Kotaku: Sony is working on a ‘PS4.5; briefing devs on plans for a more powerful PS4

I personally think all of this is fine. As long as the length in between new console versions doesn't get abusive, I'll be glad to see a more rapid evolution of tech.

Wow at so called gamers saying no.... This should be in the ready for this holiday for us gamers that want 4K gaming.. I work hard and will purchase hard to enjoy my down time.... Enough of the 1080P,we are in 2016...

If tt costs 500-600 to upgrade or whatever, at least we have a choice and would be day 1...

lmao. You expect a box to be released that lets you play 4k gaming in the 500-600 range??? That is some funny shit. 980ti's alone barely can hit 4k @30fps and that is turning some settings down to get there and those are +$600 GPU's alone. You want 4k and minimum 30fps out of console by the end of the year, expect to pay about $1,200.00 if not more for that pleasure. Perhaps in full year or year and a half you can get a console doing 4k/30fps at around $800+.

Sounds like a sure thing.

Not surprised at all if this is true.

These consoles can't even run 1080p in most cases. This should hopefully be a rather short gen.

Once again vcc, I totally agree with you on this topic.
I somehow get the feeling that this whole recent upgrade talk is nothing but a nice little game of poker. Both MS and Sony are looking at possibilities how to handle console business in the future. Like I've said before, if MS announces a XboxOne.5, Sony will follow: this is the last step of transforming consoles into affordable PCs.

It does seem like they're playing chicken and MS calling all in every hand just to test.

Shhh...now...all happy dreams. Sony will take a loss in this one cause 4kgamers.

I think a lot of the fears here are justified. Most people are afraid that instead of going from 8 year gaps in consoles, we will suddenly begin moving to 2 year gaps where the predecessor becomes obsolete.

In this world where PS3/360 still sell millions of copies, Sony and Microsoft aren't stupid enough to suddenly shift their profit drivers to hardware and not royalties from software.

If a more powerful iteration of the PS4 hits the market and you have games that are "only playable on PS4.5" then it seems at that point just call it a PS5 and have it fully backwards compatible. You'll at least avoid a nightmare scenario with uninformed consumers buying something that won't run on their machine at home.

Also, this.

Agreed! If they do an update it should be a proper one.

See this is what we im trying to wrap my head around

This has to be a model revision building in VR juice and allowing 4K video

The leap required for 4k gaming? Come the fuck on

If they try to give you a more powerful system up front. That was forward thinking people moaned about initial price. They try to upgrade mid cycle people moan. Just let console be ultra weak and cheap for those that want it. They can't break away, from the moaning of people, not willing to pay for the hobby.

I think this will seal the fate of console gaming.

If you need to upgrade, it's no better than an expensive PC.

I'm not understanding this mentality.

If you buy a monitor today and a better one comes out a year from now, will that make you upset? If you buy a car now, and an updated model is released next year, will that make you upset? What if you bought a printer today and a better one comes out a year from now... how does that affect you?

Sony and MS want that mobile phone money.

People upgrade their phone every 2 years.

It´s the Apple thing: 3 3S 4 4S 5 5S

I think it´s really cool.

Games will stay compatible, but look better on a 4,5.

This. Playing the same games in 4k seems like an incremental upgrade for many people.

If there is enough people clamoring for 4k games then sure, release this. But as some point there need to be a cutoff. A true ps5 with games not possible on ps4.

I guess if true ps5 is farther away than we have been assuming, then 4.5 could come out in two years.

Yeah 4k is pretty niche right now. I think the details will be revealed and it's a HDMI upgrade with a 4k scalar built in. And everyone will go meh.

If they're talking to developers about it now, it's surely a few years out still, which would be well in line with what we expected the console generation to last.

A lot of people are going to feel silly after some of the things that were said about ms. Honestly if Microsoft get it so every ganes purchase bags me a pc copy of the game I will go with them

There are SO many ways for this to go horribly wrong....I guess it could work if they sell you a psvr-like extension unit that's small...but still...I so don't like this.

They better off a free or reduced upgrade to current PS4 owners, or I can see Sony losing a LOT of customers.

That makes absolutely no sense. What will the millions of current owners do? Throw their PS4s in the trash and never buy another game? Current owners that don't upgrade will continue to buy games and play them as if the new version never came out.

Man, I hate this Sony.

Can we stop fragmenting PS4 game development?

First party studios will have to focus between PS4, PS4.5 and VR? Time for bed, Sony.

Yeah I know right? Wait, I just thought of something... What if they can focus on PS4 at 30fps and just have a 60fps toggle for PS4.5.?
Wouldn't that be great?

Or, holy shit, like, stay with me now, what if there were like different settings in games that you could turn on and off. So, lets say Motion Blur makes you sick? Turn that shit off and even on OG PS4 you get a bit better performance. Don't care for high rez shadows? Turn it off to get those FPSs!

But then, man this is the kicker, lets say you buy PS4 Prime and you can click all of the little boxes and STILL get 60fps at 1080p. Man, that would be cool wouldn't it? Like the games would be identical in substance but the graphics to fps ratio could vary based on user choice. What a concept!

VR is a different beast all together.

You speak the truth, I doubt this thing will be ready before 2018, and even than I think by that time we'll be living in a world where we are craving new hardware.

Also the sweet spot on PC has always been 2500X1600X60 FPS :p.

The only word I have is "wow".

First Microsoft talk of incremental upgrades and now Sony apparently have.

If this is where consoles are headed I'm just gonna sell my Xbox and put the money towards upgrading my PC some more.

Yeah I'm on board with this. I love Sony and I love my PS4 but if this is the shit I'm looking forward to? I'm going all PC, fuck Sony.

This is hyperbole

Obsolete? Ps4 will handle another 2-3 years of games at least

You guys realize we are starting to hit atomic transistor limits right?

The idea is really possible by today's standarts in a way, where PC seems to outrun everyone in the first place. Let's not forget Nintendo did the first plunge with their New N3DS. When that happened, it just fractured their install base, and their install base is waayyyy more populated than the PS4 20 millions adopters. If Nintendo was ready to do so, I don't see why Sony wouldn't follow...

I don't understand why people don't want this. If they make it backwards and forwards compatible, I don't see the problem.

PS4.0 has to be no less than 1080p/30fps though.

I've given it more thought.

I have been gaming since the mega drive.

The turn around times on consoles then was quite quick. Especially ones which failed.

More power was needed and I remember getting the mega drive when i was 6, sega CD and then a Saturn 5 years later, a PlayStation later and then 3 years later getting a ps2 at launch, then 5 years later it was an Xbox 360.

From then it was a full 8 years for the next gen to arrive. We have had a very long generation, and it will be strange to go back to those days of a new gen every 5 years, as so far we are halfway through!

I think having consoles that have an increase in power in increments may be a good solution, but many people may just want another long generation.

Good shit, AMD/Nvidia upcoming processor jumps are going to be too good to ignore as far as power per watt. It's either waste it on an Xbox One/PS4 Mini or go big... Maybe they should do both.

New 3DS was a sort of half step in that direction, with fragmentation.
NX, Playstation, and Xbox platforms will be platforms. No fragmentation and you get X years of support for older models, just like phones/tablets.

I would love to see a 1 or 2 year cycle in console country. Much like tablets and phones. As long as they can guarantee compatibility for 3 years at minimum.

I wouldn't expect it to be able to suddenly run the ps4 library at 4k, but some games should be able to be written for 4k if they feel it's worth it, just as some games are being made for native 120fps VR on the current APU, which is half way there.
Could imagine a 'best on ps4.5' label on Gran Turismo 7 whenever that comes out.
