then, the two of them have grown apart somewhat and aren't really considered counterparts beyond that one Generation. Anyway, Bonsly is a Baby Pokemon, but actually has pretty impressive Attack and Defense, though its low Speed and Special Defense leaves it pretty defenseless when faced with many early-game Grass and Water Pokemon, though for a Baby you could do far worse. Bonsly actually has the distinction of being the only Pokemon ever to be playable in a main-series game (of sorts) prior to its debut Generation, as in Pokemon XD you could actually use one in the "Battle Bingo" game. Basically, Battle Bingo had you use various rental Pokemon, and one such "Bingo Card" allowed you to use Bonsly, though all it knew was Rock Slide. Still, it was pretty cool they did that, and one of the reasons I found Colosseum and XD to be pretty awesome all things considered.

I gotta say, as far as Baby Pokemon go, Bonsly wins hands down for being the cleverest and not just being "this Pokemon, but smaller and cuter". I was quite happy a few years back when I found an actual bonsai hobbyist website praising the Pokemon due to being a neat representation of their hobby, and how it helped them connect with their child as they could use the Pokemon to introduce them to the concept of bonsai cultivation. Bonsly rules because it makes good use of every element of Sudowoodo in a new way fitting a Baby Pokemon, such as the fact that rather than resembling a planted tree, it resembles a potted tree, and while it appears to be crying like a baby, it's actually another "lie" because those aren't tears, they're excess moisture Bonsly is getting rid of. Like a real potted bonsai, it also has a small hole on its bottom used for drainage (which usually can't be seen), though unfortunately this makes the already phallic Bonsly totally look like a penis when seen from a lower angle. And in truth, while Bonsly I feel is a great concept, its actual design can come off as a bit clunky and weird, and it's no surprise that a lot of folks don't seem to be that into it, especially compared to the lovable Sudowoodo. But hell, I like him---Bonsly, Munchlax, and Mime Jr. are the top Baby Pokemon of all time in my opinion.

Bonsly made its worldwide debut in the Lucario Movie as a cute cameo Pokemon, basically following the gang around. In Battle Frontier, Brock caught one of his own that had found itself lost at a Pokemon Ninja School. Bonsly was of course a Baby, so pretty much just cried (or, fake cried I guess) all the time forcing Brock to take care of it, though I think this was a good way to show Brock's skills as a Breeder. You know, I'm surprised they didn't think to give Brock a Baby Pokemon back in Johto since it totally fit his character. In Diamond and Pearl, during a battle with Team Rocket Bonsly learned Mimic, and in the next episode ended up evolving like it would in the games upon leveling up after learning the move.
