"What do you expect? The leak is being managed by the grandly but laughably named “International Consortium of Investigative Journalists”, which is funded and organised entirely by the USA’s Center for Public Integrity. Their funders include

Ford Foundation
Carnegie Endowment
Rockefeller Family Fund
W K Kellogg Foundation
Open Society Foundation (Soros)"

Fucking Soros.
But on the plus side of that, if Trump is involved he's definitely getting outed.

Read this name sometime before in this thread. Did a quick read about Soros on Wikipedia, but how exactly is Soros linked to the elections?

dude is just one billionaire, but people act like he's niccolo machiavelli himself. he's more of an adelson level money spreader than a koch brothers level political organization builder

Holy shit.

Wtf at Canada compared to the U.S. Adjusting for population, Canada is a dump.

What?! I can't believe that. I've had some strong suspicions about my province's premier and there's the entire senate, also plenty of idiot MPs to make it onto this list. I think they will show up in an update.

Well I would have just expected CBC/Radio-Canada to list them right away, like they did with the previous leak they had worked on a few months back.

Yes. This is pleases me greatly. I hate the fact that wealthy people succeed at hiding their money, which could be used to help less fortunate people.

Hope that countries where implicated people are, put their tax collecting agencies to work.

I doubt it'll make a splash in Belgium. Luxleak didn't. What's worse is that the EU told Belgium some tax loophole was illegal and companies owe our state 700 million in taxes and the current Finance minister won't claim them, stating it'd be too complicated.

Argh, absolutely maddening. Sounds more like there's a lack of will within the government.

I'm not even surprised with the FIFA part. Didn't the ethics commission receive gold watches from Brasil after the cup or something along those lines?

The worst part is that the budget isn't balanced and guess where they're making the cuts.

Either social services or said tax collecting agency?

Wow disgusting. All of the conspiracy theories don't sound so far-fetched now...

I expect someone to come out of the woodwork and say that a massive tragic event will happen any day now to take the heat off this news.

The first one. The argument is that asking for the money would cost us more because companies would stop doing business here, but I don't know how much validity that claim has.

1 politician being brought down is literally the least that could happen from these leaks.

I actually do wonder what's going to happen to Teflon Putin though.
Probably nothing. Too much uncertainty. The author couldn't even prove anything beyond just speculation of what could be. I don't doubt it at all but this is no smoking gun.

Though the president’s name does not appear in any of the records, the data reveals a pattern – his friends have earned millions from deals that seemingly could not have been secured without his patronage.

It's another Putin "probably" ordered Litvinenko killing. Just speculation but not actually showing any real proof.

I'm also very skeptical of no Americans implicated in this whole thing... also, to my knowledge, the Guardian hasn't published anything about UK PM Cameron's father being mentioned in the Panama Papers yet. That's pretty strange.

Yeah, I think that's the problem of depending too much on foreign capital. I'm sure someone else from EconomicsGAF can explain it.

Nobody will care. This sort of scandal is harder for people to wrap around than other popular scandals.

This leak is Soros and company taking jabs at people they don't like.

I don't mean the unwashed masses I'm more curious as to the people in charge of taxation and the like and how they will "react" to these documents. They'll have to at least look like they're doing something.

Man, I am getting really excited to see which US political figures end up implicated in this in the weeks/months ahead.

Schadenfreude is legit, people

He must be thinking this is worst than the one about the pig head

I'm curious if Steve Bell can outdo his pig head cartoons as this story unfolds. Some of those were classic.

Americans don't need to use Panama
They can setup trusts in Nevada etc

This one firm is just a tiny piece of a huge industry.

Pretty much.

Can these news organization please dig up the info on the Pakistani PM? That corrupt asshole does not deserve to be in a PM position.

actually since there are 800 australians and so on and so forth of course there will be a ton of americans involved including public figures. It'll just take time to unpick some names and write about them without getting sued for libel.

I hope this will get the coverage it deserves and will make things move. I'm not too optimistic however...

Interesting how apparently not everything was known about the Jinkins, although not a surprise.

I wonder if Messi didn't end up on it because of his father, damn he looks shady as hell.

Of course I'd find Chomsky in this thread. When do we begin anarchy?

Should offer all the involved people the chance to make this right, like a 70-80% tax rate on this money should be enough.

Argh, absolutely maddening. Sounds more like there's a lack of will within the government.

It is more like one specific minister who rather wants to blame his own department for the fact he can't count. It should be noted that this would go to one specific subdepartment which can perform very well without political support and does so anyway. But this should make a splash big enough not to matter in general

Three of the peruvian candidates for presidency appear on the leak

-Keiko Fujimori (daughter of the 7th most corrrupt president)

- Alan Garcia ( ex- president)

- Pedro Pablo kuczynski ( apparently the leaks reveal some shaddy bussines practices done in favor of lobby)

This is really amazing to witness. I love good journalism.

I think deep down we all knew this. Capitalism is a shitty system. Too bad there is no good alternative until money becomes obsolete.

I love how we seem to be pointing at Putin in the Western media, when most of the people on the list are in our backyards. Cameron's dad is on there too lol. My own country has loads of mailbox companies and is has been a safe haven for tax evasion for years. (Netherlands)

Yeah I was about to write the same thing.
I love this from the BBC:
Tax lawyer Jo Maugham QC says Mossack Fonseca's clients chose to use Panama for a reason.

"What Panama has offered – its USPs in the competitive world of tax havenry – is an especially strict form of secrecy, a type of opacity of ownership, and (if the reports of backdating are correct) a class of wealth management profession some of whom have especially compromised ethics. You go to Panama, in short, because, despite its profound disadvantages, you value these things.

And the question you should be asking is, what is it about this Mr X or that Mrs Y and his or her financial affairs that causes them to prioritise secrecy or opacity or (if the reports are correct) ethically compromised professionals above all else?

Perhaps it is not because the behaviour is criminal: tax evasion or money laundering or public corruption. Perhaps it is not. But – and especially in the case of Panama – very possibly it is."

I am following this, as I find it incredibly awesome to have access to such data.

On the other hand, I am a bit confused as to why there is not much mention of the involvement of the father of the PM of UK anywhere on media such as Guardian, BBC, etc.

my workplace... lol

I have to wonder about the ATO reaction, it seems they rushed to a press release saying, in effect "on it", rather quicker than they actually will trouble people with slippery accountants and lawyers on retainer.

ATO: we've information you are the beneficial owner of a company in Panama
Taxpayer: oh yeah, perhaps, I've complex affairs, however it was never used.
ATO: we think it may have been
Taxpayer: prove it.

So then at that point, what next?
Yeah they can place the taxpayer on a shit list and watch them more carefully they can come in an do a desk audit (even though that seems a rare thing now) but if the artful dodger didn't do anything really traceable onshore I don't see it as being much of a problem for them. It isn't like the banks and Panama are going to cough anything up more easily today than they would have yesterday.

It's of course a huge problem for public figures, politicians, and so on. Like the PM in Iceland.

This is kind of funny.

David Cameron is due to host a major summit to discuss the issue of offshore tax havens in May. More than half of the 300,000 firms listed as Mossack Fonseca clients were registered in British-administered tax havens.

"I'm shocked, shocked to find that tax dodging is going on in here!"

Is there any way to full text search the stuff? Is it all publicly available now?

Also somewhat off topic, but is that Hide Your Pain Harold?

Im interested if any US presidential candidates will be involved inthese. Direct or indirect through association or whatever. Trump and Hillarys circle within the rich is probably so big someone can find a way to link them to this.
