Media Create Sales: Week 52, 2015 (Dec 21 - Dec 27)

For Super Mario Maker, the most logical step in the short term is indeed a handheld version, hopefully compatible with most existing levels (though I'd expect those with an insane amount of enemies to not compatible... which wouldn't be much of loss given how most of them "enemies bullet hell" levels are usually pretty crappy).

They could have each 4DS come with Super Mario Maker lite, some sort of "premium" demo with a limited number of elements (think vanilla SMM), and limited sharing abilities. Full version available at retail or eShop.

On the "long term" an updated version each gen with all the elements of the latest 2D Mario games is a possible way to go.

Another franchise getting the Maker treatment is definitely possible, but I don't think there's any other franchise with the wide appeal which allowed SMM to be popular in the first place.

This idea would be huge for Mario Maker, IMO.

I would like to see them go in a "Nintendo Maker" direction. Retain the gameplay base of Mario, but expand the 'costumes' idea to become selectable characters and add tilesets based on other franchises, with corresponding music and enemy changes. Some small tweaks could be made depending on the selected character as well (Samus would be able to shoot, Link to swing his sword, etc.). But the base gameplay would still be Mario.

I would never have thought that SMM can get close to MK8 sales let alone beat it launch aligned. One of the biggest surprise hits of 2015 together with Splatoon.

It's laughable considering the almost infinite possibilities the team has in terms of characters. I can see why Persona 4 Arena has a 13-14 characters roster - the choice is limited per se. Pokkén could already start with a sizeable roster. I don't know, maybe I'm spoiled because I played games like Tekken 6. Or perhaps I just read Wikipedia and Smash news, who knows!

Tekken 6 had a bunch of games' rosters to build off of, Pokken does not. Every character in Pokken must be built from the ground up and that takes time and money. If Pokken is successful it will eventually get to that 40-50 character range, it'll just take a handful of games like pretty much every fighter does.
You can't just throw characters into a fighting game, they have to be meticulously planed and balanced with the rest of the cast.

I didn't realize that at all. could it be because of a closer release to the Xmas weeks?

Mario Kart 8 Christmas boost wasn't that good. Well, the truth is that Wii U Christmas 2014 was a completely joke in Japan.

Yep, I wonder why. I mean: it's not that MK or Smash didn't work well, they are/have been successfull games, and this year the bundles prices were even higher.
Could it be that both MK and Smash are/were available also/first on the 3DS, so fewer people were pushed to buy the (expensive) console/hw for those games, while Splatoon and SMM are exclusive to the hardware (and justify/show also a good use of the console functionality, between gamepad and online)?

Yup, of course. Indeed, is not a surprised that Mario Maker has surpassed Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 during christmas.

Btw, i can see Mario Maker outsell Mario Kart 8 lifetime in Japan.

Mario Kart 8 has sold over 1.10 million at retail a long time ago ( 1.20 million now?), including digital 1.30m maybe? It will sell others copies, but i think 1.50m at max, probabily 1.40m.

Mario Maker should sell very similar.

Week 53 will include sales for kids with New Year's money?

This week's predictions, while in bold last weeks numbers:

YSO predictions

Week 53, 2015 (Dec 28 - Jan 3)

01. [3DS] Monster Hunter X < 155k (average 130k) 190.522
02. [3DS] Monster Strike < 130k (average 110k) 169.961
03. [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch Busters < 100k (average 85k)120.303

So based on the predicted drop off at least for the top sellers this week could see 20-30% drop - provided YSO prediction are correct. With the retailer numbers I expect Splatoon/SMM to see a smaller decline. Splatoon no longer having enough bundles assures high sw sales while SMM bundle will make up the majority of Wii U hardware.

If I'm not mistaken it wouldn't be impossible for a new portable to have a better CPU than the Wii U, especially with the big jump from 3DS to N3DS and Miyamoto emphasising the need for a stronger CPU.

A stronger CPU would be a big benefit for cross development with a console too.

The WiiU's CPU is such a crippling limiter on an old production node (on top of the WiiU's limited RAM and bandwidth) that outspeccing it isn't the hard part for a handheld, even with low TDP considerations (consider the already low TDP on the WiiU). It'd just be a question of heat dispersal but the recent fanless M3s from Intel give you a good idea of what you can put inside a mobile platform while powering something the size of a Surface Pro 4 at an enormous resolution of 2,736 x 1,824p. Scaling down with an A52/A57 or A72 to a handheld running at 540/720p and playing par with the WiiU (resolution relative performance, of course) won't be hard. It just may be costly depending on what Nintendo intends to do with the NX.

The NX is going to be a WiiU duct taped to a Vita.

damn! these comparisons really put SMM in perspective. it's doing greatly in Japan (for being a Wii U exclusive game)

What does that mean? Some* WiiU exclusive games are and seemingly will continue to dominate the console space in Japan for, potentially, the entire generation. These games are selling (very) well for the modern Japanese console space irregardless of platform or platforms.

Heck, they are selling well globally.

PSX may have had an unofficial price drop in June (to coincide with Saturn's), which wasn't made officlal until 7/21. I have data that shows a huge boost in sales the week of 6/5 [could be off a week] that lasted until the end of summer.
gr5vPUC.png

This data comes from a graph posted on an import site from the late-90s, I cant find that site anymore (anyone remember?). I had to pixel count the graph to repiicate it myself.

I never trust random graphs or numbers without cofirming the source. If there was an unofficial price drop so many weeks before the official it's not showed at famitsu hw and unfortunately weekly top 30 for this period from famitsu are missing.

Splatoon (and Mario Maker lesser) continue to play the game of how long they'll keep supporting alone Wii U.

First weeks of 2016 will tell.

Yep; as I've said a few weeks ago, the test will be during early 2016. Splatoon seems to have become so popular that might sustain Wii U hw sales at least until early February.

Wii U sales first week of the year ( second to be fair, but since this was a 53 weeks month, this is the right comparation)

2013 - 20,715
2014 - 14,020
2015 - 10,803
2016 - ?

What we can expect from 2016?

I say 18,000.

Are we comparing week 53 to Week 1 or Week 1 to Week 1? I am a bit confused. If the former, double your number.

Mario Maker has had consistent TV ads and large displays in every department store in the country for months. Nintendo really threw their weight behind the game to make it happen for the holidays.

Analysts believe, and rightfully so, that Nintendo's Full Year results will be lower than anticipated from management.

Bloomberg report http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-01-06/nintendo-drops-in-tokyo-after-smbc-nikko-cuts-recommendation

Nintendo's stock is almost where its at prior to the Dena announcement, quite a fall.

Seems expected for what is a transition year, both due to unforeseen circumstances as well as the natural end-of-hardware-cycle period. 2016 will give us a very clear idea of whether Nintendo will be going upwards or further downwards in the future depending on the success of their DeNA partnership this year as well as the hardware announcements they will be making.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

Yup it does but like the report mentioned, I don't think one will see the mobile venture be fruitful until later on - NX and their Universal partnership are what interest me much more and a lot is riding on both announcements/clarifications.

The strong successes of this year, especially the outright perfect marketing, make me more hopeful than not.

Their marketing (and just topical game design) has been on point in across the globe with those said key games.

Aside from Splatoon what strong successes Nintendo has had worldwide this year? Going by November NPD thread at least in US they are going to have one of their worst holiday seasons since forever in terms of hw and sw sold.

Majora's Mask 3D, Splatoon, and Mario Maker are probably the main 3. Capcom had MH4U ride the new 3DS launch to do very well in the US.

There's plenty of examples but the sparsity of the year hitting November's performance and the weak year-end results is more emblematic of the fact that we're in the middle of a transition cycle with two platforms winding down, and one already nearly irrelevant.

What I was referring to was the marketing surrounding Splatoon, SMM, and the on-going excellent digital successes of their Smash DLC (the latter marketed in a different but very effective way, mind). The launch of the N3DS in the States went over very strongly with MH4U and MM3DS doing very well. All of these were handled with excellent marketing, Splatoon and SMM especially so (in general, I'd say Nintendo's ability to market has greatly improved over the last few years). The fact that the rest of the year died in terms of releases was, as I said, a different problem.

HHD wasn't so much marketed as it was simply a decent-to-good animal crossing game.

So don't conflate two different things. Look to what they actually released and put their might behind. Splatoon and SMM have, I would say, considerably better and more poignant (and successful) marketing behind them than Smash or MK8 from last year. I honestly don't think Nintendo of two years ago would have known what to do with Splatoon.

There's DLC stuff for Smash and Kart.

Don't think we ever got numbers on how much the DLC has made, but I wouldn't be surprised if DLC from those two games made more than some recent titles ha.

Famitsu just uploaded a little recap for 2015 on their site, as 2015 is already over for them.

Pretty sure I'm reading this part wrong, ha ha, but it says that total revenue by dedicated gaming devices was of 32.097b Yen (over $270m), it says 3209.7億円, the 億 stands for a hundred million, but I'm not sure how to use it, so it could also be 320.97b Yen (over $2.7b dollars) pick which ever is more realistic.

Apart from that some comparisons to 2014, in terms or revenue.

For 2014 this is between 30/12/2013 and 28/12/2014 and for 2015 is between 29/12/2014 and 27/12/2015, 52 weeks for both. Numbers are in millions of yen.

In 2014 total revenue was of 3685.5, from which 1421.5 was hardware and 2264 was software.
In 2015 total revenue was of 3209.7, from which 1300.5 was hardware and 1909.1 was software.

So as a whole results from 2014 are down 8.5%, 15.7% and 12.9% for hardware, software and all respectively.

Also full year results for hardware.
Nintendo 3DS: 2.189.900 (LTD: 20.036.956)
PlayStation Vita: 959.342 (LTD: 4.382.417)
Wii U: 820.304 (LTD: 2.943.587)
PlayStation 4: 1.205.163 (LTD: 2.130.733)
PlayStation 3: 188.207 (LTD: 10.206.741)
Xbox One: 18.093 (LTD: 64.051)

Needless tosay, for 3DS and PSV that's combining all SKUs.

Finally, Top 10 Software.

 1. [3DS] Monster Hunter X: 2.441.977
 2. [3DS] Yokai Watch Busters: White Dog Squad / Red Cat Team: 1.965.202

 7. [3DS] Monster Strike: 636.709
 8. [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Shinuchi: 625.223

Yup, that's sadly true. Not only, if we talk about hardware, this is the worse November in USA since... ALWAYS.

Those are the November sales from all Nintendo System combined in USA. ( Including GBA, GC, DS, Wii, 3DS, WIU, i don't have numbers for N64 or before that)

2002 - 1.751.000
2003 - 2.077.000
2004 - 1.467.000
2005 - 1.571.000

Seriusly, the Wii alone in 2008 has sold over 2 million in November. This year, the combined sales of 3DS and Wii U are < 600k...

2015 was a important year for Nintendo, with some nice surprise (Splatoon/Mario Maker succes in primis), and some brutal news...

Let's hope for a better 2016.

Not only are Splatoon and Super Mario Maker exciting and innovative titles that have charmed the Nintendo pajamas off everyone, but they are also the benefactors of that genius DLC support Nintendo first discovered with Mario Kart 8.

But those are looking like the top three selling Wii U first-party titles of this generation I guess. Splatoon. Super Mario Maker. Mario Kart 8. Sadly, I don't see any other future title coming close to the million club.

Also Rhythm Tengoku still going strong!

HHD wasn't so much marketed as it was simply a decent-to-good animal crossing game.

Honestly I can't find any depth whatsoever in that game. My wife put hundreds of hours into New Leaf but she played HHD once for like two hours but got bored and said the game is incredibly simple. You get a theme and then items for that theme but you can't lose in that game no matter what you do and it's always the same thing over and over.

Thank God for Splatoon and Mario Maker because, recently, it feels almost like Nintendo at its worst, its most cynical. Their decisions make very little sense. The 3DS is lucky to have such strong third-party support in Japan because I fear the NX is going to tank in the West after how disastrous Nintendo's handling of the second half of its life has been. I really hope they have an ace in their sleeve for 2016. Japan should be fine but it'd be nice to not see another decline. I enjoyed the 3DS' beast mode days.

This is a pretty good example of what I was talking about a few years back.

In an ideal world, Nintendo wanted to have their new handheld out by 2015 because of Western decay. Mind, I don't think they actually had a super feasible path to doing so given how their software was stacked internally, but they're in overtime at this point and experiencing continued painful brand erosion.
