Sonic Rush - Too Fast, Too Strong

Sonic Rush released during the 'Dark Age' of Sonic, the same year Shadow the Hedgehog came out.....but unlike that edgy adventure, Sonic Rush stands tall as one of the strongest 2D Sonic games out there.

It is the logical evolution of the Advance series and lead to a series of three enjoyable games (being this, Rush Adventure and Colors DS) being created alongside establishing a core ability Sonic uses in future console adventures.

Lets get started, as your boost'n adventure is right there, ride on ;).

- - - - - - - -

This game started out as a DS tech demo called Sonic DS....creative name :l. Anyway, it was a 3D on-rails title that was demoed in 2004 to show off Sonic on the DS and it was impressive, Sonic running in 3D. It looks to be using Heroes' Seaside Hill Zone as a base.....

It wasn't much but it was still impressive.

Fast forward to 2005 and Sonic Rush was announced, being developed by the team behind the great Sonic Advance series :D. But it looked to be a lot faster with Sonic and newcomer Blaze the Cat having the ability to use a move called the 'Sonic Boost', the music sounded 'different' from past Sonic titles, the characters could use tricks, the characters are 3D models on top of 2D backgrounds/stages.

Things seemed different for 2D Sonic and many were wondering how this would turn out.....and when it released in Fall 2005, people loved this! Got high reviews across the board and people really liked the new character of Blaze. Nice start for this new handheld series of Sonic :D!

Normally I would cover the story first, but I have to cover the gameplay first, as it really is a big leap and massive different compared to the Classic and other Dreamcast Era 2D games.

The core gameplay is an evolution of Advance 2, where the R Action ability and Sonic's Boost ability being fleshed out into major mechanics. Sonic's boost is not mapped to the Y Button and whenever you are in the air, you can mash the B button to make tricks which builds up the boost meter and you can use the R button to preform tricks too but you have the up trick (which lets you go up in the air) and a forward trick (which flies you forward).

Da1uQXeepygBa.gif

Sounds a bit like Advance 2, and that is how the R Button worked in that game too, so its nice seeing it carry over :).

The core 'feel' for the game is a bit more stiff compared to Sonic Advance. Rolling is still useful but the game really wants you to use the Boost, which allows you to run into foes and send them flying. It also makes you go faster, of course XD!

Sonic and Blaze feel different from each other gameplay wise; Sonic feels more or less like he did in the Advance games but you have the ability to homing attack with the R button when near foes/air dash while Blaze is really useful for platforming. Her R tricks send her flying up or right and she has a really useful hovering ability if you hold down R.

ZCMtgKw5zhXcA.gif

Between all of this, the characters feel great to play as despite clear differences between Sonic Advance control wise. I don't mind that difference, because it works with the level design focus.

- - - - - - - - - -

The way levels work is that Sonic and Blaze run through very linear stages that tunnel them forward and.....it works. Sometimes you have issues, like the ruins level having combat rooms where you fight robots, but most of the time, the tunnel-like level design works out great due to the focus on the trick system, boosting and going super fast.

And the game also has a good amount of standard platforming too latter in the game, though its over bottomless pits (which makes Blaze great, as she can carefully hover in the air before landing on them).

This does lead to something I have point out; this is clearly 'different' from the Classic series. I say this as it is the first time the series 2D titles really shift in different directions. Sonic Advance 2 and 3 start going away from the Genesis Era gameplay, but they still had Classic like elements (the Sonic Boost in Advance 2/3 working like how it 'should' work in that style of game; you have to EARN your speed with careful platforming and control).

Sonic Rush is the first 2D game that goes in a completely different direction for the 2D Sonic series.....and it works. It works really damn well I have to say. So, good job on Dimps and Sonic Team's part :D! Rush Adventure and Colors DS continue to balance the speed/platforming with this style as they came out, but Rush set up a strong foundation to build off of.

The story is pushed toward the end of the thread as....its really nothing more then Sonic and Friends stop Eggman from taking over the world. But we get introduced to two new characters; Blaze the Cat and Eggman Nega.

latest

Blaze the Cat is if you mix Knuckles role as a guardian and Sonic ability wise (can run fast, powerful, ect). She is the princess of her world; the Soul Dimension, and she came to Sonic's world to find the Soul Emeralds, important items that Eggman Nega took from her. So, she sets out to find them across her journey.

She is joined by Cream the Rabbit and meets Amy, Knuckles and other Sonic characters, insisting that she asks Sonic for help gathering the Emeralds. But she refuses until she comes face to face with the Blue Blur, and they have a face off.

After a really intense fight (and your hand hurting after mashing Y over and over again :'(), they team up and in typical Dreamcast-Era Sonic fashion, you gather the Emeralds for both characters to turn super and fight the Eggmen.

I really like her character and her design is very striking. She is a great contrast to Sonic and I really like the dynamic she has with everyone. She interacts with Sonic more in Rush Adventure but for this game, she and Sonic form a nice friendship.

Eggman Nega is......well, another Eggman :l. Is there really anything else to add to that XD?

Presentation is interesting, as Sonic is famous for pushing the hardware he is on. Sonic Advance and Sonic Battle have some of the best sprite work on the GBA, so Sonic must impress on the DS, right :D?

i58QBopZEFcNq.gif

He does, with 3D models against 2D backgrounds but it looks really nice and blends well. The animations for Sonic and Blaze are detailed to and this shown during 3D boss fights after clearing two acts in each zone.

They are a visual marvel for the DS and they are in 60FPS (I think....); very impressive considering the DS was still only a year old!

Music is something I'm a bit mixed on. One one hand, its really great to see the Jet Set Radio composer getting more work! This is his first hand working on Sonic and it doesn't disappoint :).

It sounds nothing like Sonic.....but that is what I love so much about this soundtrack. It sounds different from past Sonic games.....but it fits the series like a glove. The techno beats and odd vocals work so well with the various levels and this makes the OST a treat to listen too. Wrapped in Black is one amazing final boss theme honestly and Jeh Jeh Rocket is so damn catchy XD!

My only issue is.....well, I didn't like this OST when I was younger. It felt so odd to me when I first played it in 2005 but upon repeated playthroughs as I got older I fell in love with this soundtrack. It fits Sonic so well and its a shame the Rush Adventure OST sounds nothing like this.

It still rocks, but still, sounds different :).

The last thing to cover is the special stages and Sonic is the only one that runs through them.

You use the touch screen on the DS to move Sonic left and right......just like that original Sonic DS prototype. Maybe that was a test version of Rush's special stages? Nah.......

Anyway, they are a lot of fun and while they get harder, Dimps FINALLY makes getting into them easy :D! THANK YOU!

LHlcxCubXACrK.gif

All you have to do is fine a rainbow spinning thing in a act and once you latch on, hold the Boost button until Sonic flies into a portal. You need at least one full boost bar (you can have up to three) to get into the special stages but still, much MUCH easier to get into.

Dimps only got better with special stages as the DS and 3DS games went on so, kudos to them for listening to feedback people gave them over the BS you went though in Advance 2 and 3.

- - - - - - - - -

Overall, I love the Rush series :). It does so much right and its so much fun, that you can fly through zones in one sitting if you want to :D.

One of the best 2D Sonic ventures out there and while it doesn't compare to the Genesis games or even Advance 1, I love the game the same way I love Advance 2.

Its a game that does something different and creative with the 2D Sonic formula but like Advance 2, it does that very well :). At least I think it does :D!

Before we collect some secret rings, we are going to fly in the sky with one final non-Sonic Sonic Team adventure; Ristar!

Great game. A ton of style and one of the few games I'm aware of that uses samples in it. I've always loved sonic for the way it does its music, and this game is a prime example of it.

This was how i expected a successful Sonic series to play out, and i'd love to see more sonic games in this vain

Nice OP! Forgot about that button mashing scene. Rush is definitely a great entry in the series although I think I'm slightly more fond of the adventure games.

Was going to write about the beloved marine the raccoon but realized they don't appear until rush adventure.

Don't worry, will cover her when I get to it ;). I also wonder if Sticks is just Marine but with a different name and style......both look so similar to each other XD!

I loved Sonic Rush. It was a breath of fresh air to the 2D Sonic scene. Sonic Rush, Mario Kart DS and Super Mario 64 DS made for a damn good Christmas 2005. I which Blaze was utilized more, she's an awesome character with an awesome design and attitude.

The first 2 year of owning a DS was amazing :').

Mario 64 DS, Wario Ware Touched, Sonic Rush, Mario Kart DS, Mario and Luigi Partners in Time (.....I think it came out in 2005....), Kirby's Canvas Curse (one of my favorite Kirby games ever)......such a great handheld the DS was :).

All time favorite game series + all time favorite composer. Loved this game so much. We really need a Rush 4. Dimps was on a roll with the portable games.
Until Generations, ironically...

Generations was a rushed game (as they only got a year to make it) and Lost World was.....I liked the 3DS version but it clearly had a number of issues :(.

This game was so much fun, fast paced but still felt slow enough to be in control. I've never played Sonic '06, but I remember watching a little of Silver's story and Blaze's lack of response when Sonic came up. I thought to myself "You are supposed to know him! Sonic Rush came before this! Why are you in the future anyway?"

Sonic Rush was f****** amazing! It was everything I wanted in a Sonic game and that soundtrack, dear God that soundtrack! Those chaos emerald stages were tough though, I seem to remember.

This was my first DS game, I bought it on a whim and I'm really glad I did.

Loved this game. One of my favorite DS titles. I remember championing this title as one of few good Sonic games out there during dark periods, lol. This game made me realize that yes, I love boosting. Music is awesome. Just a great game.

Oh yeah can't forget, Blaze is awesome. One of the best additions to the franchise.

Sonic Rush (and Adventure) are probably one of the very few Sonic games I've actually enjoyed. Just seemed to click with me in a manner that the other Sonic games didn't.

I don't understand a single word in Jeh Jeh Rocket, but I freakin love that song.

Here are the lyrics. They're as deep and methodical as you think they would be.

Oh right, Colors did come out a year earlier. And they're too busy managing Street Fighter V to do another Sonic portable game right now. This sucks.

Sonic Rush is my favorite Sonic game. It's a good game, but the music elevates it to another level. No one composes like Naganuma.

So it really is Chao rapping XD! Thanks for that man :').

And yah, Colors DS came out in 2010 and its rumored that was a version of Generations (hence all of Sonic's friends appearing in the game). So, they really didn't have enough time to make Generations 3DS a great game sadly :(. Still decent but not as good compared to past DS Sonic's.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a 3DS version of the anniversary game, considering Lost World came out in 2013 and they could of been working on it since 2014. But with SFV being worked on and Fire & Ice coming out in Sept. for the 3DS, not expecting that to happen.

Sonic Rush was good but I played Rush Adventure first and I liked it more. Those mini-stages were fun :) Waiting for your SRA thread now.

I really enjoyed Rush Adventure myself :).

The wait may be a while (got to cover a few games first before covering Rush Adventure) but it should be up within a week or so :D.

If that's the case, and as much as I love Colors DS (I actually like it more than the Wii version, but that's a discussion for a later thread), I would've rather they sacrifice the DS version and put Dimps on Generations a little after Sonic Team started.

HIDEKI NAGANUMA DA GAWD

Honestly as much as I like the music, gameplay, and style of this game...I cannot stand the level design of the later levels. Bottomless pits everywhere. Classic Dimps design.

but I don't want to put a damper on the thread...this game is good. I should give this game another chance in the future.

I already made the Sonic Colors Thread, but if you are referring to Generations.....that is going to be covered last.

I loved Colors Wii but I could easily see why you would like the DS version; gutting the three extra acts does a lot to make the game 'feel' faster compared to the Wii version.

You aren't dampering anything! Rush has problems with its level design but that gets fixed in the other Rush Trilogy games (Rush Adventure and Colors DS) as time goes on :).

To my shame I was never able to beat that final boss. His last bits of health where the platform is so small. -_-
That gif I see there just brings up the burning desire to go back and give it another crack... as well as the mental trauma of trying for hours and getting worse at each attempt.

The game is a blast though. It felt old school yet fresh somehow.

Yeah I've heard that over time but forgot. I need to play all the DS Rush games, especially Sonic Colors DS. No one talks about that!

Also Blaze is a really cool character in this.

I actually feel like this game nailed the classic style of Sonic soundtracks better than any other game. I'm not much of a music expert, but hopefully this is clear enough to explain what I mean.

Since Masato Nakamura and Michael Jackson, both pro musicians outside video games, had their hands in the original Mega Drive games, you can tell there's a ton of influence from late '80s/early '90s pop, hip hop, and R&B to give it a kind of "cool" sound. Tracks like Spring Yard Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, Hydrocity Zone, and Lava Reef Zone really epitomize this.

Naganuma's work on both JSR and Sonic Rush, with all its samples, iconic, repetitive riffs and funky beats, is the closest the series has ever come to capturing that same hip-hop esque, streetwise, funky sound that the original games created.

Fantastic game. My favorite Sonic game besides the classics on Megadrive and Generations on PC (60fps makes a huge difference, sorry but it's true guys).
Shame about the overproduced sequel tho, much much weaker game.

I also enjoyed Generations on 3DS (also by Dimps).

Grabbes Colors for DS a few weeks ago but still have to play it. Heard good things.

Sonic Advance 2 is one of my most played Sonic games. (I was a kid!) Maybe it'll be nostalgic to fire up Sonic Rush, a game I've never played (except maybe a demo?). I never knew it was a model. Those artistic decisions become more apparent in retrospect. At the time people may not have made a big deal about it. Now it just looks like a cheesy way to save money on animating sprites. (See New Super Mario Bros. DS.)

The core gameplay is an evolution of Advance 2, where the R Action ability and Sonic's Boost ability being fleshed out into major mechanics.
1. Do you rank the Sonic games anywhere? Will that come later?
2. I thought you said you had a blog, but I couldn't find it. Is there anywhere you're posting these where people can see all the retrospectives at once?

Really fun game. Absolutely love the soundtrack. Wish there were more out there like it.

It'd be nice to hear Naganuma's work in a modern/current gen game. I'm sure he could do great things if given the chance.

The only 2D Sonic to ever appeal to me other than S3 & Knuckles.

Ordered Rush Adventure because of this thread. Hope it's as good as this one was. Was disappointed that they seemed to reboot the character of Blaze for Sonic 06 instead of going with the story they started here (but, as we all know, that was only one of many problems with that game). Sad that 06 effectively killed off Blaze and her role in the series, as well. I think she was the only genuinely good new character introduced to the franchise since Adventure 2.
