NPD Sales Results for January 2016

It is worth pointing out that SFV is currently sitting at 84 on metacritic. So while it is indeed lower than SFIV it is a far cry from the mid to low 70s some were predicting here. I think itll manage just fine.

Its worth pointing out that the range in my post is anywhere from 81+ to 73 or whatever Destiny ended up at. And, its also worth nothing that MC is going to go down as, right now, it is reporting only a handful of the negative (7 to sub-7) reviews and has been slow to update.

Its sitting at 80 on the more updated OpenCritic which, as should be of no surprise to anyone, puts it right in the category previously mentioned (ie. Battlefront, Splatoon, and Destiny).

200-300K strikes me as a tad pessimistic for Street Fighter, minimal single player content or not. I mean, that's not a lot above what Fire Emblem seems to be projected to do, and in no way should Fire Emblem be comparable to Street Fighter.

That seems waaay too pessimistic for me. That's Japan level bomb for US.

Huh? Opencritic is missing a bunch of reviews too.

It has more than Meta (hence a more representative average), and yes it is also missing reviews.

Edit: Nevermind, they are counting non-scored reviews in their review score tally. So they have similar numbers. Either way its besides the point, regardless of the aggregate, its still in-line with the aforementioned titles.

Soooo....opinions. Cause I like these.

Which places higher for February NPD, Far Cry Primal or SFV?

I'd be surprised if far cry beats out SFV. I think it's really down to brand name for which I think SFV has more clout than far cry even with limited platforms.

Also, I think the primal theme limits their audience who is used to explosions and bullets. Dinosaurs may be in, but I don't think that extends to mammoths.

Purely conjecture based on my tiny gaming ecosystem. Couldn't even guess a sales number for either title.

Im leaning that way but SFV has an extra weeks of sales. That will help it. Primal opening week bigger than SFV opening for sure imo but that extra week may give SF the edge. Also never know Primal may be reviewed poorly

Hmm... I never really gave it much thought. Kinda assumed it would be a Hardline-esque situation, and Primal would ride on the FC name to the top.

Normally I would agree but Primal is such a departure from the standard series its gonna be a bit of a question mark for the fanbase. I think reviews will be a big deal for that one.

Primal by a not small margin Open world AAA action vs h2h fighter, action sells more to the masses.

Yeah I lean towards Primal as well as of now. I just don't think SFV is going to move at retail the levels some think. That said SFV is one of the kinds of titles that has a large digital presence imo.

I'm not seeing much hype for Primal and it's not a multiplayer game like Hardline was. I think being on Xbox and PS4 will give it the edge though.

In the end it was a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't for Capcom I suspect in terms of launching early.

They have to have the game ready for both their financials and for the new season of Pro competition, but releasing what some might describe as "half a game" definitely seem to have hurt its reviews (though nowhere near what some suspected, because it -seems- that the core game is simply superb).

So while it is releasing in the mid 80s (MC) score, there will probably always be a nagging suspicion that maybe, possibly, SF V would have been a near 90 if it had been complete and the SP would have been on the level (June hopefully will answer that question)...

But that we will never know, and neither will Capcom ever know whether that would have implied better launch month sales or not...

It's going to be the Driveclub of fighting games.

I'm not quite sold on the reasoning that more content would have resulted in better SFV sales. For the mainstream, reviews came out today and with it,the complaints about the content.

Yet, sales predictions for SFV have been largely consistent for sometime now.

At best I say it'll be #10 in February. Street Fighter and Far Cry will chart, and after DBX success in the US, I think Naruto can chart. Garden Warfare 2 could also chart as well now that it will launch on both XB1 and PS4 at the same time.

In my heart of hearts I am sincerely hoping Cyber Sleuth charts. Seriously one of the best damn JRPGs I've played in years. I don't care how unlikely it is or how ridiculous I sound pimping Digimon games. I wanna see it succeed.

That would make it the first JRPG to chart this gen (unless I'm miscounting something) - not a bad feather on one's cap, I'd say.

I believe Cyber Sleuth would have to sell 200k+ to chart next month.

That just ain't realistic.

I think it'll do around 50k, which should hit Bamco's expectations, and is a pretty good result all things considered.

I bought it because you said it was good, but I got it digitally, so my purchase won't count or perhaps exist at all, sorry.

Far Cry Primal Feb NPD: 825k
SFV Feb NPD: 480K

I forget what Far Cry 4 debut month sales were.

Lower than what you have the spin off going for by 150k.

Am I missing something here? A spin off releasing 4 months after it was announced to almost no fan fair, will only be tracked for 1 week, and people are expecting 500k+. What are people thinking?

Haha well I'm happy to hear my recommendations carry so much weight! How do you like it so far? The story starts getting quite solid around chapter 10. Really hoping more JRPG fans give it a chance.

Ubi games almost always tend to be sales beasts regardless of fanfare or perceived quality.

The other thing is the install bases across X1 and PS4 have grown well since 2014 but whats going against Primal imo is that it's not releasing during the holidays like FC4.

But overall yeah, my estimation is definitely a little on the high side.

Oh, I've no idea! lol

I got it a couple weeks ago or whatever, but I usually don't really play the games I buy. I'm actually sorta busy and I get interrupted a lot, so I basically just buy stuff in support of the industry.

So like, I should really check it out? Does it have a bunch of real time nonsense, or can I play it while I'm doing something else?
I seriously miss that one-handed PS1 controller. =(

If you enjoy JRPGs like Persona or Shin Megami Tensei yes you should definitely play it. No there are no real time battles at all. Everything is turn based. It's also super easy on Normal. If you want a bit more of a challenge put it on hard. Even on hard it doesn't get difficult until a 8 or so chapters in. But yea it's a super chill game. You can def play it whilst doing other stuff. But I will say the OST has some really great tracks (esp later on) so it's worth listening to if you can. Cheers for buying the game regardless!

I can't imagine having enough spare $ to buy games that I don't intend to play. But hey if you can afford it and it matters to you to support developers and what not go for it!

Amazon is also out of stock of Street Fighter 5.

So that's PS4 Call of Duty bundle & Street Fighter 5 out of stock on Amazon on the release date of Street Fighter 5.

I think Street Fighter fans are buying PS4 for the 1st time & the demands are higher than Amazon expected.

How they sell out before daybreak? Amazon should have been prepared.

I actually think SFV will sell better than Far Cry Primal. As you said, SFV will have an extra week of tracking. Also, FC:primal seems to be getting little marketing. I remember Ubisoft putting out a lot of trailers for FC4 before the game released, but that doesn't seem to be the case for Primal. It is getting released on XB1 as well, however, so, who knows. But I'm going with SFV for now.

o_O

No fucking way

I did say high end xD

With digital it should be in and around 650-800k I think.

But I think some of gaf are sleeping on Primal. The Far Cry name holds a lot of cache at this point, it'll sell great going into March NPD too barring the game being absolutely terrible.

I agree that the Far Cry name is now bigger than years ago.

Far Cry 4 has sold ( shipped ) 7 million by end of 2014, and after that the game showed amazing legs... If will not sell 10 million lifetime, i'm confidence that the next big Far Cry ( FC5? ) will be a +10 million seller WW.

That said... Even if i love this series, i don't know, Primal seem a random game in the Far Cry series.

I agree that will do great, but nothing of crazy, not even Close with the succes of Far Cry 3 or Far Cry 5 imo.

I hardly see over 400K including Digital. Imo, of Course... Happy to be wrong.

Since we're on the topic of Far Cry Primal, does anyone else think that having dinosaurs in the game would generate more interest? I know that the game would be much more desirable for me if dinosaurs were in. Jurassic World revitalized my childhood love of dinosaurs. :p

I think REX Novis is more interesting in Far Cry Series now. :p

Yeah, I thought of Rex after I wrote that post too. However, unless there's a big twist or reveal halfway through the game, I don't think there are dinosaurs in it, which is disappointing for me and Rex, I'm sure. :p

So the game has sold on PC in weeks what it took months to do on consoles?

No wonder square enix rushed to get it out on PC

Oh, I have P4G on Vita too. I'm actually sorta confused about Persona and SMT. Are they different games, or what? I don't remember if there was a sale or if I just finally decided it was time, but I couldn't make much sense of what I was seeing in the store. For SMT, all I saw were games called Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 1-3, but then there's also different games called Persona 2 and 4, and a second version of 4, but no 1 or 3… =/ So I got P4G because it was Vita native. /shrug

So I should play that too? And it's a strictly auto-pause, X-to-proceed affair? I can unlock the Vita, play turns 7-12 of the battle, and put it right back in my pocket? That'd be pretty sweet. Oh, my GF uses the Vita far more than I do though. I'm guessing I'd need to get to a save point before she switches back to Organ Trail or Hatoful Boyfriend? Probably not state-persistent like an iOS app would be?

Anyway, not that I don't like action. I like Diablo a lot, and Tomorrow Children is my current fascination. I just very rarely have a chance to fully focus on the game 100% of the time, and that doesn't tend to mesh well with modern game design. That's part of the reason indies appeal to me so much; it feels like less of a commitment, so I'm more likely to jump in to begin with. So yeah, I'm down for anything with a lot of rules, strategy, and bookkeeping. Speaking of, we need games like Aerobiz and Ports of Call again. Maybe that'd give me something to do…

Cheers for buying the game regardless!

I feel like I deserve to have one hobby, even if I typically don't have time to participate myself. :p
