Why are the character designs in this much better than in the game. Would prefer to play with the characters in the movie too be honest.

Love the faces
It's still too much of a sausage fest
Need more of that hot biker girl
Is she related to the banging one from the E3 trailer I wonder

Here is an exclusive picture of Noctis from KINGSGLAIVE: FINAL FANTASY XV

You're not alone. Several of us here have pointed that out.

Hope Nyx is at least playable as DLC at some point.

Looks really pretty. This type of hyper-real CGI always ages poorly, but for now this is some gorgeous stuff.

I expect it to be fully incomprehensible plot-wise, but whatever

Don't you guys have enough protagonists that look like Nyx already? Do you really need more of them? Including in the only high profile Jrpg left over here?

Swear, this looks better than some Hollywood CGI flicks. Just pre-ordered my FFXV Deluxe Edition with this Bluray included :>

LOL, and Japanese RPGS have a lot of protags that look like Noctis(prettyboys), so what's the point? Hell, y'know what, give me a JRPG where the main character's gruff and Western-looking, and give me a WRPG where the main character's a prettyboy-type! Think outside the box every once in a while, regions! It's fuckin' fun and interesting when you do so! Sadly, the most "out of the box" Western fantasy got was in the 80s, which probably would align best with JRPG sensibilities. Maybe we need a resurgence of Western 80s flair for that creativity to get flowin again and take us out of this grimdark fantasy realm we've been in since the late 90s/early 00s!

Nyx looks like a Japanese take on western design concepts, which is why he's so visually appealing. While the overall design looks like a western hero, there's a few concepts that add a unique visual flair that most western devs wouldn't put on their characters:

zgLI3Ax.png

It's only a few details, but they matter. He doesn't just look "western": Nyx looks like a western Final Fantasy character. It's that blend between aesthetics that's resonating with people, I think. It's the same reason the Resident Evil protagonists look so cool - they look overall "American" but have little details like Leon's bangs or Jill's campy beret that evoke the more stylized look common in Japanese media.
This plus Agni are the kind of designs Square needs to be drumming up for their Final Fantasies.
I feel like they wanted Luna to resemble Lena Headey albeit loosely, but I think there's a similarity in face structure.

No doubt they do, the point is we don't get many of them anymore (that aren't shit) because the bottom fell out of the Japanese console industry. Meanwhile undercuts, 5 o'clock shadows, a hoodie-with-benefits and dual-wielding weapons is every other game dude on tv. They're both stereotypes, but one is disappearing from AAA gaming a lot faster than the other.

I like your proposal of W and JRPGs mixing up designs with eachother, but it's been one way traffic for years and that doesn't look like changing. So I'd like to have my stereotypical Japanese prettyboy in a AAA JRPG while I still can.

I feel like Hollywood hasn't bothered with fully cg films that have a realistic aesthetic for while. At least, I don't remember the last one that tried it. Instead the majority of output in that regard sticks closely to the cartoony stuff, the likes of which Pixar or Disney produce.

What's cool is that they changed Ardyn the least because he has universal appeal. Ardyn is easily the best design in the game. Loved seeing more of him this week.

Is this sarcastic? If it weren't for the red hair, he'd be unrecognizable. Major downgrade.

What the heck? Fantasy based on reality.

Go with the real woman. Little girls/dolls are nowhere near as attractive or worthy of empathy.

she looks anaemic like she hasnt seen sunlight for 10 years, still implying Luna in the game looks like a little girl better get your eyes checked.

Of course Nyx isn't the protagonist of a JRPG, but a movie. The unspoken rule of JRPG is the protagonist cannot have beard. He looks really badass though.

Luna also looks more like an adult woman in Kingsglaive as opposed to a cutesy young anime girl in game. If Square Enix wants to appeal to the west, transfer the design over to the game.

Won't happen with XV but I definitely hope to see the Kingsglaive look in Final Fantasy's going forward, starting with XVI.

How does she look like a cutesy anime girl? She's cute yes, but she's not much older than early 20s. Her CG render makes her look older than she is...plus sort of anemic too.

She's better looking in-game.

You know who looks like a cutesy anime girl? Ardyn.

She's better looking in-game.

She's designed to look as close to an anime doll as possible while still maybe being passable as a human being. She'd fit right in with XIII's cast.

Kingsglaive Luna looks much more like a person. And there's plenty of women in their early 20's with that kind of facial structure.

I think the jarring thing is the circles under her eyes, but maybe it's deliberate.

Hmm, the Luna character looks pretty different. I was fine with the original look - she looks prettier than the CG one, who still obviously is good looking - but I am fine with what the have come up with. Funny that she looks older though...And weird that they don't seem to value consistancy...

Also, the vg luna doesn't look anime. She just looks like an ideolized version of current perceptions of western/asian beauty.

I love Ardyn already. Best waifu.

I hope so, too! Who designed Nyx, btw?

If I were to guess, Roberto Ferrari.

I wonder who the rest of the mocap cast is (has Regis' actor been posted here?). I'm guessing they must have done the capturing overseas which is why nobody looks Asian anymore :(

... Well now I am, damn you.

Whoever his actor is, his eyes are reeeaaally close together.

Someone please tell me this isn't Japan only. I would take this instead of the deluxe edition

That box is SEX

I think the reason this looks so westernized is because SE wants to draw in a different kind of audience with the movie to buy into the FFXV universe and game. It's obviously a deliberate decision by them. I think that's what the FFXV compilation is ultimately trying to do by branching out to different mediums.

Absolutely, 100%. I see this as a low-barrier, low-commitment entry point for people who may be curious about the series (or just enjoy fantasy films) which doles out a trail of breadcrumbs to entice them into the game. Remember kids, the first hit is always free.

I would bet that the movie is not meant to be a profit-maker in and of itself, but more like a 70-minute commercial for the game
and for Audi
.

Aaron Paul said that they've been working on Kingsglaive for three years.

So the Insomnia invasion's been cut since 2013?

Thought so, too, and ff that's the case, even more reason to get him on board as the main character designer for future FFs, though the female designs better be done by someone else :D The only reasonable female design he's done so far in FFXV and Type-0 is Gentiana.

We never saw that Invasion in a real-time trailer so it is possible, yes. It was on the cards in early 2013 though judging from the E3 trailer.

Well I will give one thing to Square, they still know how to make stunning visuals, that looks incredible. I just hope the quality of the movie is up to the same standard (same goes for the game too)

Here's a shot of a couple background characters, posted by one of the freelance artists who worked on it. (did this appear in the trailer?)

AAEAAQAAAAAAAAUSAAAAJGMzOGVlZmNkLWJmMTMtNDM3YS04NTdhLTc0NDVjMTAzMzY5ZQ.jpg

It's interesting that there are a few women in the group seen sitting around Regis's meeting table, as well as in the "Mexican standoff" against Niflheim(and with floating swords in their command). To my recollection, in the original version, Regis's accompanying group were all men.

And though people pine for the "Yakuza" feel of Versus XIII, I'm actually liking this more. Yeah, Regis and some of his men still sport designer suits(you them in the meeting and the standoff), but you see a lot of him followers wearing really traditional medieval-like clothing. The way this game melds medieval traditions with modern cultures just fascinates me. I've always been a person that preferred settings consisting of more than one style over "JUST futuristic" or "JUST medieval". I love the experimentation of mixing culture, setting and such and seeing what becomes of it.

I know most would disagree, but I would actually much prefer FFXV itself used this more realistic art style :/

I'm liking this Luna more than the in-game one

I don't think so.

Overall, I'd bet a lot more people would be receptive to it as apposed to what we have now with what looks like a punky anime cosplayer at the forefront.

On the other hand, I probably wouldn't be as interested in the game if it didn't have an aesthetic so explicitly inspired by Japanese street fashion, since that's what I'm into. But I'd also be happy to see FFXVI ditch it for something else.

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion. The game's design are still very Anime (Luna looks like a doll) and I think the discrepancy is getting bigger the more realistic the overall art-style is becoming. FF should definitely look to Kingsglaive for future titles. Visual Works found a sweet spot here, imo.
