So where does the end duel of The Force Awakens rank within all SW duels? [SPOILERS]

We're talking about the same universe where Darth Maul gets beat by a padawan due to a 3 second delay after a flip

Don't forget: "It's over, Anakin! I have the high ground!"

The defeat of the all-powerful Chosen One is rationalized by a new rule that has never been shown in practice, and is itself contradicted by the same character in Episode I.

The only thing I liked about any of the PT is the Darth Maul fight, and I'd still put it slight over the Force Awakens one, though I can't wait to watch it again. Kylo was injured and Rey is such a novice. They're both going to get badass training. Just wait for the rematch.

But Jedi then Empire, Maul and then Awakens. For now.

I thought it was pretty fantastic. Less flashy and boring, better than the prequel fights,

I'd probably place it between ESB and ROTJ.

It felt more genuine and less showy, kind of how a noob with a lightsaber might fight if their life was actually on the line.

Definitely not in the higher eschelons of jedi fights. Say what you want about the pre-quel trilogy, but their fights at least made jedi's and sith seem like they were feared/revered for a reason.

Outside of a few force tricks, Kylo and Rey felt like normal people using lightsabers. That or I am forgetting something amazing from the fights that others remember.

Absolutely top 3

So it makes perfect sense? You're comparing actual sith lords and Jedi council masters to untrained newbies decades after the fall of the Jedi.

The prequels made them look like circus acrobats, not warriors.

eh it was ok. but there wasn't any tension felt. Finn vs Ren had more oomph to it cause it was a non-force vs a force user. then you have Rey with the manga power up.

i will admit it felt more realistic in the movements, which has its own appeal (they swung like the sabers had actual weight and wanted to *smash* their opponent's face or try to stab like a fencing sword), but i'll overlook it for now since it felt like newbies going at it and the next time they meet after training in hyperbolic jedi chamber i expect ninjas with backflips and shit. but i don't know if down to earth is what you want to aim for in its entirety.

and there's nothing wrong with them looking like "acrobats". Force users i think should feel out of this world abilities wise.

Maybe Kylo won't be the same and will be more mechanic in 8, and totally cyborg-like in 9.
Like Ganondorf became Ganon.
So i think this fight, with Kylo more "human size" will be well ranked after the New Trilogy.

Maybe we will be dislike "mecha Kylo"

really liked the fight in the end of TFA, visuals were fantastic, so much emotions ....but that was like really way too short.

i also liked the darth maul fight in TPM, but it was ..unsatisfying as what happened
anyway this fight was cool as shit

Pretty low. I would have given Ren bonus points if he caused the earthquake to separate him with Rey to escape, but other than Rey force grabbing the saber and the Jedi meditation, it was an injured guy fighting someone who wasn't polished.

I wouldn't like to place it in a list but it is definitely right up there. The contrast of the snow and lightsabers, the brutality and emotion. So fucking good. And nobody died. This is good.

I really think Duel of Fates will appear in 8 or 9 episode when Kylo will be a real Sith and Rey a great Jedi.

Good music are for the 4 finals gym leaders. Not the ratata vs roucool.

Darth Maul was the only worthwhile thing to come out of TPM. They had to retcon his death to bring him back for the animated series he was so badass.

Rank for fights:

TPM
TFA
ROTJ
TESB
ROTS
ANH
AOTC

1. RotJ - Amazingly dramatic, with the music completing it
2. ESB - Really tense, you can sense how Luke is totally out of his league.
3. TFA - Good balance of everything, has stakes
4. ANH - It's the classic despite being very wooden

Far below them, all the prequel fights. Flippy Yoda was a bad joke, Emperor vs Windu was like comedy, Dooku was just a boring non-entity, Grievous is the avatar of all that is wrong with green screen Star Wars. Maul fight had some good moves but it was overlong, nonsensical, and let's face it, about 3 people who don't know each other fighting for no good reason. The Sith fight could've been salvaged with a better ending and cutting out like two thirds of the platforming.

At least the PT fights work great as Auralnauts dance numbers.

edit: Obi-Wan vs Jango was actually decent, but clearly not so memorable as I didn't even remember it at first.

Empire > Jedi >= TFA

TFA's duel is less emotionally meaningful, but the sound design and special effects are god tier. Tons of bass when Finn engages his saber, and the sounds of it clashing with Ren's were heavy as fuck in the theater. Also loved the illuminating effects of the sabers, the sparks, and the environment getting chopped up. So much energy and excitement. I can't wait to see it again.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
I disliked the part where Rey just closes her eyes while Kylo patiently waits for her to power up, and then she suddenly goes from holding her own to kicking his ass. It didn't feel earned.
And Luke suddenly making a one-in-a-million shot after turning off his targeting computer, despite no Jedi training in any sort of piloting or torpedo shooting, was earned?

It's the Force, the whole point is that you tap into it and you can do bullshit you couldn't normally.

Best SW duel right here:

(Kylo vs. Rey & Finn is possibly #3 behind Empire and Jedi, but Phantom Menace and Sith's final duels are also very good.)

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Because we feel in OT and NT (New Trilogy? :p) that they really have swords...not like in the PT where it's like sticks not heavy.
Exactly, or that if they hadn't parried that they would've been killed.

General Grievous goes from single-handedly destroying 7 Jedi at once (3 of which were Masters) in the first cartoon to not even being able to handle Ahsoka in the second cartoon... >_>
Well considering the context, he handled 7 exhausted Jedi. Ahsoka every time she fights him spends most of the fights running away and or parrying.
His feats were easier to animate in 2D.

Kylo vs Finn had tension because you didn't know which way they were going to go because it was clear at that point he didn't have force powers and Kylo was a dead man walking after what Chewie did to him and was bleeding all over the place. As soon as Rey got the lightsaber there was no way she wasn't winning that fight. I don't see how anyone can honestly say they didn't expect that outcome. There was no tension at all in that fight. Had they not had the Finn fight first it might have been another story.
The tension was in just how unrefined the fight was and how much she was losing. The cinematography was so on point. The actors nailed the emotion as well.

Drama:RotJ

Dance:TPM

Yeah, I'd say this is a pretty good breakdown. I'm sure the new trilogy will achieve similar levels of tension and drama in the coming instalments

Best SW duel right here:

So what tactical advantage do you get by doing sick sideflips during a swordfight... Sigh, what were they thinking??

Pretty low down. I'm honestly surprised people thought it was so good. The stop in the middle for Rey to concentrate was almost comical. The fight would've been MUCH better if it had started as it did (which was good), but the earthquake/ground split had interrupted them before it had "finished" so that there was no clear winner. You'd have had Rey holding her own, unlike Finn, without Ren losing or the nonsense force epiphany moment

TFA > RotJ > ESB.

I loved everything about Rey's fight with Ren. Everything felt like it had weight with a sense you being right there. Tense, scary, empowering, heavy...and girl power.

Lots of girl power.

Man, Adam Driver gave such a good performance all around, but especially in the duel. Kylo feels exactly like what he is: an unstable but potent threat whose own issues are bleeding through (and out.) The moment when he tries to turn Rey... That could have easily been cheesy and I thought it was perfect. Aside from that, his physical mannerisms and attitude were on-point. I really think his performance in the following films is going to be phenomenal.

He's what we wanted for Anakin in ep 3..

"Sam, in this shot just walk forward and swing your lightsaber around. We're going to CGI Ian doing some neat flips around the room."

Maybe Palps was trying to get higher ground but couldn't quite find anything high enough.

5/7. Revenge of the Sith Annie vs Obi was cool.

Kylo Ren vs Finn and Rey didn't visually look powerful. I would think they would be stronger than casually swinging light sabers. Needed more force powers. The OT gets away with it because of the time it was produced but it's 2015 where you can make laser sword fights with space wizards more interesting and dynamic.

This is not the best gif yet. I saw it last night by a gaffer.
That move when Kylo block Rey's lightsaber...and push it (but STILL BLOCK!) to her like the pure good side in the world and the most dark thing in the world encounter !

THIS fight was really bad vs good, light vs dark.... DAY VS NIGHT!

IMO, it's Empire and Jedi (not counting Boba Fett's death), then The Force Awakens (which is high praise, because damn JJ, you did a great job with this movie), then a big gap before the prequel trilogy.

this fight was cool as shit

Qui Gon dying in the Phantom Menace didn't even change the fight. Means Qui Gon didn't matter. But he was a duplicate of Obi Wan, so Obi Wan didn't matter either. I doubt Darth Maul even mattered in that fight. Just put one-to-three of these characters on the screen and have them dance.

The Auralnauts parody series actually beats the prequel fights with their recontextualized epic dance battles.

1. Rey vs. Kylo, TFA
2. Luke vs. Vader, ESB
3. Luke vs. Vader / Emperor, RotJ
4. Obi-Wan vs. Vader, SW
5. Obi-Wan / Qui-Gon vs. Maul, TPM
6. Obi-Wan vs. Anakin, RotS
7-???. Everything else in the prequels

Dead

well not really...yet
Hmmm tough

I think...

1. Luke vs Vader ROTJ
2. Luke vs Vader ESB
3. Obi-Wan and Qui Gon vs Darth Maul TPM
4. Rey and Finn vs Kylo Ren TFA
5. Anakin vs Obi-Wan ROTS
6. Obi-Wan vs Vader ANH
7. Whatever it was in AOTC

Every single Clone Wars video or gif I've ever seen just looks like the worst garbage ever. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

But yeah, for me, it's V > VI > VII > IV. Nothing else is worth discussing.

I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a tactical advantage but a cheap and dull way to visually show how powerful Jedi and Sith are. Would I be afraid if Kylo Ren came at me with a light saber? A little. If Anakin from PT came at me I'd be terrified because there's not much I can do against that stupid craziness.
