Paragon, MOBA from Epic Games (PC/PS4, 2016) [Up: First Gameplay, Crossplatform, F2P]

This game looks like a lot of fun. I am really not interested in the MOBO genre due to my brief game sessions with them. The thing I think this MOBO has going for it besides providing a new perspective is that it has a visual space and breaks that make it easier to see what is going on. The other MOBO games seem too cluttered to really make much sense out of what is going on which makes them draining and confusing to play.
I will give this game a chance.

MOBA. Not MOBO. XD

And boom goes the dynamite ugh i hate this so much.

I assume you mean his reaction? But why though. His intent isn't that clear, unless you come in with a biased opinion also. He's just saying he dislikes those systems.

I would tend to agree. I think masteries are fine, because they're non randomized(like say Paladins cards) and equal for everyone assuming you reach lvl 30 which takes a bit of time but isn't so bad. I think runes are terrible as they add very little yet enough that they feel necessary and are there purely as a sink so you don't have as many ressources to buy champions, while also being a fairly large incentive to spend real money for rune pages.

Mind you, I haven't played in years, maybe rune pages are bought with IP now and maybe the prices aren't so dumb anymore, but generally speaking, the whole concept is terrible and one of the major downside of the LoL monetization process in my opinion. You have to buy runes asap because they work on every champion and give a substantial early game advantage(less so later on due to itemization even with scaling runes, but still) which basically means you can't spend any of your ingame currency early on for champions, which severely pushes you into wanting to buy them with real money especially if you play a nice one during a free week since you probably won't see it again for a while. And there's no positive for the system, it's just there as an annoyance and a currency sink that takes priority over the other normal currency sink, buying champions.

Note that I'm not gonna be like "hurr durr do it like dota", I'm very conscious no one can actually do dota F2P systems, but I'd say if you're going with champion/hero/whatever you wanna call them monetization, don't add a second layer of it that detracts from spending your ressources in that. For example, HotS does it better. You have other stuff to spend your currency on, mounts and stuff, but it's cosmetics. Other than that all your ressources can go into unlocking the hero/champions you like and having more fun, rather than spending your "fun fund" into buying shitty +good % and +gooder % stats so you're on an equal playing ground.

Now obviously, it might have just been the usual dota flyby "lel lol is shit" type of message, but that's open to interpretation, I'd rather give people the benefit of the doubt.

I do hope cards aren't like this. Though at this point we don't have many details at all, so it seems like pointless speculation. I certainly don't want the randomized cards that they have in Paladins though, and if they're out of game progress based customization, I hope they make them like masteries and summoner spells, stuff that you unlock on its own without having to spend currency(unless all the heroes/champions are free, then whatever make the cards buyable, same thing at that point).

Man that looked good, why on earth would they show that other trailer at PSX instead of this one, or better yet, show both at PSX, I just ditched it since all I got from the other trailer is another moba but now I'm actually exited to know more info about it after the let down that battleborn is and even better is that it has crossplay, I really hope this crossplay trend stays.

Man, can't wait to meet the rest of these heroes and find out about their stories. I think they all look really neat. Just a big fan of the art direction and character design overall. Even the minions look cool.

You guys notice this rodent-like creature in the mech? Reminds me of rocket raccoon lol.

Wow, was not expecting it to look this good in actual gameplay.

Definitely keeping an eye on this, I really like the art style already.

I like looking through GAF and seeing posts that take the words right out of my mouth. Definitely looking forward to this.

Smite style gameplay?
Looks like you can aim up and down so no. Gears of War style with lanes.

Ive been asking for this game for years and always told it wouldn't happen. Hell i made a thread about it last week were someone told me tps moba wouldn't work.

Love it when close minded people get schooled.

No way around it, that's a gorgeous looking game. One of the first of these style to peak my interest.

Genuinely curious how many of these MOBA style shooter games are going to be around a couple years from now.

At the time of this post, this is the first time I've seen that screenshot. I followed this game at a time where the teaser site didn't indicate what game this was. You just had five character teasers, and that was it. No inclination of what this would be.

So, it's a MOBA. Good deal. I hope I like it.

Well there's a few, and then there's the "not actual MOBA that get lumped with the MOBAs everytime someone makes the list" games. Like Overwatch and Battleborn. I mean ultimately you could argue they're moba because they take place in "arenas" but that's just cause the acronym is dumb as hell, both are really just FPS, with Overwatch having a large focus on objective team based PvP and Battleborn seemingly having a larger focus on coop PvE(but with also PvP, while Overwatch has no PvE at all).

And amongst the actual MOBAs, I think they try a lot of different things, each of them. Paragon is the one sticking the truest to the original formula, it's basically Smite with a better engine, Paladins strays the furthest I think and is very close to a 3rd person shooter instead and Gigantic is somewhere in the middle with a lot of different systems but keeps a bunch of MOBA elements in. There's a few more I guess but these are the only ones I've been keeping track of.

Not what I expected at all. Looks great and I definitely want to try it now. Any details on the payment model? Is it free to play?

I definitely could imagine what gameplay could be like, and this definitely looks promising as an UT-like MOBA.

Characters look pretty cool.

I just want to witness the potential of elements taken from Moba and infused to also one of the most popular genre in world.

The rise of Dota and LoL are astounding to behold. Don't disappoint me, Overwatch and Paragon.

At last shooter-MOBA from people who have a clue how to make a shooter game.

At least they go classic route for MOBA. Battleborn is over complexity for me in multiplayer mode.

Well like others have said, games that aren't truly mobas get lumped into the shooter moba discussion. However this truly is a moba, and is cross-platform between PC and PS4 so that will definitely help with the longevity. I can't wait to see more of this. I'd like to see a full match, different maps and just meet all the heroes and learn their origins.

This looks very interesting to me. Normally I'm not a big fan of MOBA's, but the realistic graphic style and Sci-Fi direction has made me curious.
Oh and boy oh boy, the graphics look amazing.
The Playstation 4 is starting to reach its full potential. All 2016 games have absolutely stunning visuals.

Looks like a Halo (or even Destiny) MOBA. Looks to some how be the most interesting one Ive seen.. I like the bigger, more wide open maps.

I'm still looking for a console MOBA with stats, in-game store and crafting. That's what I love most about DotA.
Smite has two of those.

They should go the HotS route with this game though. Global xp and no items.

Or no xp and all items.

So there's Overwatch, Battleborn and Paragon.
The year of the hero shootbang.
hero shooters in general... there was that thread a while back noting how many FPS like BLOPs or R6 all have 'heroes' now instead of generic create-a-character with classes. MOBA really are the influential genre now... reminds me a lot of FPS or RTS used to dominate and influence everything, and then everything was MMO-this MMO-that for a few years. MOBA influence into other genres or other devs is so big now.

Paragon is a MOBA not a hero shooter tho. Overwatch is closer to TF2.
Eh, I see a lot of shooting in this gameplay, mang.
I'm not complaining, though. Heroes are more interesting than generic soldiers. I just think there's not enough space for so many at once, I feel like Overwatch will take the cake and the rest will fight for crumbs.

It's just a coincidence that the heroes showcased are using a gun (two of them are melee actually).
There are several types of heroes in moba, including melee and ranged. Ranged ones could be gunner or magic user (note sure if there are magic in the lore though).

No, I know, I played quite a lot of DOTA. From that trailer it felt like there were too many "Snipers" playing.

I believe I only saw 4 heroes on the trailer.
2 of which are melee (the shield user and the assassin-like one), while the 2 others are the gunner (which is the main star of the trailer) and a robot. Tbh, I haven't watched every heroes teaser trailer though.

damn right

give me a workshop and ill make items for days son. FOR DAYS

It will probably take you a good month to craft armor and weapons for one character.

I just hope that this is a shooting-heavy gameplay rather some kind of action type. I can't see how tanks/melee characters would be fun/useful if the gameplay is based on Gears of War style TPS. Towers work in LoL/Dota because the range of all characters is limited. I don't want to see bullets disappearing/decaying in 30 meters distance.

Ending the conference on this was a huge mistake. The last thing the world needed was another MOBA. No wonder most of their best talent moved on.

You will. There is no way to balance ranged characters with "infinite" range, and so it's not going to happen. They will do it like smite does it, and just have auto-attack projectiles disappear outside of the normal range.

Why? Do the existence of MOBAs hurt you? I dont play them but this looks great.
