HTC Vive Launch Thread -- Computer, activate holodeck

It will be interesting to see just how much games get discounted, and how quickly. I suspect we may see small discounts of say, 10%, but not much more for awhile, specifically speaking on VR-only games.

For the games that are of lets say a higher quality like The Gallery or Vanishing Realms, the cost to develop those games isn't cheaper than other games, but the audience is way smaller; so they have to price themselves in a way that they can make some money.

Well, actually most of the highest profile Vive games at launch are on sale right now. Many things are 10-20% off.

I like the convenience of the rift built in headphones. Wonder if you could just sew some earbuds into the strap with a little slack to reach your ears

They actually took my money now (PayPal order). The order status page still gives me an error, though.

I'm not a fan at all. I like using my badass headphones with it. But after a couple of hours I started having a comfort issue due to the straps slightly covering my ear. I may try making the top strap shorter now that I have a better feel for where the goggles should sit on my face for the best picture.

Also, Audioshield is a magical game. I woke up thinking about it.

Doing an Audio Book on AudioShield is ultimate hardmode. Do it on hardest difficulty and prepare to have your arms die. No beat or music to really go to, and it goes on for hours. We did part of The Sum of All Fears last night as a goof, and good god it is monsterously difficult.

LOL.. I wouldnt even have thought of doing that. That's excellent.

I find the ear buds annoying, they feel wonky in my ears.

Really, you're gonna want to get a pair of wireless headphones for this.

I haven't tried the phone app, actually. I have it on my phone, but haven't tried linking it with the headset.

Any suggestions on good wireless headphones? Seriously considering getting some now.

EDIT: Actually I just remembered I have the Sony Wireless Gold headphones. That should be fine right?

I'd love to hear some impressions on the included earbuds and any info on the phone app and how that experience is

The earbuds aren't very good. I really like the included headphone jack, but the earbuds are cheap and come out of the ear very easily. The cord is quite short (which isn't necessarily bad, because the jack is right there), and since it's right next to the main cord coming out of the headset, they sometimes catch on each other, which will immediately pull one of the earbuds out.

This is actually a really cool idea. We should get some people together and see if we can put together an easy kit people can print off of shapeways or something.

I guess it depends on what qualifies as easy. Printing and assembling a dock would be relatively easy. You'd be dealing with big pieces and a simple design. People with even the most basic of soldering and assembly skills would be able to make it. The pad on the controller side, however, wouldn't be that nice. Smaller parts, smaller soldering contacts, and more exacting assembly.

That said, there's already plans for a direct USB dock solution, so I'll probably go with a modification (dual controller) of that route first and see how it works before I contemplate too much on a contact pad solution. Since the connector area is modular, I could simply modify it after the fact if I wanted to try a pad solution.

Funny thing is, HTC sells the earbuds for $80 standalone. Not that it means high quality though :p

JVC Marshmallows can be had for under $20 easily. I have been using them for years. They are kind of foamy so they fit directly in any ear and do a good job blocking out most of the outside noise as well. I use them on planes on the time because it reduces the engine noise greatly and if I happen to lose a pair traveling no biggie. I had a pair for over 7 years actually until one of my dogs found them. The sound is pretty good for what its is worth and they are made for exercising so.

You masochist you.

Also, I clicked on the song of the day and didn't know how to make it stop or close that Steam web browser menu. It was awful. Anyone know how to turn off the browser in SteamVR?

Also if I can't get the strap on the sides to feel more comfortable I'll just switch to my ultimate ears triple-fi 10's. I'd just rather not. Idk.

I want some weighted vive controllers. A little more heft for a bit better workout with audioshield and space pirate trainer.

Jeeboman is worth checking out. You'll spin in circles a bunch but once you get the hang of warping around to the different control points and double checking your orientation and you can see an enemy pop, warp to that platform, because you could see the enemy orientation, no look blast them in the face with a shotgun then warp out of there. I wish the guns were oriented more like a real gun but they double as shields and melee weapons.

Anyone know of any Youtubers (or games) that are experimenting on the locomotion front?

Would love to see some of their work on trying to solve the locomotion problem.

Is there a game that uses WASD (touchpad) to teleport short distances forward, left, back and right?

That could be a decent work around.

Like, press touchpad forward, cast a ray forward to check if there is an obstruction. If there isn't teleport the character the maximum distance (minus the capsule size). If there is an obstruction teleport the character to the hit point (minus the capsule size).

Give it a short cooldown and you can approximate the speed of walking in an open environment.

Watching this video of the tips on SteamVR and HTC Vive home
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpeW-lxccK0

it seems the HTC VIVE Home portal is a much nicer user interface ..i didn't realize it was seperate from steamvr home
I wonder if there's away to make that the default for Vive

The fact the home room is a 3d space you can move around in vs just the 360 degree photo could be awesome if people can build home environments

HTC chat couldn't tell me why the order status page gives me an error and just told me to call their support number.

What how? Did your payment get rejected before or something? I though all the orders through like :07-:09 were accounted for.

Not if you live in the strange time and space anomaly known as Illinois apparently.

:05 order here. Payment went through fine 8 days ago, yet no communication from HTC since.

Does anyone know how to actually close the steam web browser in SteamVR? I think I asked earlier but the question may have been missed. In Audioshield, playing the "song of the day" opens a browser window to places like Soundcloud. But if you don't like the song and don't want to continue, closing the browser is needed because the Vive controllers can't manipulate the play/pause button in Soundcloud. I'm sure there's an easy way to do it, but until you know it's just frustrating.

No I'm :06 and also nothing.

Maybe you needed to have escalated it. But it seems like they're doing it on a country basis or something.

Did you create an account by linking another (ie Steam, Facebook, etc) or did you create an HTC account?
I created an HTC account. My confirmation email said if you didn't use guest checkout to use your account password which isn't working. And I didn't pay by credit card so I can't use the other method.

Not rejected. Also shipping to Illinois. Right next to Indiana, where they're shipping from!

I had this problem and changed my password (by going to "Forgot my Password") and it started working for me. I had created an account by linking it through Steam though so it might not work for you.

Hmm, I'll try that out quick.

Edit: Nope, guess I'll try calling them.

Should my order history page in my profile change to something besides "Submitted" before it starts shipping?

Still no word on my order. I might have to cancel or otherwise risk it will get here while I'm traveling :-/

What's the source for that gif? I feel like I have seen it before but I can't put my finger on it, drives me crazy.

Of course! Had completely forgotten that even existed.

There's a good reason for that :p

Well I sympathize with the people that had their packages in limbo at fedex facilities close by, mine is about a 15-20 min drive from me but fairly sure it's being held till Monday delivery due to their rules. Frustrating! Gonna be a looooong weekend. Had another dream about opening the damn package this morning...

Why oh why can't I just pick it up early? I know why but screw the rules :grumble grumble:

edit: OH GOD IT SAYS ON TRUCK FOR DELIVERY DON'T TOY WITH MY EMOTIONS FEDEX

Another day another missed shipment. It's pretty sad that lots of us UK 00 - 04 minute CC pre-orders are still left in the dark (I'm an :02 minute), had no issues with my payment (they successfully put a hold on the money). Well.. time to do this whole dance again on Monday hoping it gets shipped then.

This is so incredibly disappointing.

Not even close. Things are way messed up. There are tons of :01s without a shipping notification. HTC was apparently doing it out of order until a day or two ago. I'm :03 and still waiting. Not to mention that shipping has slowed down since April 4th. If it doesn't pick up early next week it might be safe to say that all shipments will be delayed.

Like I said, man...we're the anti-Vive state.

Maryland has only gotten, I think, 3 confirmed shipments (per Reddit).

Did HTC ever specify the exact date you all were supposed to receive the Vive? Didn't they just say that shipments will start in April? Getting fed up of seeing this thread clogged up with shipment complaints...

Some people were "confirmed" as first wave shipments by support. Outside of that, it's just expectations.

Edit: confirmed in quotations because I don't view support statements on those sorts of things any more than educated guesses.

Complaints are legit. We were told that many could expect our Vive to arrive on the 5th. When that didn't happen customer service told many of us to expect them at different times, all days that have passed by without a shipping notification. As far as we can tell they were just lying to get us off the phone. They were also shipping out of order and (apparently) sending payments to banks incorrectly so that they were getting denied (then auto cancelling those orders). Lots of other screw ups, mostly minor though.

That said, the main problem here is that if people that ordered within the first minute pre-orders went live haven't received shipping notifications yet then I have my doubts they'll fill all of the orders expected to arrive in April.

And, with so many of us super excited for the Vive and still waiting for it to arrive, there's not much else to talk about. But if you're saying we're being whiny babies then, yeah, you're totally right!
