NX Controller Rumor [Up5: Original was fake, and thus this is too]

Now that I think about it, not having buttons make it great for strategy games, damn you Nintendo, if your machine has a steady support of RTS' I may end buying it.

On these series of fundamental issues that have already been set in motion, progress quickly is being made to prevent and combat further harmful scenarios. This struggling desire some house to have this information emerge I am not in favor of. Experiencing an executive deficit should not warrant illicit actions under a veil of ignorance. The remedy patience and determination, not drawing premature exposure. Goals should be shared.

Look what you did guys, you made Rösti speak weird again! Are you happy now? =/

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
Missed in all the madness over "no buttons?!" is the fact that the sticks look absolutely terrible for a home console.

Yea...I joked about it being the handheld in the other thread....it looks too much like handheld sticks.

It doesn't look like this will be any friendlier to third parties who just want to port games with parity across the consoles. I doubt this'll bring any onboard.

The controller doesn't look comfortable to me, but the Gamepad's not comfortable for me with the Wii U, so it happens. It looks like criticisms of the DualShock (read: not DualShock 4), where it hangs limply in your hands, which then fall asleep.

But I'll still buy one, Nintendo. You had me at "hang limply in your hands."

If this is the controller....it may be with out any 3rd party ports. Might as well call them all NX exclusive.

The control schemes would be too wildly different.

I'm down for a handheld that looks like this and as an optional console controller. I imagine they will allow Pro Controllers for games too.

Give me a controller grip for $5 off amazon and it'll be fine ergonomically. The scroll wheels will be amazing for inventory wheels.

Another reason I doubt this thing being the final form:

That design will be broken screen city
With its edge to edge glass screen. It just doesn't make sense on a toy designed for kids.

The leakers nick on Reddit is "Perkele37". Perkele is a finnish curse word and the old finnish word for the devil.

Swedes really love the word perkele. When a Finnish beer launched in Sweden, the slogan was 'brewed by perkele'.

I've understood that they view Finns barbarian, tough and a bit weird forest people.

From that perspective, I think the tag is in fact more likely to be Swedish than Finnish. Kinda like I sometimes use FinnJävel as a tag.

How does Monster Hunter always get dragged into these things?

Why not? Monster Hunter is one of the very few examples I can think of for video games where every single button is used meaningfully and regularly. So much so that even just being on 3DS where for some ungodly reason Start and Select have to function identically, you lose reliable access to either your menu or your kick/charge/poke/special thingy.

But do you know how it's gonna work? That's a pretty substantial piece of info lol.

Is it made out of liquid metal and physical buttons are going to morph out of the screen? It's a touch screen with virtual buttons. Whether they vibrate or not when you press them is moot.

So basically this will come down to how good the haptics are. Something even Valve had to compromise on. Okay then. I’m not going to go running into the streets with my ‘The End Is Here!” sign, but I’m definitely going to stop by the Home Depot on the way home and pick up some paint and a 2x4.

The rumors suggest this is exactly what they're doing though.
As for cost? Who knows

No, the rumors aren't for the bleeding edge technologies that people are using to justify no physical buttons, they are haptics. Haptics may not be cheap, but they also aren't creepy magic buttons that would scare my grandmother.

People are grasping at straws to make digital buttons acceptable. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Legit question: So if this pad is real and is the sole controller for the console, they are basically saying we do not want any ports of any past, present or future PS4 / XB1 titles at all?

Because no traditional button layout will fuck 80% of them and if they insist on selling a classic controller separately they can think again
It's all about MOBILE, baby!

If this is the reality of the NX, then I'm never going to own one.

I'm about to have a fucking meltdown. Fuck Fuck Fuck.

I should just give up on work for the rest of the day.

Fuck.

top right. you can see a reflection that shows the window next to this person's desk, and the upper edge of the window frame is curved instead of straight. this implies that the window isn't rectangular, but rather the top of the window is curved. so all of these images of N headquarters and Massive are showing windows with straight upper edges.

i don't think it's those buildings. maybe something like this.

I'm pretty sure that's the monitor's back.

It's possible (and even likely imo if this is true) that Nintendo might be using technology like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JelhR2iPuw0 for digital buttons. This would solve pretty much every problem digital buttons have, since the screen is no longer actually flat. If they're doing this, they've probably partnered with a company that developed a technology like this. I feel like once you've got a production system in place, this type of technology might not (though I can't guarantee this without any info on exactly how it's manufactured) be that hard to produce once you know how to make it work. So it might not actually cost Nintendo much to mass produce a system with this type of cutting edge tech, and that it's cost might derive largely from licensing to use it
Why would Nintendo invest this much money into a product and screen when it will be obstructed by your hands?

Other than mobile games - what game can you play where you can cover half the screen and still play adequately?
in b4 1886
What types of games will this support? Will all games be designed around a good 30% of playable space suddenly rendered pointless due to finger placement?

From a development perspective, this severely cripples your options for presentation and gameplay and shoehorns the developer into hallways and corridors when most itch for more horsepower and better peripherals that do not get in the way to help progress the medium and expand ideas, open up new avenues, not close them off.

Nintendo setting up their own demise by putting out a console with no physical buttons so they will be all ready when they are forced to switch to mobile only development after this shit flops.

Unless this is the portable or something, this seems like a lateral movement from the Wii U Gamepad at best... and a downgrade at worst.

That's the back of the monitor creating the fake curves.

I can't believe it. You guys ACTUALLY think this is a DS/Wii moment? That they have stumbled on to something that everyone else just doesn't "get" yet, and that they are going to show the world how shortsighted they were for not believing?

I swear, the lightning in a bottle effects of the Wii and DS really hurt more than it helped. It has both Nintendo and some of their fans really believing that it can be replicated super easily.

Just being able to SEE this controller like this means NO MULTIPLATS. Like..... stop and let that sink in. This things 'success' ceiling is already capped.

I think he meant on whether the old leak was real or not. No need to jump down the guy's throat.

It's basically just a rectangular screen extended with some peripheral vision. I'd like to see a mock-up that takes this into consideration. It looks cool and I think it'll make for a cool experience playing it. I'm worried about the lack of buttons, but still I'm gonna trust Nintendo on this one and keep my judgement until the actual reveal.

Shill.

joking
Okay, that got me a chuckle.

Benefit of the doubt? Really?

Fucking why
Well, fucking why not? Might as well just wait until we actually get hands-on reports before we really start freaking out.
Uncontrolled and wild panic is best when you have no idea what you're in a panic about. We take one look at it and it's just NOPE. It's almost primal.
I know, right? It's like it's the end times or something.
I know what you're getting at and to a point I agree that maybe this isn't the end, but at the same time, my experience with smartphone or tablet games with digital buttons is that they just aren't nearly as comfortable as physical buttons, and the design of the controller itself doesn't look very ergonomic. I think those are reasonable concerns at least. I'm just not sure what the benefit is of getting rid of buttons entirely. At this point in time, another gimmick isn't what Nintendo needs. Stuff like this can be problematic when it comes to cost of the system, development of new ideas, and porting of multiplatform games. From both a player's and a developer's perspective, all most people want is a good game machine.

Also, what the hell is going on for these past few pages?? Something about trees????

I get the concerns are reasonable, I think I'm fine with the potential risks when the possibilities for new controls schemes are honestly rather exciting to me, and this is coming from the perspective of both a player and a developer. Sure, it could go horribly wrong, but Nintendo is pretty reliable when it comes to actually making their crazy new shit actually work well.

lol....it would be insanely cheaper to just use physical buttons. Also I would rather not have them that way......remember how awesome it was to send in your WiiU Pad for repair and wait forever due to Nintendo's support? No thanks!

I mean, this might be true, but I don't know how you can actually make a cost rundown between the two options, especially without any info. And while physical buttons are probably still cheaper, these provide other advantages like a more customizable button layout that can even change depending on the game.

And again, it's entirely possible that it's cheap enough to mass produce it as opposed to a traditional controller that they might sell it easily at an ok price. And we don't know how durable it is either.

Also, I have literally never needed to worry about repairing my Wii U gamepad, so if you have, I can only assume you were unlucky and got a defective one, or weren't really treating it well

well,it was doomed to fail no matter what IMHo,mainly because nintendo burned bridges with pretty much any demographic on the market..but if true, they are basically trying to get their comeback with an idea that would have been considered not good in 2006..touch screen can't substitute physical buttons

100% sure this is just A PART of the complete controller. Nintendo is never ever ditching buttons.

Actually I like that Idea. Imagine if it went into something like those VITA grips things that was a shell with buttons.

But when you want to use the mobile features, games, music for something slip you take it out and out you go.
That would be pretty slick if true.
