Bwahahaha!

What is Nintendo thinking.......

I honestly don't get this. If it's the handheld, I think it suffers from the lack of physical buttons as well as some other lesser issues that might be addressed to some degree with the final consumer build. If it's the home consoles controller, I think it's unbelievably bad.

So let's all just hope that this is the NX or Nintendo's next handheld.

Well, there it is.

This x 100000

i simply cant get my head around wtf they are thinking, i wud not want a screen in my controller i would have to look at. my tv is fit enough to handle that job!

ninty you have lost me... for now

I'm not going to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt that they'll use a decent panel after the 3DS debacle.

It's possible which is why I laugh at people losing their minds over touchscreen buttons.

Exactly!

Especially when for all we know they could still be trying to figure out button count and placement. Makes it easier if it was on a detachable part that can be replaced easily in the Dev kit, rather than directly on the more expensive part of the controller (with the screen)

Nintendo knows that they need to focus for this system to come back from the image left in some people's minds about the Wii U, have a little faith that they know what they are doing... They have been around for a long time after all...

Seriously WTF? how can one use that tree and locate where it is? lol is there some website where you can upload tree pics and it pinpoints the location for you?

Knew it would be Ubisoft, had to be Malmo or Helsinki

Helsinki doesn't have trees in front!

Looks pretty real to me. I know everyone is freaking out, but before you completely dismiss it, remember the Wiimote and gamepad reveal reactions. Both of those controllers worked and handled fine in the end. That being said, I too have my reservations until there are impressions end I actually use it myself.

There's no way it has this and stays affordable.

Maybe not that particular brand of haptics, but it will have haptics.

About the potential cost of the system, I once feared a screened controller would drive up the price, but then the patents about their "power pods" surfaced and that plus some of the AAA third parties taking an interest in the system leads me to believe we'll be getting a PS4 ballpark with a clear power upgrade path.

Man, this is a disaster. I cannot believe the next Nintendo console's main controller isn't going to have face buttons. This is my nightmare scenario for sure. I can't even imagine playing Smash, Mario Kart, 2D Mario, Zelda, or Virtual Console games on something like that.

Nintendo....what are you freakin' doing?

Yeah, I just wasn't 100% sure what that was or how it works? I'm sure I'll be fine, I'm usually pretty easy to please.

Haptic feedback is using forces, vibrations, and other tactile sensations on a screen. Based on the description, it seems to be implying it will use a specific brand that creates a resistance on the screen when you touch a finger to a virtual button, and then provides a clicking feedback when you apply more pressure.

Is this spoken-word-gaf???

Personally I think the controller looks good and I'm kinda excited to see more.

As far as the shape and comfort of use I think there could be a shell this could snap into with playstation like nubs or handles. Like the steering wheel accessories for wii. It could actually be part of Nintendos new gimmick. They could provide various shells for the controller to snap into. By doing this the accessories could be shared between the console and handheld.

My biggest concern is power. The console needs to be more powerful than the X1/PS4. Even if they charge 399 for it. I think that is key to them getting and keeping 3Rd party ports. Especially with the speculation of Sony and MS developing upgraded hardware.

We're kidding ourselves if we think Nintendo will make this more powerful than current gen consoles. I don't see them ever partipating in that arms race.

Lol, some of the reactions are hilarious. I have no idea how this thing is gonna work or feel, but thanks to this thread, it's already entertaining me. I will stick to my wait and see approach until NX actually revealed.

Because you'll be able to put it into a shell with all the buttons you want?

The haptic button idea isn't some farflung fantasy, it's literally built into this same rumor. Again, I can't say how well it'll work, but it's a real technology that could feasibly be an acceptable replacement, or even an improvement

Well, it definitely seems like futuristic tech, so itd be really cool if Nintendo pulls it off

I mean, everybody would want to at least try it, and that's good.

In that sense, it's like motion controls, and not like the WiiU touch screen

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Again, the OP says that it will work like Apple's tactic feature. Have you ever used an iPhone 6S? It's not a replacement for the reference point you get from physical buttons and that you need for blind use.

We don't know how Nintendo have implemented this technology.

All I know is they wouldn't release a controller that made games harder to play, that is not how they work. If they are happy with the design then it means Super Mario Bros et al can be played comfortably and without a loss of control. They wouldn't proceed otherwise, they are about making games easier to play not harder.

The whole thing is too small, even the thumbsticks.

Because it's fake. Can someone do a size comparison to the original "leak"?

If different sizes probably fake. If same size, could be same faker, or fakers working together. Or possibly real I suppose. Seems way too small though.

The NX controller being so awful makes us appreciate the game pad more. This is Nintendo's plan to save the Wii U. :p

I think you have a different definition of working and handling fine...

The rage on GAF could be a good sign for Nintendo. Most here are in the Playstation/Xbone camp anyway.

As long as the non gamer crowd sees something in this. (which based on this I kinda doubt)
The negativity stems from the fact that people have used virtual button layouts on mobile devices and have an established opinion on their effectiveness. Not really about console preference. Folks can speculate on additional features, but taken as face value this looks like two analog pads and a touchscreen in place of face buttons.

I'm perfectly okay with it for 3D games, but it might not be that great for 2D platformers or 2D games that require fast inputs.

But, for example, the next Zelda would be great on it I believe.

So the sticker on it says Unit 2

Thats pretty interesting right? It could mean its simply the 2nd NX dev kit they have, or its the 2nd part of tue kit itself, meaning there is more we haven't seen of it
No, it's the NX 2 devkit.
The NX 1 has already been out for 3.5 years.
Maybe you were stuck in a coma for 4 years?

jk

Definitely more attractive than the first "leak" we saw of it. I can see the final product actually being pretty cool once it's finally unveiled, but the lack of buttons is a real downer if they are relegated to the screen.

What's the big deal? It's a prototype; who's to say they're won't be buttons on what comes to market? I also still think this is the handheld device, and while it will work as a controller for the home console it won't be the basic controller.

it's not like nintendo said "hey devs heres a prototype of our new controller the buttons are coming at retail fucking figure it out"

If this is a prototype of what they're actually going to be releasing, the real thing most likely will not have buttons

My Macbook pro has them in the touchpad.

It really feels like a "click"

you know how buttons protrude, and you can rest your fingers on them before you press them? haptic feedback is like that but you can't feel them protrude so you have look at the controller or guess where they are before you maybe press them

Ah, so if they didn't find a solution for that it'd still be completely reliant on muscle memory when looking at a tv screen then huh? I'm not sure if I like the sound of that if it's not a handheld where you'd be looking at the screen anyway.

I mean, theoretically the cool thing about this would be that you could make up new kinds of buttons depending on the functionality the game would need, but that won't really work if you'd need to memorize the layout all over again

I'm glad the feedback is convincing though

Maybe we should wait for Nintendo to present the platform before we doom say...

I'm as worried as you all, but come on. Saying that they're screwed due to this is horribly short sighted. People said the same of the Wii. If there's any company that can make crazy shit like this work, it's Nintendo.

There are also rumors of PS 4.5 and Xbox Two which if true Nintendo console would never have the upper hand.
