How I imagine Carter in his writing room

Again, I think the issue with this season are the plot threads condensed into a small amount of episodes in 45 minute time slots. If we get a season 11 it needs to be no less than 8 episodes with 3 or 4 of them being Myth-arc focused and the rest Monster of the week.

Someone should make a gif of when Scully pathetically and indifferently throws her hands up in the air when the driver tries to drive onto the street, because that basically sums up the Chris Carter episodes.

All this hate, I still had my fun and would like to see Season 11. Hopefully with more episodes, at least ~10. I think 2 Myth episodes simply weren't enough, a 2-parter would also probably work better for these, which we often got back in the day.

There were elements of this episode that I liked, but I also feel like Chris Carter had too much to get off his chest and just threw everything into this episode. I like the outcome of the cigarette smoking man, that was one of the best twists in this episode. There was also an attempt to try and mend the "end of the world in 2012" ending from season 9. But the whole vaccine plot was too much dumped in such a short period of time. The cliffhanger ending was like Chris Carter saying "fuck it!". The lack of ambiguity and over emphasis on urgency was like watching Chris Carter scrambling to come to some big over arching conclusion.

Given all its short comings it's still more x files something I never thought we'd see again. I hope the ratings are enough to convince fox to go ahead with another fleshed out full season even if we get episodes with the fake mulder and scully, I'd be fine as long as there is more.

I hated every Chris Carter episode, but I'd gladly sit through another season if it means we get more Darin Morgan.

Fuck Fox for that ending. Fuck you!

I'm the biggest X-Files fan I know, I've enjoyed all five previous revival episodes but this was horse shit. It was going well until the last 10 minutes and wtf just happened?! ARGH!! So angry!

Fucking shit finale.

All I got from the episode was...Agent Einstein..Agent Einstein.. Agent Einstein.. Agent Einstein.. Agent Einstein.. Agent Einstein.. Agent Einstein.. Agent Einstein.. Agent Einstein..

And all she did at the end was lie down on a table.

I'm genuinely angry about this ending. Fox made me believe in the show again and they just kicked me in the balls so hard

that was actually accurate science

Curing people with that, not so much.

Having just finished watching Robotics;Notes, it was funny to me that the X-Files Illuminati have basically the same goal.

I was actually pretty impressed with how they presented PCR (other than the whole "we didn't use enough" point) and electrophoresis. That was the best depiction I have seen in a TV show. Of course. . .

How would they PCR alien DNA with six bases (A/T, G/C, and let's say B/Q) when the lab would only have A/T and G/C in stock? We know other nucleotides exist (and have edited then into bacterial genomes) but they aren't going to be a staple of a hospital lab.

Hell, how does the alien DNA replicate in Scully's cells when they will not have a natural supply of B/Q? Did the conspirqcy guys include DNA that codes for an anabolic pathway that makes B/Q when they gave her alien DNA?

Actually, once Scully gives everyone this alien DNA, how will it replicate?

Thought this was dreadful (did Brenda Hampton take a pass at this script or something? stop saying alien DNA!). While it was nice to see these characters again, tbh now that this portion of the revival is over I don't know that I really want any more. Certainly not interested in the new agents and I didn't see much here to indicate that it would get any better moving forward.

But on the plus side I really liked that third episode, so there's that!

Anyone else plan to play the X-Files video games?

The FMV one isn't bad, though it really lacks Mulder and Scully.

The Resident Evil-ish one is okay though you may have to cheat near the end to beat it. I liked that you could play as either Mulder or Scully and get different takes on the situation.

I was under the impression that the sequence itself is defined as "alien" but it still follows the A/T G/C code. Otherwise they would have been able to sequence that part of her genome.

The alien sequence could just be artificial instead of literally being taken from one of the aliens. If they have a different genetic code, maybe the scientists managed to translate whatever is needed into a humanized sequence/protein.

The described scenario would actually not be so hard to achieve with our current tech and you would not need special alien proteins.
They mentioned that it's probably an analog to the CRISPR/Cas system (or maybe even CRISPR/Cas itself but they kept it for themselves for decades after finding out about it from the aliens).
The CRISPR/Cas DNA constructs can be integrated permanently into the genome of a cell. It can be used to cut out specific genes like genes for the immune system. Expression of the constructs can be triggered later by e.g. adding certain antibiotics.

To get it into human cells, you would package it into e.g a lentiviral expression system (basically empty viruses that can infect cells and integrate whatever DNA you want). That can be hidden in the smallpox shots and over time most cells would be altered (mainly you need to target the the immune stem cells and sperm/eggs or alternatively just keep infecting each generation).
One problem would be how to get a healthy immune system to ignore that virus long enough to reach the necessary infection level.

The cure seems to be another alien/artificial DNA construct administered only to chosen people (that are also infected by the stuff above) which expresses something that would block the effect of the immune-system-targeting alien DNA.

Though it would make more sense if the cure is the CRISPR/Cas and the "AIDS" construct is something that just blocks genes/proteins of the immune system (e.g. via silencing RNA) because otherwise they would not be able to stop it if the immune system genes were actually cut out from the genome. In that case they could produce a cure using again a retrovirus system (though obviously not within hours as it was depicted in the episodes).

I kinda liked the finale but hate that it ended on a cliff hanger. I do think it should have been spread out too two or three episodes though. Everything this season seems rushed and crammed due to the short episode count. Overall the season was not very good but I still crave for more and glad they are continuing the mythology.

I would split it - mythology episodes were just on the positive side of terrible, and the monster of the week episodes were quite good.

Well it was filmed in Vancouver. We are quite polite even when we're rioting

Carter got 6 Episodes to rekindle the magic. POOF!

I have to say, after watching this season, something to me felt "off" the whole way. I cant put my finger on it but it didnt feel like the old ones.

We're open to discuss spoilers here, yeah?

Didn't get to watch it live, and couldn't be bothered to wait for Hulu. Did the episode really end with her just looking up at the UFO, or did I miss an extra minute or so?

Nope. It just ends like that. Bigass UFO shows up right in the open for everyone to see.

Having just finished watching Robotics;Notes, it was funny to me that the X-Files Illuminati have basically the same goal.

The logistics of it have me pulling my hair out. There is no way in hell that you could get that cure from that one hospital to everyone in the world. Certainly not if Mulder is already at a point where he's beyond curing that way. He can't be the only one.

If the next season doesn't have a massively depleted population and they imply that Scully simply e-mailed the pertinent info to every hospital around the world in time for hardly anyone to die, I won't be surprised but I will be angry. Hell, they implied that roads were gridlocked, power was going out, and that the internet was starting to suffer from everyone being sick. If they plan on doing a 'bloop' everything is okay now... they went way too far towards Armageddon.

I think the biggest issue with the new season was trying to cram a seasons worth of conspiracy episodes into like 2.

To really tell a fleshed out story with build up etc you need more than the 2 episodes.

Hopefully next time they go for like 10-12 episodes for the season with 4 or so being conspiracy linked episodes.

the funniest part was when Joel McHales internet station was getting static and cutting out because.... no one was there to man the cameras

What the actual fuck was that? No seriously what was it? That didn't seem like a season finale. This better be coming back, I watched the entire series just for this season and all it was, was a giant cock tease. I wish Robert Patrick wasn't so upset with the show runners so the guy would come back he would have been a great addition.

I have to imagine next season would be some sort of time jump.

Maybe aliens saved Earth from a mass extinction level event and no one even knows it. That would be a cop-out but a likely scenario.

The size of this event and its implications actually go against what Chris Carter wanted to establish with this revival. He wanted to play into the lack of trust and paranoia people have regarding their government. The finale takes that entirely another step with Smoking Man becoming a mustache twirling villain who orchestrated the end of the world as we know to establish a new world order. It's less about X-Files style paranoia now and more about mass extinction.

It's not a bad idea but it's hard to play on the type of paranoia that this show is known for when you're dealing in active world ending events. It's less X-Files and more Doctor Who in that sense. That's actually what this finale felt like.

I didn't mind it necessarily but the world in the X-Files universe will less parallel our own if they see the events of this finale through and that's a detrimental change, in my opinion.

I think the A/V Club review has some good points:

It’s the end of the world, and The X-Files feels awful
...
I still think this could be good. If we get another season of The X-Files, I will be happy and I will look forward to it, because the core is still sound. Mulder and Scully are still great characters, and if this was treated more like an anthology series, one that brought in new writers with fresh ideas, there’s no reason why it couldn’t be a terrific, scary ride again. The problem is, you’d need to junk the mythology completely. And you’d need someone other than Chris Carter in charge; or else, if he’s going to stick around, someone convince him to stop writing scripts. Otherwise this is just going to keep getting worse. and as someone who lived through season nine, I know exactly what “worse” means.

Ending the X-Files miniseries on a cliffhangar is the best thing in all of television. Hahaha.

Other than that a worthy return and glad they brought it back. Here is to another season hopefully in the coming years!

I'm still angry more than 12 hours later.

Like... eurgh. EURGH.

They name drop William multiple times an episode, so you figure he'll at least show up in the last episode...

BUT NOPE. They just realize at the very end that they need his stem cells.

You figure that might at least have some attempt at explaining how you survive a rocket to the face. But nope.

I hate Chris Carter.

FUUUUUUUUUUUU DAT ENDING.

When's the new season? Whens?!

I didn't watch the last few seasons but as I recall there were some theories that Fox was CSM's son by way of an affair between his mom and CSM, did anything ever happen with that?

That whole interaction between CSM and Fox was some weird, passive aggressive stuff. "Imma drive down to confront you, then die in your room, wait no never mind I'll drive back up to Washington now."

Why bother getting Skinner back to give him fuck all to do? Eurgh the more i think about this revival the more I hate it
The worst part is after all the things Skinner has done to save and help Mulder, Mulder is still suspicious of him and treats him like shit.

I don't know I like it but the ending... Fuck off Carter, and the fight scene on Mulder's house was shoot like amateur garbage. The alien stuff is boring at this point, it was cool in the 90s, is not anymore for me. The season was hit and miss for me but overall I'm happy the show is back and I'm 100% sure The X-Files can still be great in this day and age but with other showrunner.

I think the biggest issue with the new season was trying to cram a seasons worth of conspiracy episodes into like 2.

I got the impression that episode 2 also tied into the mythology.

With that said, it felt rushed. Absolutely no build up, people just got sick and we're all "oh damn it's the apocalypse! Alien DNA!"

3 was great.

2 was... fine.

4 was acceptable.

1, 5 and 6 were, perhaps, a waste of my time.

Also, I'll never understand why Einstein was so furious at Mulder in episode 5. She had quite literally just met him. She and Miller were both pretty terrible and it's unfortunate that we may have to see them in future episodes if this show comes back. It's as if Carter figured he would make us pay for not liking Doggett and Reyes more. We didn't know how bad it could get!

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
Blech.

Alien DNA. Anomaly. Conspiracy.

The mythology on this been an incomprehensible mess for ages, the revival should have unceremoniously jettisoned all of it. The whole conspiracy is so strained and inconsistent that my eyes just glaze over as Scully turns into a prophet and CSM delivers his evil villain speech.

Oh btw:

I cannot believe the number of people who are actually entertaining the notion that the Mulder and Scully clones were introduced as potential replacements.

There is no way. They are the Poochie of The X-Files universe.

I take it back.

I thought even Chris Carter was not misguided enough to introduce characters with the same traits, gender and hair color as potential replacements for the two iconic leads of a TV show.

Now I believe him capable of it. A premise that feels like a Saturday Night Live sketch might actually be his his longterm plan for the future of the franchise.

I think the mythology can evolve but, yeah, Chris Carter needs to go at this point. I hate to say it but it's for the best.

FIRE UP THE RATINGS SCOREBOARD:

The X-Files (FOX) – F 2.4/7 7.59
Supergirl (CBS) 1.5/5 7.31
Superstore (NBC) – F 1.4/5 4.64
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (The CW) 0.4/1 0.98

There better be another season. If this was it, why did they even do this in the first fucking place. You don´t revive a series for a mini-season, only for it to end on a blue-balling cliffhanger and then just throw you hands in the air and call it quits.

I want the confirmation for season 11 this week.

Apparently a lot of people didn´t like this season/episode. I liked it, which is why i want another one, and longer one.

Solid episode despite some crappy dialogue. I'm pissed how they ended it because we have no assurance the shows is coming back for season 11.

Overall, the 6 episodes were enjoyable and it was good to have the X-Files back. I'd rate each episode as follows:

1. Good
2. Great
3. Awesome - Top 5 for me
4. Good
5. Mediocre - Mulder tripping was the best part of it.
6. Good
