Also, goddamn @ The Revenant costing $135 million. Even with Leo in the lead, they are going to have a hell of a time recouping that for such an allegedly violent and long film.

Nah, critics are simply happy the film wasn't trash. Hell, Jurassic World has a great metacritic rating and I also thought that film was merely decent. JJ just remade ANH but inserted his constant ADHD into all of the cinematography and writing.

It's a greatest hits of the original trilogy more than a remake of ANH.

I seem to be in the group that didn't have a problem with that. Star Wars has always been characters over story for me and I love the new characters.

I wonder what the % of Avatar dropped in it's second weekend.

38% isn't nearly as high as most movies, but it still feels higher than I expected. The theater I was at yesterday was still packed, we preordered tickets and still had six seats to choose from with 4 people. And others were being turned away from selling out still.

With Oscar buzz going for that film, I think it might save it.

Avatar didn't drop, afaik. It actually gained some

It actually fell 25 percent considering the outrageous 54 million Thursday previews added to 193 million made the movie 248 million.

how does daddy's home make 38mil? i guess people will never get tired of will ferrell playing the same man child he does in every movie.

It's the only family focused movie to see with the family over for Christmas. Latinos and white people still love Will Ferrell.

Jurassic World has a 59 Metacritic rating. TFA has a 81. Pretty significant difference.

There are two wrongs and injustices in the world
1) that Jurassic did the business it did
2) that Avatar has the all time record

I pray The force wipes both from history for good.

I think you might mean Rotten Tomatoes, considering JW has a 59% on Metacritic, which isn't exactly great.

Hell technically RT's score for it isn't super amazing either, only at about 71%, which does basically mean "merely decent" as you put it.

Wow, with all that garbage that's out right now, Star Wars should have a pretty comfortable week coming up.

Besides The Revenant and Hateful Eight, I don't think there's anything else I'd want to see this week.

Including the revenue from a re-release of Avatar featuring extended footage, Avatar grossed $760,507,625 in the U.S. and Canada, and $2,027,457,462 in other territories for a worldwide total of $2,787,965,087
Jesus.

I have doubts about Star Wars managing to do what Avatar did to the other territories.

Eh, I guess it must have changed from when I was looking at it around the time of the movie's release.

Wait, what? He's not? Why?

I think it's for the best, honestly.

Remember that the OT wasn't entirely directed by George with an iron fist like the prequels were. The OT was directed by a different guy each film.

A lot of people complain that Abrams relies too much on references and stuff from other films so it's probably for the better they have another director come in with some more originality.

So, there goes the idea that you can't release huge hits in December. How many 'slow' months does that leave?

Any Disney billionaire reading GAF please PM me and I will gladly give you my paypal. It's the only way I'll care.

Looking at all this numbers, its crazy how Titanic was so enormous. Will we ever see something as big? (i don't mention others cause i wasn't born)

Jurassic World is 71% on RT, that's quite a far cry from 95%. On Metacritic JW is on 59% whilst TFA is on 81%. Again, a marked difference.

And TFA really isn't a remake of ANH. I think that belief is rudimentary and wholly misplaced. It has thematic similarities, homages perhaps, but it's still a very different movie with greatly differing characters, narrative, overall sense of pacing and spectacle.
