I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
just so everyone can read this:

That does not look ergonomic at all.

Well the actual controller they sell to consumers would have handles, right? Like this would sit inside a plastic shell that just isn't present for the dev kit (since the goal here is to let them program for that weird shaped screen). The finished thing would be more like the drawings buried earlier in the thread with actual handles and shit.

More interesting to me is that, if true, they're really doubling down on two screens, something they were never able to fully utilize on the Wii U.

Ah, the reactions are an endless source of comedy gold. So many people freaking out when they know literally nothing about how well it might actually work. For all we know the haptic touch tech might actually work well and the controller might actually be fine to hold.

I mean, for all people complain about Nintendo's 'gimmicks', they at least actually work well when properly implemented in-game (unlike, say, Microsoft, which released two garbage motion control devices that nobody uses anymore), and any deficiencies are usually fixed up in revisions (mainly for handhelds, pretty much every handheld generation has had a major revision that is a massive improvement over the first iteration). I don't see Nintendo half-assing this one. If they're dropping physical face buttons and the d-pad, it wouldn't be unless they know the haptic tech works well enough to replace them. I'm withholding my verdict until we actually get hands-on reports with this thing, but I'm willing to give Nintendo the benefit of the doubt for now.

It's not like screaming about it hysterically is going to change anything, honestly.

Shill.

Interesting read:

The patent has been granted by the USPTO today, April 23, and explains that the display makes use of an actuator to vibrate the surface of the screen and change its temperature in order to fool users that they are not touching a plastic display, but a material of other origin.

The actuator that causes the display to vibrate may move in different directions and with different speed so as to emulate smooth or rough surfaces, like plastic, metal, and glass. In addition, the change of the display's surface temperature also adds up to the "illusion", as it tries to simulate the thermal conductivity of the same material.

Benefit of the doubt? Really?

Fucking why

Wii U controller also had that big ass screen in the middle that was supposed to be used regularly in games.

DS4 has a touch screen and the PS4 is selling like hotcakes.

One was focal point, (or supposed to be one) one wasnt.
Sure. And I think a Nintendo with a good control focal point has proven it can be a big splash, like Wii and DS. Wii U was just a boring one that took a step backward and sideways. Functionally it was nearly identical to the norm found on other consoles for the last 20 years, though, so it wasn't a barrier.

This supposed NX thing, I don't know what to make of.

It's a pretty ballsy move of Nintendo to go with this design.
Personally, I love the form factor; simple & elegant.
I think (optional add-on) grips and tactile, or rather haptic feedback on-screen to emulate face buttons are a must. With those features the controller could be great.

What if we did something like this? We used the middle of the screen for important information, and the outside for custom controller layouts. Obviously Nintendo could add embellishments so it doesn't look so plain.

The right control stick, in this case, substitutes the A button.

This thing is obviously smaller than the gamepad, so the UI would look a lot better and would be tailored especially for that screen. Another user and judged the controller to be about 6" from stick to stick and about 8" across.

Doing it this way makes sure that the players view of the game isn't covered up by anything.
So what's the point of the new design

Where exactly can you see this? Can't make it out.

top right. you can see a reflection that shows the window next to this person's desk, and the upper edge of the window frame is curved instead of straight. this implies that the window isn't rectangular, but rather the top of the window is curved. so all of these images of N headquarters and Massive are showing windows with straight upper edges.

i don't think it's those buildings. maybe something like this.

Kinda?
Explain how _any_ core game could work with this controller without gettng much worse controls.
We don't know ANYTHING about this controller. Including if it's real.
If Nintendo has gone all in on haptic feedback with good enough technology it could be fine, or better than fine, great.

It doesn't look like this will be any friendlier to third parties who just want to port games with parity across the consoles. I doubt this'll bring any onboard.

The controller doesn't look comfortable to me, but the Gamepad's not comfortable for me with the Wii U, so it happens. It looks like criticisms of the DualShock (read: not DualShock 4), where it hangs limply in your hands, which then fall asleep.

But I'll still buy one, Nintendo. You had me at "hang limply in your hands."
