Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse coming to North America in Summer 2016

We can cross out June (TMS) and July . So either August or September for NA. At worst November for Europe.

Release data from P4DAN and P4AU seem to support that train of thought.
That's incredibly optimistic, it'll be November at the absolute earliest for the EU, more likely to be Spring 2017, and with a fair chance of digital only.

To be honest, with Fire Emblem, DQVII, DQVIII and Monster Hunter Generations all coming, it's not like I'll be desperate for it anyway.

does this game have sweet ass xylophone boss music too?

No but it has other types of good themes.

Also they should've named it SMT IV: The Dark Souls of Persona. Still has an A!

Anyway I wasn't worried about the localization...

It wouldn't be press-turn if it wasn't easy to break. SMTIV's atmosphere was wonderful, crazy to think they could improve on it.

I don't really see it crazy, Nocturne focused on the atmosphere much more than SMTIV. The crazy thing would be if the atmosphere was better or rivaled that of Nocturne.

I know this has been pointed out in this thread, but if the "Y u censor our games" crowd jumps on this, you can throw your head back and laugh.

Nocturne's atmosphere did nothing for me honestly, the whole end of the world thing didn't really feel like a big deal when most of the NPCs didn't care.

IV keeping humans around, having some cyberpunk elements, and a soundtrack that was somehow able to surpass Nocturne's amazing OST all helped to make the atmosphere stand out more to me. But to each their own I guess.

One of my most anticipated games of the year, and I can't play it because of Nintendo's absolutely fuckin retarded region lock bullshit....

Definitely looking forward to playing this. I was getting slightly
irrationally
worried that it wouldn't come west.

Going by the trailer, it seems at least the music will be as good as IV's.

Fucking finally! Although I'm kinda scared with the Summer release since it might get a bad release date.

Also, no issues for the price, that's going to be 50 Gold Coins on MyNintendo since I'm a digital only guy.

Thank goodness.

After the famously fast announcement and localization of SMT4: Vanilla I was starting to get legitimately worried that Nintendo or ATLUS wasn't interested in bringing this outside of Japan due to the subject matter.

Aren't SMT games generally rated M? Japanese developers releasing M rated games generally are far less constrained than the Japanese versions.

"ATLUS Y U NEVER HAVE EU NEWS?!"

Well, I'm glad you asked, angry internet poster. As has been the case many times, we are relying on a publisher/distributer in the EU for that, and it's not our place to announce it for the region unless we're doing it ourselves (see: Conception II, all our indie games,
SMTIV ;___;
etc.)

"Are we working on trying to get that sorted out?"

Of course we are, and have been, like all of our recent titles. But we don't have anything to announce. So, sorry, but there's no EU news yet.

#notlikeSMTIV

I already read this post. As a European SMT fan, I'm happy to know that you guys are working this. Thanks for clarifying all the confusion. I agree it's better not to say anything when nothing is clear. Hoping to read more and good news soon. We trust you Atlus.

I'm not sure the soundtrack surpassed Nocturne since they're both so different, while Nocturne's tracks were mostly atmospheric, SMTIV consisted of catchy tunes save for a few tracks.

If that skill affinity thing means we're back to the terrible filter / load / cancel of P3 and earlier I'm going to be very unhappy.

Is anyone else concerned about getting Megaten fatigue if they release this and Persona 5 too close together?
Persona 5 is not going to be in NA (not even to mention Europe) in the summer. Just can't see that happening. I would be surprised as hell if it came out in the summer in Japan.

Also SMT had pretty different atmosphere then Persona.

I do wish SMT 2 would release on iOS in the West. It's pretty cool to have SMT1 on my iPhone/iPad.

I'm not sure what you mean. The affinity system just means that certain demons have better or worse aptitudes with skills. You can still transfer all skills and can choose inheritance manually.

That's cool then. You'll probably favor affinity sklills but can round things out. Just as long as there's no reroll / reset crazy.

Like Strange Journey or SMT2 :p ?

You may want to read Victor Ireland's post in the Summon Night 5 thread about the EU publishing red tape. It sounds pretty complicated.

Will do, thanks. Might be interesting even if it's nothing new.

A lot worse? The Atlus situation is far from ideal in Europe, but these days it usually takes around 3 to 6 months for an Atlus-published game to come over (most of the via NISA). If Apocalypse releases in September/October in the US, then a EU release in February 2017 would be par of the course. I wouldn't call that a lot worse than November, but, hey, maybe my judgement is clouded by the utterly awful situation Europeans had a couple years ago. Compared to the past, we're living in heaven right now.

Atlus USA-published games of the last year with US and EU dates:

  • Odin Sphere: June 7th (US), June 24th (EU)
  • Stella Glow: Nov 17th 2015 (US), Mar 11th 2016 (EU)
  • Legend of Legacy: Oct 13th 2015 (US), Feb 5th 2016 (EU)
  • Etrian Untold 2: Aug 4th (US), Feb 12th (EU)
  • Lost Dimension: July 28th (US), August 28th (EU)
  • Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker: May 5th (US), Oct 30th (EU)
  • Etrian Dungeon: Apr 7th (US), Sep 11th (EU)

Of course, there's SMTIV which took an eternity to get a European release, but that's the one big exception of the rule, which shouldn't be used as a generalization for future releases. Especially since signs point to there being a publishing deal that eventually fell through.

As a bonus: Persona release dates. I list them separately, though, since these days they get released much quicker in Europe, because - duh - it's Persona. These games sell pretty well. So, I wouldn't base an estimate on Apocalypse's release on those games, but it's possible.

  • Persona Q: Nov 25th 2014 (US), Nov 28th 2014 (EU)
  • Persona Dancing: Sep 29th 2015 (US), Nov 9th (EU)
  • Persona Arena Ultimax: Sep 30th 2014 (US), Nov 21th 2014 (EU)

Eh. NISA and Koei Tecmo show that it's easily possible to release JRPGs in Europe and the US at roughly the same time (as in: a couple days later). Atlus doesn't have a proper presence in Europe, though, and thus is dependent on whatever free spot other publishers (usually NISA) can/want to give them. Among other things.

We could talk about Persona 4 Arena, the only PS3 game region locked and that took a year-long delay to come here, or SMT:DSO, that took nearly two years.
Obviously, while it's not as bad as the DS generation, 3-6 months (if you look at recent games, it's closer to 6 than 3, and by far) is still pretty bad in this age.
Nobody is really asking or expecting a week delay for western releases (only NA/PAL here) like nearly every big publisher around. At this point when it's a month delay, like most niche publishers (which SegAtlus isn't), it sounds like an excellent surprise!

Seriously, even a two month delay would look reasonable compared to the current schedule.
With a publisher as big as them, it's hard to find an excuse for:
- Not having any presence in Europe
- Being unable to deal with european publishers, big or small, making every release look as if it was the first time they were working together
- Not even translating the game in more languages when the delay is longer (would make sense to have english only releases if it was the same month)
- Not even confirming in press releases that it's coming to Europe later. Not to say "it'll come in 6 months", but not able to say if it'll be released at all, be it for their niche games or their big ones.
- Saying the situation is improving for Europe and they are working on it, but unable to show anything to prove it, or to talk about it apart from a "I swear!" comment here and there, amongst other jokes.

Seriously, I'm not shooting the messenger either, but if it looks like it, it's because this company really deserves it after all those years. It's hard to work on this, absolutely, but it's also ridiculous to see that happen time and time again in this age from something that is not similar to Nis, Xseed/Marvelous, Koei-Tecmo and countless others.

If an Atlus representative has some explanation or good excuse about it, sure, do it. Just stop saying something on the side and trying to get some pity, before having to repeat it every 6 months.

edit: to be clear, I'm not mad about this situation, just extremely disappointed and actually surprised this keeps happening. But hey, Atlus USA and Sega getting together was supposed to bring some good news? We're still waiting on the other side of the Atlantic.

Wonder if Paradise and Doomsday/Apocalypse difficulty will be a base option or will still be DLC.

How is the difficulty in this one? Better than SMTIV, I hope? (Difficulty curve, I mean, more than anything, since SMTIV was a breeze after a certain point, whereas I found that Nocturne and Strange Journey both stayed more consistent throughout).

With a publisher as big as them

I think I found where the source of your problems come from.

We're not a big company. At all. Minus a few admin and accounting people (and excluding our QA staff, who amount to maybe 10 people at max at any given time), there's maybe 30 people in production/marketing/sales working on multiple titles a year.

I like the colours and type effect on 'Apocalypse', and that it's been hand lettered (the 'p's are different) rather than using a spraypaint font. Fits the anarchy/peace symbol better that way. The font for 'Shin Megami Tensei IV' above it reminds me of the one from the Valkyrie Profile and Final Fantasy games. It's not quite the same, it's a more angular cut (more triangular extremities than the straight 90 degree lines of the FF font) but still very similar in style.

The green/red/White is a nice palette too.
