It's not character switching but the player having the control over other characters using unique abilities. You can see on the lower left of the screen. When the player chooses for Prompto to use Flash Bomb, the camera switchs to Prompto.

It just feels silly considering what was discussed around Stella and Regis.

It wasn't Luna whom Noctic met during his childhood. It was both Stella and Luna. During whatever ordeal that happened, Noctis died, Luna used her powers to transfer Stella's soul into Noctis' body.
That's why Luna is waiting. For Stella to come back. Midway during the game Luna and Noctis met meets. They perform the great Eidolon Grand Spell and Stella gets her body back while Luna is sacrificed. You get to romance Prompto, Gladiolus and Ignis for the rest of the game.

When the game ends, you get a teaser trailer about the soul of the real Noctis and dead Luna in a dark world not unlike XIII's Valhalla. FF XV-2 will be about the two discovering the real truth about the Eidolons and their legends, and the journey to travel through the underworld to find Etro so that Etro can take her rightful place and revive Noctis and Luna.
You will capture lesser Eidolons and use them as party members.

As amazing as all of this is I do have to say it's a disappointment that the story set-up sounds like literally the exact same thing as Type-0.
He's been getting more applause when bringing back the older Versus 13 look/gameplay mechanics that we're spoken of/showed in very early builds and game footage.
The most notable changes he's done was polishing everything out, which is sort of expected.
Everyone has doubts about Luna and her relevance. She still looks like a flat character and people really want a more compelling fighter/magic user/Opposing Force like Stella was.
If a trailer with Luna using magic and fighting/beating the crap out of Noctis is ever shown. Then I'll be happy with her character.
Dammit guys but points for being accurate.
