Game Data Museum lied to me!

The oldest Famitsu hardware data I have starts in late 1998, just before the launch of the Game Boy Color, so I couldn't really add PS1's LTD from that.

For what it's worth the PS2 lasted 12 years on the market, 3DS won't go so far.

Still launches aligned 3DS is outdoing it, using Famitsu 3DS is at 19.76m after 251 weeks, on that same timeframe PS2 was at 15.37m.

Wow, 3DS is surely selling fast.

Longevity is a great quality that PlayStation systems have yet Nintendo systems mostly lack.

That 15m for the PS2 was in autumn 2004, Famitsu would keep tracking the system for an additional 8 years, I doubt 3DS will still be tracked in three years.

It depends. Nintendo platforms are discontinued earlier, but it's not that PS2 was selling so well during 2009-2012. GB and DS were also quite long-running.

Wow, Wii U doing better than expected. Hopefully some momentum can carry into 2016
probably not

Mario Maker above Splatoon though, inkredible bump.

Wonder if the Vita can get to N64's 5.5 million LTD...

Not super related this week, but:

CRMpIvsWEAEUYYp.png-large.png

I don't see Pokémon in the Top 20???

Wow, 3DS is surely selling fast.
Like pretty much every successful Nintendo system.

It will die pretty fast too.

The great miracle of Christmas is selling 80k hw with sw released 7 and 3 months ago

the N64 times came back, you can only release 3-4 important titles in a year and keep selling hw

meanwhile the handheld sold 1mln units less than the previous year (which heavily affected YOY hw sales compared to the previous year, which already was the worst year as hw sales iirc), considering that PSV and PS3 declines have been totally compensated by the great sales of WiiU and PS4

good luck for 2016 :)

Damn, those threads are moving way too quickly lately!

Eh, depends on the systems. Obviously if you pick the PS2, maybe you should compare it with the DS or stuff like that.
3DS is a whole another story that will still manage to sell 20M in the end. No small feat in this market (and another story once again for the west).

While DS had quite long life still even in the same gen PS system outlived it (PSP) so it really doesn't make his point any less valid.

Edit. Actually PS3 also outlived DS

Now I've had a look at it properly:

Awesome for WiiU hardware. I'm also very pleased that Vita is up YoY - Minecraft making it a more attractive gift-giving prospect than it has been any other holiday season, which is pretty pleasing.

Software wise, everything I'd expect to have legs is having legs. Lots of lovely % increases WoW which is cool. Miracle Girls did decently; Angelique as you'd expect.

Jojo though... christ that's a poor performance. Can't believe they damaged the brand so much with the previous game.

And as for Exist Archive, it's not quite as bad a performance as I was expecting based on pre-orders (which seemed non-existent), however, it's performed badly enough that I can type my spiel which I had ready last week:

I think Spike-Chunsoft need to re-evaluate their strategy because this year has been pretty abysmal for them. As a fan, I loved what they've done in 2015 - made spiritual-successor IP's to things which have been gone for quite a while, the Ukiyo games (Way of the Samurai); Grand Kingdom (Grand Knights History) and now Exist Archive (Valkyrie Profile).

But for whatever reason, and I don't know what it is, the market just isn't interested. Lack of promotion? Heck, lack of letting people know that "this is the new way to play these IP's that you loved"? Wrong platforms?

Combined with a mobile spin-off that failed to take off (DanganRonpa Unlimited Battle) and a continuation of a long-successful IP for them which only performed mildly (Kenka Bancho 6), they've had a pretty duff year. At least Shiren 5 Plus and Witcher 3 did well for them.

I know PS systems get discontinued really late, but I don't see the 3DS not outselling the PS2 when all is said and done, unless they discontinue it the day the NX comes out. It won't suddenly stop selling because its successor is out.

Yeah. 2016 is looking so strong release wise that even if it completely falls off the cliff in 2017 it should overtake PS2 before it dies out.

Famitsu retail + digital LTD
[WIU] Splatoon: 1.074.909
First time a brand new IP sells a millon units in a home console since Wii Sports, 9 years ago.

[...]

Back to Splatoon, here's an interesting comparison.

Splatoon retail sales after 29 weeks (28/05/2015 - 20/12/2015): 966.801

Resident Evil retail sales after 29 weeks (22/03/1996 - 13/10/1996): 837.102, it'd take the original Resident Evil 51 weeks what Splatoon sold in 29.

Pokémon Red/Green retail sales after 29 weeks (27/02/1996 - 22/09/1996): 645.531, it'd take the original Pokémon SKUs 41 weeks to sell what Splatoon sold in 29.

Yokai Watch retail sales after 29 weeks (11/07/2013 - 02/02/2014) - 373.199

Splatoon is outpacing the first entries on some of the biggest franchises in Japan, that's impressive anyway you slice it, by the end Splaton should outsell both Resident Evil and maybe even the original Yokai Watch to become the best selling WiiU game.

On a different topic, while I'll need dengeki data to make sure, WiiU's software LTD should be above 10m units by now, with PS4's just shy of 7m.

That is INSANE. Splatoon is INSANE.

I certainly don't disagree with PS systems living longer, just that Nintendo systems don't necessarily lack longevity.

Seeing the incoming new WiiU platinum sellers approach the one million mark... I'm still blown away that PS3 only managed one million seller, on a console with sales of 10m. Meanwhile the WiiU at < 3m...

Hardware data before 98!? Hell I'll just share this.
I've been working on this graph awhile now, it starts where famitsu HW tracking began (Sep '96). It would take a lot of explaining but basically it's an attempt to reach famitsu revised data and/or match dengeki data. It's a good show of the home market from late-'96 thru mid-'01 in Japan.
PSX had reached between 5-5.5m when FFVII released (do the math from there)
That final spike for PS2 at the edge of the graph is FFX's release.
I'm a little iffy about the DC accuracy after it's first price drop, and PSX around holiday '99 (not sure how famitsu revised their #s so drastically going into '00), N64, PS2 should be good.

Edit: notice how well Sony used to perform at Christmas/NY.

Awwww

A little bit worried about Exist Archive; I wonder what they expected. I think the game probably had a strict budget so I hope it did okay for their expectation.

As for the WiiU bump, hopefully it means that #FE will do well, considering the system seems to be abuzz this holiday, and a few games are doing well. Time will tell. Expectations are low, I know, from people in this forum. But I hope it at least does as well as Xenoblade X (which was only slightly decent to begin with).

I think that's going to be tough. #FE's preorders are super low, and Japan is probably going to end up being XCX's worst market by a decent margin. #FE probably needed to overperform XCX in Japan to have a shot at doing well globally, and I just don't see it.

Yesterday (national holiday) is considered one of the biggest days of the year for sales. Obviously a national holiday just before Christmas day has a lot to say.

According to GamesMaya a lot of 3DS hardware was sold yesterday, and Monster Hunter X was the top seller, and it probably won't move from that position for a long time.

Wii U also sold a lot of Hardware, due to Splatoon and Super Mario Maker.

Additionally, Splatoon Amiibos also were requested. Sales: Boy > Squid > Girl

There's still something more that we can extract from the Media Create White Book. But I never find the time to do it. Maybe I can update some during my vacations.

Famitsu has PS1 at 18.854.258 and shipment is 18,90M.

PS2 is the only Sony system 3DS has yet to beat.

Next year has many 3DS heavy hitters and maybe with a price drop it will happen at late 2016 / early 2017.

What is this database being spoken of? Are Famitsu revised data posted somewhere?

I can see why NCL would keep the current price of the WiiU the way it is, given the meh state of the console. But man, a Splatoon/Mario Maker bundle for ~¥24,000 would have absolutely killed it.

Probably would have made wii u top selling console of the holidays.

This goes the same to Sony at WW market too but they can never sell more than they have in stock. As for WiiU Nintendo is choosing rather not to push the system price down too far so they don't have to pay to Foxconn to produce more units, so they can prepare for NX.
