NPD Sales Results for December 2015 [Up1: Super Mario Maker]

Losing 90 million potential costumers is troubling. Unless you think the industry consolidating even more and being even more focused on fewer but bigger than ever titles by a handful of companies is healthy. It may be sustainable for a good while catering to the core but what the industry thrives on is the casuals.

Edit: inb4 someone twists this post as "consoles are doomed"

We don't actually know how many customers are lost but it's definitely not 90 mil. That's assuming all of those 90 million Wiis were owned by people who didn't own other consoles as well, which is highly likely untrue.

Just to add, XB1 is at 85k in Spain as of June 2015 and is naturally lower in Italy, to round up the Tier 1 countries that provide most sales

The only 20m XB1 figure that makes sense to me is shipped.
Russia, China, India. All with a population of 100mil+

I've never seen any stats from those markets.

*Giggles*

If you're going to use total population as a metric for potential console sales then how about all of those highly populated countries in Central Africa? Surely there's a few XBOnes sprinkled around Amish communities too.

That's not optimist.

It sold 290,000 in 2014.

Let's say it sold the same in 2015 ( even if most likely was up YOY ), this should mean 706,000 LT by end of December 2015.

700,000 looks realistic / pecsimist.
UK is down YoY with crazy deals this year... It is not impossible to France be down too.

Excellent numbers. A lot of happy kids (and adults) on Christmas!

Tomb Raider numbers are really low and I think that MS guy lied about the sold-through like he always lied about 360 sales and others stuffs.

Over 1m is shipped WW.

I think they sold-through 1m worldwide. Yes, it's very odd that they can sell 1m when all sales numbers indicate that the game has barely crossed 500k in physical units. However, physical sales =/= digital sales. If digital accounts for 90% of all sales, then there's nothing odd about the game being well over a million copies sold.

The same applies to Forza. All physical sales indicate that the game is a big commercial failure, but if digital sales are 90%, then the game is well over a million.

Mortal Kombat X outsold The Witcher 3 for the full year? Goddamn, wasn't expecting that.
Not surprising. Beloved franchise vs 1st big push for a eastern European RPG IP.

Xbox One is the best place for gamers and the only console that has all top 10 best-selling titles of this generation that launched in 2015

Ahhh of course, the fabled 1% how could I forget?/s

Those countries, especially India and China are not providing meaningful numbers to anything my friend.

Look at the 2015 Top 10
Take out GTA V, Minecraft, and COD AW since those came out in 2014
Add whatever the next 3 games are (Halo 5 is probably #11, 12, or 13 along with something like The Witcher 3 or Just Dance or whatever)

Then that statement is true.

Yep.

Nigeria, Pakistan, Indonesia. All with 100m+ populations. As long as nobody can produce numbers then we must assume the Xbox One is doing great in those markets.

Thanks mate.

Xbox WW should be around 20m then.

Not bad.

Let's do some guesstimate, since we do know more or less exact numbers for both consoles in US, UK, Japaan and China (in millions, as of 31/12/2015):
PS4: 12.4 + 3.2 + 2.3 + 0.26 = 18.16
Xbone: 11.1 + 2.3 + 0.06 + 0.24 = 13.70

So ROTW PS4 sold-through numbers are:
35.9 - 18.16 = 17.74

We also know that in Europe sales ratio is 3.5 : 1 and that's in the countries where Xbone sells the most, so if we assume a 4 : 1 for rotw (being very generous to the Xbone) we have:
17.74 / 4 = 4.43
This puts Xbone at 18.13 millions WW, and that's with very optimistic numbers for rotw in my opinion, so I realistically expect it to be < 18m WW.
Please someone correct me if I'm far off somewhere with those numbers.

Yeah even with the PS3/360 numbers it's not customers, a lot of people bought multiple replacements/upgrades over the years. All we have is unit sales numbers, not sure have many estimates on the size of the customer base. Perhaps software sales are a more important metric if you want to work out customer base but we don't really have those.

I've never seen any stats from those markets.

The most successful console in India is the PS2.

How much did PS2 sell in India over the 13-15 years it was in the Indian market?

Less than 1 million.

Can I see? I've not seen any numbers from these places.

And when pray tell, do Microsoft give us numbers since they are in 2nd place?

You'd be hard pressed to even find PS4 numbers for those countries.
My main point was that using population as an indicator for how well XB1 is performing is a foolish exercise.

Secondly, those countries have never been historically big console sales contributors (even if this is rising ever so slightly) so the inquisition is moot anyways.

If you came to me with places like Suadi Arabia, Singapore or Japan, you'd have a higher leg to stand on.

It's interesting that Mortal Kombat X was 9th on the year's best selling games but Arkham Knight was nowhere to be seen. Were the sales really that hampered by the PC debacle or was it seen as something of a disappointment across the board?

Also did Warner Bros finish the year as the number one publisher? If they did that is quite a coup for them.

Arkham Knight had a PS4 bundle is probably the main reason.

What's Russia like?

Japan?! How many does it sell there? Like 4 a week?

PS4 is a fad too?

No because Sony have historical data across a number of different consoles of selling huge numbers.

Wii was a fad due to the nature of who adopted it, mums, grandparents, families etc.

It was the "in" thing for awhile, the "in" thing only lasts for awhile before the next thing comes along.

Accept it, its fact. Against the data of Nintendo home console sales it was an anomaly, the Wii U sits closer to the established trend, a slowly diminishing home console market for Nintendo.

You are right, that's not being optimistic, that's called being French and seeing the X1s pile up in our stores. I live in one of the biggest city in France and I can tell you that there is a very little chance that X1 is up YoY. Very slim (shady) chances.

That's because there's nothing to see. Lifetime console sales in these markets are usually lower than one holiday month in the US.

People often refer the Wii as an "anomaly", but holy crap that graph is something else indeed...

In all fairness, WiiU is now above 13 million units. Still, though. Having said that, Wii sales are above 100 million right now, so don't read too much into that graph. Main message ("anomaly") stays untouched, though.

Why not? Rest is 24 million for PS4, 9 million would put it at a 2.7:1 ratio. Seems plausible and is in line with sales from the first year.

The US ratio between ps4 and xbone cannot be extrapolated to the rest of the world because xbone is getting smoked everywhere outside of the US and the UK.

Can I see? I've not seen any numbers from these places.

At the end of last year PS4 and Xbox One sold more than 500k consoles via official channels in China, over 400k of them are PS4s. Let that number sink in. Also the China numbers you get do not account for grey market retailers which makes up the vast majority of console sales in China.

Well it's not so hard to figure out, isn't it? Get rid of the annoying Forerunner enemies, return to classic Halo enemies, make Masterchief the main protagonist for more than 15 % of the game, stop that 60 fps nonsense and instead make the graphics meaningful, cut the crap with multiplayer being at the center of all development when everybody plays CoD anyway or make the multiplayer exactly like CoD, make campaigns that can't be beaten in 2 hours.

Agree on the SP but not so much the MP.

Personally, if I was "in charge" of Halo I'd look to the following (I agree in some elements drastic) actions:

  • Make MC central to SP - as in you play as him - like it or not he's the star. Don't sideline him from SP
  • Dump much of the EU focus, other squads and dumb backstory with Humans (I know this is popular with a small niche who read/consume EU stuff but I firmly believe majority want to feel like a super solider with minimal angst exploring deep space and fighting evil aliens. The EU and core plot is now way to human/Earth centric and too focused on Spartans backstory)
  • More MC away from Earth in SP and switch to a new narrative that feels fresh throughout with fully new enemies/race
  • Make SP 30fps and regain old SP balance of looking "nice enough" with some really big combat arenas and add split screen coop back too
  • Keep MP 60fps and continue focus on even playing field. Deliver mix of "classic" and "current" modes. Classic would strip out jetpacks, etc. and deliver Halo2/3 style MP in similar maps

Work PR and marketing to get message out on how good Halo 6 is and how much it recaptures original vibe of Halo/2/3.

Speaking on the Windows Weekly podcast, Foley estimates that “around 18 million” Xbox Ones are in consumers’ hands.

Actually they can. But it's very unlikely, some consoles have forcefully been bought by cavemen (why would you live there (in a cave) ??).

The low Tomb raider sales are quite shocking. Makes me think even with a day 1 PS4 release the sales would still be well below the previous title's sales.

Three things hurt TR, all of which "may" have been avoidable without the deal:

  • launch timing - I'm assuming without the deal and MS publishing SE could have moved the date more easily to avoid F4, CoD and BF. The launch timing really killed the title IMHO
  • better bundles with better priced console versions and more broadly available - again I'm assuming without the deal limiting it to the BB 1TB bundle the title would have seen better boost from bundles
  • day/date launch all platforms - obvious but launching on 5 platforms and platforms that have bigger install base, particularly in EU where TR sees a big chunk of sales, would have delivered much better results in total

So yeah the deal for me and how it locked them into a bad launch window and locked out a lot of sales outside US (and inside too) in terms of lack of availability on best selling platforms and lack of reach outside US.

Align it with the sales of its predecessors and you'll have your answer. Maybe.

Concerning Nintendo..

2939398-nintendo+unit+sales.jpg

NX (home console) will be struggling to get an 8-digit life-time sales...

Holy shit. Never saw it THAT clear. Nintendo are looking at a very dark future hu? No wonder why the "Nintendo goes third party soon" discussions won't stop. NX better blows everyone away and catches the casuals asap. They can't rest on their handhelds forever or can they?

Hello, Neo GAF forums.

I apologize that I have not been an active member of these video game boards, but alas, real life calls.

Would anyone on these forums care about precise hardware numbers for December 2015? Because I am willing to provide them to Neo GAF this month as a courtesy if you want.

Any chance for hardware LTD in Canada? There's absolutely no reporting on this, apart from a pretty useless "up x% vs PS3+360" ages ago.
