I mean, I realize it's a massively popular series, but I'm still glad a 3DS game can pull off these numbers. Go, little 3D handheld!

Is it expected that we will be getting some sort of XU version after Japan? I am always thirsty for more monhun and can't wait for this to come west.

That is cool and all but you have to bring it here in 2016, I am pretty sure Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate did fine so they really should bring it.

God Eater, Soul Sacrifice, Lord of Apocalypse, Ragnarok Odyssey and Phantasy Star Nova?

Did you play any of those games? Inspired sure, but none of those are "clones". Especially Soul Sacrifice, it has almost nothing in common with MH except you hunt bosses in both.

Nothing impressive here, this is regular stuff for MH in Japan, one of my favorite franchises, these sell like hot cakes there everytime, it's normal by now.

So Nintendo has its exclusive Street fighter of its own? ;p
Verendus hinted the franchise is coming back to Sony platforms. Dunno if more spinoffs or an official mainline one.

it changes position every gen though. I would think we'll see changes again during NX release.

The franchise never left Sony systems, Frontier is available on all 3 current systems.

And yeah , Verendus says a lot of things that can't possibly be verified in a short timeframe and if things don't work out as described, he can hide behind the "plans changed !" excuse.

We already know that Frontier 2 is in development for PS4 and PC.

Nah. If there is ever a Monster Hunter on the NX, it'll be the fifth gen. The upgraded version of the 3DS game is just going to be another 3DS game, with G-Rank added. Just like Monster Hunter 4.

You say that, but Capcom are going to have to find a way to migrate 3DS players to NX in preparation for MH5. Doing a MHXG for the system early in the life cycle is the way they can do that. It worked with 3DS, when they launched MH3G early in the system's life, and I'm sure they have plans to do the same with NX.

True...

It still somewhat astounds me how incredibly well this franchise does, even whilst traditional gaming is on a general downturn in Japan. Is there any sales data from the first game's release? Just to get a sense of how things have grown.

C'mon you know exactly all those games were developed to make up for the lack of MH on vita. They aren't clones but are the same genre.

After seeing these numbers, I'm unsure of two things:

1. How did Capcom get is such a financially fragile state? Monster Hunter has been raking it in now on both the PSP and 3DS, last gen RE games sold pretty well, and SFIV must made them a quite a bit of money across arcade, home consoles and 3DS (which was the 3DS' first million seller iirc). I know GRIN's Bionic Commando, and Dark Void probably lost money overall, but those alone don't explain how Capcom got in the shit.

2. Why aren't there more Hunting-Action games on 3DS? MH3G was announced in September 2011, released later that year and clearly showed that the market was there. Surely there is a gap in the market for games similar to MH on the 3DS in the period between MH launches?

1. They spend mh money on a mobile devision that doesn't do as good as they thought. Only the first version of SFIV did good. Every other fighting game they released after did worse.

2. Other hunting games don't do as nearly as good as mh itself. I think there was a rumor about a 3ds port for God Eater, but it was canceled. If mh is on the system, why bother with games that aren't nearly as good as mh? And it's not just the genre but the franchise that drives the sales. Same reason not every fps does cod numbers.

there's a reason nobody counts Frontier.

Although Frontier 2 being actually good, not full of pay to win trash, and coming to the west on PC would be nice. Not holding my breath though. And I'd always prefer a mainline traditional MH. The inevitable day that the series format gets dropped in favor of a typical F2P grinder will be a sad one indeed.

I don't think God Eater was ever rumoured for 3DS. I think there was some speculation about GE2 when it was MIA but that was it. Also following that logic why did they make those games on the PSP?

PSP showed how MH-wannabe (i.e.action games focused on local co-op) can sell well on the same platform where MH is; see God Eater, Phantasy Star Portable. Like life-sim sell well on 3DS because Animal Crossing created a fanbase for the genre.

FF Explorers sold 300k on 3DS and it was an average game. IPs like God Eater could have sold well on 3DS.

Phantasy Star 3DS is the hit game that got away.

The series has history with Nintendo platforms, and the Monster Hunter fans would surely support it.

By the way, Hero of Legend do you play Monster Hunter?
