Star Fox Zero - Video from review copy + plus Falco amiibo unlock revealed

This would be terrible. Usually when you silience the gamepad most sounds get sent through tv.

Yeah, I thought turning the volume completely off on the gamepad would automatically play any gamepad sounds through the TV instead. Is this really not a global feature, but case by case per game?

Pretty sure it's case by case. You don't even get all the game audio automatically when you plug in headphones, it's up to the devs (lookin at you WWHD and Xenoblade X). Hope that changes for the NX.

You can expect previews next week.

FINE! I'll just figure out something else to do until then.

I'm replaying Captain Toad and these mine carts levels where you have to look at the gamepad to launch radishes felt similar to how I imagine SFZ feels. It hit me that I can see some potential for fun with this control scheme.

Do you have Nintendoland? Replay some Metroid Blast as the Gunship. Also a good case for it (and it used to be a Star Fox attraction before they changed it to Metroid anyway so ... kinda funny now :D).

This is one of the most intriguing games of the year for me. I don't think it will be received well, but it looks right up my alley and I'm excited about it.

Why is Nintendo still using the Wii Sports font (aka the Nintendo font)? I......still don't like it and now all the SF characters dialogue use it :p

I do! It's been a while since I played Blast since I don't remember it being much fun single player, but I think I'll give it a go in a bit actually.

It fits into dead genres, there's nothing like it out there in the current market and has actual level design in a space shooter. What happened to that awesome genre?

Military FPS games took over. :)

The story fixation of the industry meant that you needed to relate to human white males so the FPS filled that action/cinematic shooting hole better than these games.

Well, it is the Nintendo font nowadays. Give it another few years and it will be as memorable as this one:

I urge everyone to look forward to hearing Star Wolf theme.

Just got done playing some Metroid Blast and it was pretty fun aside from a little shoulder fatigue. I wonder if there are going to be vehicles in Federation Force.

Yet Tie-Fighter created a better narrative and relevance to "humans" than most games to this day. A true shame indeed.

Someone has uploaded to youtube the map screen theme:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDIFGAqVGfk

It's just amazing! I love how most of the music that we have heard is essentially new, with this being a game where it would have been so easy just making remixes of old themes.

I was going to say I thought there was an embargo, but then I saw his about page says "No Copyright Law in the Universe is going to Stop Me!"

No fucks (fox) given, apparently

TIL! I was thinking it was always supposed to be a Metroid mini-game since Tanabe discussed dual-POV ideas for Metroid way before Miyamoto expressed them as a staple for new Star Fox.

The uploader also says on Reddit that he cannot say how he obtained the tracks.

Many good ideas start small until they reach fruition. They're like apple trees almost.

I do hope for that dual POV metroid and what they could do with that idea. It sounds utterly fascinating.

Okay, I'm now sold. If this is going to be my only gaming purchase this year, then I have to make it count!

Star Fox Zero OT - "You're becoming more like your father."
Star Fox Zero OT - "Just what I needed to see. Slay Fox."
Star Fox Zero OT - "Just like old times, huh, Fox?"
Star Fox Zero OT - "Ah, you're gettin' better with usin' Motion Controls, Fox."
Star Fox Zero OT - "Team Star Fox, ready for duty!"

I proposed Star Fox Zero OT - "The Fox Awakens" a while back. I think its fitting, giving the re-imagining focus on the game.

Yes, save for something out of the ordinary happening, it should get crushed by the critics of the "product reviews" sites.

This is a good one.

Just finished editing and uploading the footage I'll be sharing early next week. I think most will like what they see.

Cool! Is the Falco amiibo stuff (whether it's required to unlock the mode) going to be talked about this week or was that a completely broken embargo leak?

Yeah being a short $60 game built for replay value likely doomed the game in the eyes of the product critics.

I hope the idea of being focused on replay value at least enables them to see the strengths in the level designs.

Here's the full quote on that btw:

"Generally it was easy to match the gameplay from the prototypes with one series or another," said director Yoshikazu Yamashita. "For example, a game with air and ground battles works well with Metroid. There was a time when Metroid Blast was going to be a Star Fox title, but the prototype featured this vehicle that hovered around like a helicopter and we figured that'd never be a good match for an Arwing."

Funny how we now have a "helicopter" that "hovers around" in Star Fox Zero ;)

Fully expecting that as well. Lots of bad "sf zero out of ten" puns, etc.

Arcade style games in general fell out of favor. It's very hard to convince people to pay $50-60 for a 2 hour game anymore (even if that leaves out the replayability factor).

I'm bullish on this game. I think it will be the new Starfox we have been waiting for.

Adding to that there's the "small" issue of the controls and having to get used to a new type of interface. Which we know is something that is loved by game reviewers and lotzs of gamers in general XD

The Gyro Wings is doing nothing for me so far. Don't like that little clumsy and slow robot. Has they attached a fast Spider Claw to it, would have been a lot more interesting.

Great, looking forward to previews. The only question remaining for me at this point is whether I have to go buy the amiibos or not. Can't wait to play it.

Well, we already know what they do.

edit: I guess you mean if the retro mode and black arwing can also be unlocked in-game.

It's interesting how I really want to get some more info about it, like I'm absolutely addicted to it. It has been a long time I felt like this. This game still feels like a mystery and I still don't know what is really going on in this game and how it will be like.

Would anyone like to see a hub world in a Star Fox game?? Nothing too fancy, but maybe something like the Comet Observatory in Galaxy... I dunno, maybe talk to the rest of your flock, upgrade parts of your ship (e.g. offense/ defense parts), etc.

Battlestar Galactica is what I want!

Falco getting into fights with the crew of the Great Fox, Slippy having an affair with a shuttle pilot. Peppy getting into politics. Fox wise-cracking in mission briefings. Then the alarm goes off. ACTION STATIONS ACTION STATIONS, THIS IS GREAT FOX ACTUAL. LAUNCH ARWINGS! And then you hustle to the launch bay and go through the whole launch sequence :D

That sounds like what Nintendo tried to make with Star Fox Command but ultimately failed :D

Damn it why isn't the first Star Fox on eShop. Is the SNES cartridge the only way to play? Now THAT would make a glorious unlockable in SFZ.

Same for me, it's about time a game like this came out. A game with focus on a couple varied levels. A game that won't be such a time investment to return to.

SFX chip rights ownership issues is the common story going around the grapevine. Hence Yoshi's Island also not being on there.

Unless they resolve that or do an actual port of the original so it can be an unlockable, it won't ever happen. You're playing it on a SNES or not at all (ignoring emulation).

This could be awesome, like a smaller, more intimate Star Citizen. Only with that perspective, it would actually be achievable unlike SC's bloated ambition that seems to be going too far out of control.

The Star Fox SNES style mini-games in WarioWare Smooth Moves was such a tease.

Small follow-up: I actually wouldn't want that all the time, just once or twice in the game maybe :D

But on the other hand, I could see it as a true advancement of Star Fox 2. A 2D map of the lylat system becomes a 3D world map with all the implications therein. Instead of a whole galaxy, focus down on a single star system.

Well maybe if Star Fox Zero becomes a huge succ-- oh .... :(

And sadness sets in. It seems that idea would be unlikely anyway and it seems more like an idea for AAA market. Miyamoto seems more interested in a smaller, more intimate idea for Star Fox rather than a grand massive vision. I can appreciate that because of the constant emphasis on the massiveness of worlds in this day at the expense of intimate level design.

If it's like Samus' ship from Metroid Blast then it would be no problem. I learned how to pilot her ship quickly.
Don't mean to pick on you and I anticipate being pretty good with the controls as well, but could it not be that learning to use the controls is really difficult and takes days and it's also a great game? I see this stuff posted all over these boards: Is it intuitive? Doesn't the second screen just make it harder? Would playing it with a "normal" controller make more sense? What if it's intentionally difficult?

I like the idea that the controller can be part of the action and puzzle gameplay. The screenless analog pad is fine but it's just one solution, we don't have to compare everything to it. Maybe learning a new interface is part of the fun, and even if the benefits are withheld for a couple hours, they are worth the journey. Even if it's just a smirk when you are aiming on one screen and your frined yells out for something they saw on the tv--why can't that be enough?

The two screen interface may not be an interesting addition to every game, but it makes lots of sense to me to be able to move and aim on two different planes, and I think if it takes weeks or months to learn to play it then that's my kind of challange. When's the last time you had the feeling you were playing with a new system? I miss that.

I wish that attitude had been more prevalent in every gamer's mind and also especially the press during the whole Wii (U) era. You could really tell when someone went from playing 90% of the time with a "normal" controller and suddenly had to play their one Wii game per year and it all became about "dealing" withe Wii Remote and later the GamePad.

Disappointed they still haven't gone back to the musical style of the first Star Fox. I'm was never a fan of the SF64 music and this definitely sounds similar to that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVFgTjwwBH0

Have some SNES tunes my friend.

Edit: On the topic of controls, this is my main complaint with 3rd person action games, they're too afraid to change the controls. Remember Tank Controls? Tedious as they were, they enabled a really interesting design in the Resident Evil games. "Dealing with it" is a means for inspiring overcoming and advancing control. Afterall, a person who can manage it better than another is a more skilled player than another at the game.

Thank you. And now we have VR and it's not treated as a gimmick even though it shares lots of the same ideas, and is arguably less cool (thinking of the average cool person watching someone play). Actually, I'm glad people are investing in VR, just disapointed they didn't in U as well.

You can watch people play on the TV.
