NX Controller Rumor [Up5: Original was fake, and thus this is too]

Or else shit. This won't matter in the long term. What will matter is having the software ready to sell us on whatever it is they are doing and to show it at the same time. Thats all that matters.

That was just a joke threat.

Nintendo can announce this thing whenever.

I'm biased but I'm really interested to see what this thing can do, and I'm impatient to hear it.

Quick and dirty

Pretty much, thanks for this though XD

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
Another reason I doubt this thing being the final form:

That design will be broken screen city
With its edge to edge glass screen. It just doesn't make sense on a toy designed for kids.

Damn good point.

I know Motorola made a phone recently thats....supposed to be..... shatter proof. I dont think it was edge to edge screen tho.

It's possible (and even likely imo if this is true) that Nintendo might be using technology like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JelhR2iPuw0 for digital buttons.

Not really. That tech currently still needs much more R&D to actually be usable. It takes way too long to activate and ruins screens (the buttons start to wrinkle after a while). It would be a trainwreck.

As for haptic feedback... While it currently can simulate different materials, there is still no development to make them actually feel like depressing a real face button.

However, I believe Nintendo may use a good implementation of haptics, it just probably will not be enough for most skeptics.

Why not? Monster Hunter is one of the very few examples I can think of for video games where every single button is used meaningfully and regularly. So much so that even just being on 3DS where for some ungodly reason Start and Select have to function identically, you lose reliable access to either your menu or your kick/charge/poke/special thingy.

But you can put direct access to your menu and the kick/special on the touchscreen. How is that not reliable?

I imagine it akin to playing games on my phone, albeit with feedback.

No shoulder buttons and layout for high speed fighting and racing games? Not for me. Maybe for others.

Well, we don't know if the thing has shoulder buttons or not. And what if the haptic buttons work even better than regular ones? Have you ever used them? I haven't, but I don't think Nintendo would throw all their efforts behind tech that doesn't work properly. Say what you will about their design choices, but a majority of their tech works quite well.

I'm a bit-time Nintendo fan. I enjoy the vast majority of the hardware and software that they put out, but if this leak turns out to be real, it has me concerned. That said, I would wait until trying it out myself before passing final judgement.

First off, although the photo looks very convincing it's still within the realms of possibility that it is fake. Remember how convincing "Nintendo On Revolution" or "Rayman In Smash" looked? It's not unheard of for people to go to extreme lengths to create good hoaxes.

And before we get to the "Doom and gloom" part of this post, let's take a moment to consider the positives that these images portray:
  • It looks pretty slick
  • It's something new that we haven't seen before
  • It suggests more dual-screen gaming, which is cool.

But, as many people have stated before me the big potential problem is the lack of buttons. I'm a mobile developer, and I can honestly say that in my opinion: proper "sit down" game experiences are simply inferior on devices that don't have buttons.

Furthermore, it could be too different. 3rd Party adoption relies on the ease of portability between platforms. If the differences between this and the other consoles is too much hassle, it may just get passed by.

One thing is for certain though, if this is real, it's certainly going to be interesting!

Are poorly applied "Confidential" labels standard practice with gaming dev kits? My job requires me to receive confidential hardware (nothing gaming related) and I haven't seen stickers like that in probably 10 years. Everything has long since switched over to etching such markings directly into the hardware so it can be tracked back to the recipient if it is ever leaked or sold/stolen. Some even go as far as masking the hardware in giant plastic security cases so you can't even see what it really looks like.

No, the rumors aren't for the bleeding edge technologies that people are using to justify no physical buttons, they are haptics. Haptics may not be cheap, but they also aren't creepy magic buttons that would scare my grandmother.

People are grasping at straws to make digital buttons acceptable. Maybe I'm wrong though.
Fair enough. When I made this post I hadn't seen that tech. But the rumors don't rule out it either.

Interesting read:

The patent has been granted by the USPTO today, April 23, and explains that the display makes use of an actuator to vibrate the surface of the screen and change its temperature in order to fool users that they are not touching a plastic display, but a material of other origin.

The actuator that causes the display to vibrate may move in different directions and with different speed so as to emulate smooth or rough surfaces, like plastic, metal, and glass. In addition, the change of the display's surface temperature also adds up to the "illusion", as it tries to simulate the thermal conductivity of the same material.

posting again from green yoshi, sounds very cool!

If apple and nintendo were working together

I'm loving the reactions from people finally coming to terms with the fact that Nintendo ISN'T just going to copy MS/Sony and make a "me too" console.

Anyone who really believed Nintendo was going to release a PS4 clone hasn't been paying attention to the company leadership's public statements for the last decade.

But I mean, screaming hysterically did work to rollback most of the xbone's worst features such as the kinect requirement. We even got backwards compatibility. I say people should scream even harder.

Considering giving in to the fan backlash didn't actually help the xbone sell more than the PS4, I say Nintendo should just roll the dice and stay with the original vision.

But this is the main controller.

I just hope people will warm up a bit, assuming its more comfortable and cheaper than the Gamepad, but who knows.

Gotdamn. Since new pics are leaking every other day, I hope the next one is with someone holding it for some scale. Because as it appears, it looks way too small for my massive paws to hold and use comfortably.

Didn't the patent show that the analog stick would double as buttons? They had a picture of different actions around the stick on the touchscreen and tilting toward those actions acted like a button press. Seems slower than buttons but maybe the mechanics of the stick help somehow.
Yes, you are right.

Well they need to do a proper reveal soon. Right now Nintendo is not in control of the message.

Eh I think it might have potential. I have never tried out haptic buttons on a touch screen so I won't judge it before I do. I also think the whole front panel being a screen is a really cool idea. Yet NX won't be judged on hardware alone. It's also everything else that is currently unknown to us.

At this point we might get a pic of the back of the controller by the end of the day! Leaker is like doesn't care about anything anymore. His/Her job, anything.

Well they didnt do like xbox one with different patterns per company, so more than likely this person wont get caught

I think it looks cool. It'll be interesting to see what it's special features are. I'm half expecting a "nintendo phone" and the final shape to be more rectangular and smartphone like. Then they could replicate the wiiU games, and maybe DS/3ds games (though looking at the current images, that might work better for DS than 3DS
