These prices are just out of control at this point.

I'm gonna have to slow down. $29 for a single LP and with no appreciable difference in packaging is not reasonable, full stop.

Not it was my mistake due to their poor updating. They initially only had the deluxe three-pack up there, which costs $80. Basically you get three of the same record in each variant color.

A few minutes later they added the individual release variants. Those were of sane price, and marked at $28.99. The Mega Man variant was sold out when I realized this so I missed out and had to settle for the Cut Man variant. Really shitty because they published the page 20-ish minutes later than they the time they announced it would go on sale, and then on top of that they staggered the individual product pages from going live. Confused the hell out of me, made me create an order I didn't want, and made me waste a lot of time.
Still looks available from here if you want to cancel to get the variant you want. Or maybe shoot them an email?

Yeah it must have been an initial publishing glitch when the pages went live. I have three order with them now and asked them to cancel two of them. What a mess.

The MM2 tracks were always there (also on the picture disc) - it's MM3 tracks that are missing. The tracklist is identical to the picture disc as far as I can tell.

D'oh. Yeah you're right, sorry. Slipped my mind.

Does iam8bit send tracking info when they ship? Still haven't received my Hotline Miami 2, or gotten an email with tracking info, so I'm hoping its at least shipped by now.

Also my Axiom Verge has been sitting in Brooklyn for 4 days now. "Shipping Label Created" was the last update from the 24th. The hell man

I am passing on Mega Man... Shipping to Europe is 25$
It's just too much for me to feel comfortable and I could not enjoy listening to it.

Surprised that limited edition isn't sold at yet if there's only 100 of the. Don't really get the point since it's just 3 copies of the same album, but I expected scalpers to be all over anything with "limited" attached to it.

Any way, got a normal version ordered. Can't wait. Been waiting forever for the non-picture release.

...hang on, really? I thought the whole point was that it was spread out.

Agreed. I feel like these boutique vinyl companies are starting to gouge consumers and strike while the iron is hot. They are probably looking at retailers like Urban Outfitters, and if they can charge $30 for some random "classic" vinyl, why can't we?

It's a shame, because there's some really cool things happening in the market. Vinyl releases that aren't even out on CD or digital, like Mondo's Star Trek II 2LP or Ship to Shore's Martin releases. But when Data Disc tries to sell a partial Shenmue soundtrack for twenty pounds, or some of these double LPs like Mother and Mother 2 for $40 (hell, I would get LASERDISC MOVIES at that price!), you gotta think this whole vinyl resurgence is just a bubble waiting to burst.

The page for the $80 version shows the exact same Side A and Side B as the $28 versions, and that's it. So, seems like it's just all three color variants for a slight discount. Seems like a pretty unappealing thing.

Wow, that's ridiculous. I should've read the fine print I suppose, but I've literally never come across such a stupid "bundle." I'm going to cancel if I can.

I agree. I can understand charging a little more just because the license fees can be hefty depending on the game, but with sites like iam8bit you get hit with triple-whammies like sight-unseen preorders, expensive base prices, and absurd shipping.

It's always going to be a niche bubble but I don't want it to get run into the ground quite this fast. This Megaman thing is stupid too. Three of the same album? Why?

Jeremy Parish put up a review of the axiom verge LP and was not impressed by the quality of the packaging. Reading that same sentiment here kinda makes me second guess what il be getting with the mother 2 record.

As someone who Kickstarted the first one: the sound itself is amazing and the packaging is extremely heavyweight, so hopefully 2 follows suit.

I assume those of us buying video game vinyl are a minority of the already minor group of people buying vinyl, so I doubt these companies seeing how far they can push it on this front will hurt the whole resurgence.

Thought I'd take a look at the last 12 months or so of purchases on Amazon:

  • Megadeth Dystopia - $20
  • Foo Fighters Sonic Highways - $17
  • Iron Maiden Book of Souls (3 LP) - $32
  • Adele 25 - $23
  • Goo Goo Dolls Dizzy Up the Girl - $19
  • Halo 5 (2 LP) - $23
  • Breaking Benjamin Dark Before Dawn - $18
Those are all pretty damn acceptable prices. It's laughable to see that that super nice 3 LP Maiden set cost as much as the single Mega Man LP after shipping. It's definitely time to start being far more selective about video game vinyl given these prices.

I buy a lot of vinyl and my pricing expectations are around $18 for DIY indie metal/punk labels where selling 500 is a reasonable expectation, $25 for low press run avant/weird vinyl, and around $30-35 if the label isn't based in the USA. Double Lps tend to add $6-10.

The quality of the packaging is low-tier, throwaway vinyl release to be honest. I posted about it on the last page.

I do like Happ's text on the print-out, but from the main sleeve to the regular-ass paper inner sleeve that's not even anti-static, it's a bummer that they didn't spend the extra couple of bucks to make it feel premium.

There aren't gigantic licensing costs with this release, there was zero new art produced... Just why?

I love the game and the music, by the way. I don't want to knock either of those.

But most of those, when reaching for the $25 tier, go the extra mile and add a Stoughton Gatefold, some extra packaging effort, or something of the sort. The purpose of buying vinyl and supporting the physical format (well, at least for me) is about the full experience and the way it's presented.

Look at Southern Lord. They are not cheap, but their releases always, ALWAYS feel fair. Monolith & Dimensions was a little more expensive, but the packaging was fantastic. Same thing for some of Earth's releases. When they do release something more low-key, the price reflects that. Even the latest Sunn O))), being a single LP, still had thoughtful gatefold packaging and came in at $18 instead of $25.

It's a super-boutique industry that lives on the goodwill and excitement of the customers. I think the videogame side of it grew incredibly quick over the past 6-12 months and also VERY quickly is converging to making a quick buck while the iron is hot. I don't like it.

As I'm sure we all know, for a long time video game music on vinyl was a very rare thing. That's becoming less and less the case, and I hope prices will settle as a result. I fear they'll keep doing it as long as they can get away with this pricing, though.

And ultimately that's the right economic answer, so I can't push it too hard :p

I just feel like if even I am starting to feel the burn (I've been going vinyl crazy for almost a decade now), there has to be some overpushing going on here. I dunno, we'll see where it goes.

Maybe it's just my personal preferences, but I don't think enough attention is being given to careful pricing, or to make sure the pricing matches the packaging.

Some examples of "expensive" vinyl that's justified by AMAZING packaging:

Monoliths and Dimensions

Nearly all of Phil Elverum's (Mt Eerie, The Microphones) releases:

How cool would it be to get an Axiom Verge release with that much thought put into the packaging?

Just this week the Turtles "box set" only contained all colour variants of the same album. Some collectors want all versions, but of course most will be sold online :p

I think the gripes with pricing are valid because it wasn't always like this. Ten, maybe even five years ago the average LP was going for $12-15 and used records were $5 or less. Now it's $20-25 on average with the used market somewhere around $10-12. Lots of very poor digital masters being pressed into vinyl and sold at three times the rate at the CD with the same source tapes.

There truly are some amazing records were getting as a result of the increased user base, but the price gouging is real and serves no purpose. The bubble will pop soon and we'll see prices drop $5-10 on average.

Okay, I can't even eat my own dog food. I just bought the Mother 2 2LP, 1) because it's a nice hot pink vinyl, and 2) it says it's a remaster, so it should be a nice listening experience. If this doesn't live up to expectations, I'm going to sit out and take a wait-and-see approach in regards to these VG linyls.

But God damn if I just paid $46 for a 2LP with shipping.

Now if I can get a copy of Fripp & Eno's No Pussyfooting on vinyl for less than $30, I'd be a happy man.

that's a priceless item

It's pretty awesome. I wish they'd put out Brave New World. I know it had a tiny release overseas, but it goes for a couple hundred now because it was so limited. One of my favorite albums ever, so I need it. I suppose if I stop buying $30-50 video game albums I can afford it in no time.

I hope for some Zuntata love ...
For as much as I love their old games, I'd love Infinity Gene or Groove Coaster vinyl.
:O ZUNTATA

STS have expressed some Zuntata love on Twitter themselves, so that seems very likely (EDIT: More than likely - it's also confirmed now). Also, it's not just hinting anymore - they just posted on reddit that:

At this time I can say we have an incredibly solid partnership in place with Taito which will yield multiple pressings.

Super exciting news :)

So I was thinking (and in hopes some of these VGM distributors would notice), what my wish list of vinyl VGM soundtracks would be.

I've been listening to the Read Only Memories soundtrack and it's fantastic - it really captures that late '80s/early '90s anime cyberpunk synth vibe. And since it's in the same world, VA-11 HA-11-A, both of which are a-maze-ing. I'd love to see some distributor come up with double LPs for these or a nice box set with both.

And these were obviously inspired by Snatcher, which the OST has been long out of print. Giant Bomb did a retro quick look of this game recently, but coincidentally I'd been thinking how I'd love to see a company like Bravewave do a Generations release of Snatcher and Policenauts. Especially after listening to that first episode of Waveform, everything they did to remaster the SFII soundtrack, it would be great to hear how they could work their magic on Snatcher/Policenauts. And since both have been long OOP, I'd love to see these get remastered and re-released.

Perfect media for these four soundtracks, these beg to be listened to in warm, rich analog goodness. What's on your wish list?

My number one want is Braid. Such a great soundtrack that would be nice to just put on and listen to.

Other random shit I'd be all over:

Castlevania
Batman (NES)
Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII, VIII, Tactics
Chrono Trigger

Yes. please. And if SE would start doing regular black or colored vinyl versions instead of mediocre picture discs that'd be great as well. Hell, they could do a box set version for each Final Fantasy game with the full osts and I'd be all over that.

batman and jreturn of the joker would be freaking great either that or a sunsoft record that had music from all of their nes games

Coming to think of it, Jet Set Radio would be a great match for the medium. The PAL and NTSC-J releases mimic the design of a record.

jet set radio and future id be all over as well

My wife got me an LP-120 for my birthday; I'm very happy to have a big boy player again, but I sure will miss the automatic start and stop.

Holy crap this is so perfect.
I also recently got the LP-120. Can anyone recommend a good amplifier to go with my seinheisser 598s?

Action shot.

I also properly set my tonerarm weight and antiskate, something I never did on my old DJ tables (yeah, yeah, I didn't know, I figure my trance collection is ever madder at me).
