LTTP: Dark Souls: That one Archer Sucks

Even though I can do it with relative ease nowadays I still tense up when approaching that area on a new character. It almost made me quit the game on my first character. Another place that makes me anxious is the narrow walkways above the Painted World painting. Something about the height there and the lack of freedom of movement makes me uneasy.

To this day I've never solo'd Smough and Ornstein. I feel ashamed.

Six or so characters played through the game and I have yet to solo those jerks. It's pretty much the only boss I summon for anymore though.

I will go to my grave saying that the one critical flaw in Dark Souls' boss fights (besides Bed of Chaos as a whole) is the camera in the Smough and Ornstein fight. It just wasn't built to handle two massive threats at once.

I was trying to get into this again the other day. Still stuck at the Gargoyles. I'm learning from every encounter, but I'm so goddamn sick of having to make the run up to that rooftop and deal with those damn zombies for five minutes every 45 second attempt I make on the boss

That's the shortest boss run in the game (not sure which route you're taking, but there are two super close bonfires) so you might want to get used to the idea now.

I just discovered the Ash Lake and it's gorgeous

I wonder what percentage of players ever see that area. It's got to be small, right? I accidentally found it(Oh boy, let me tell you about how happy I was to find out that damned tree was an optional path and not the right way...) but I could easily see the majority of players not knowing about it unless they read a walkthrough.

Yeah, a friend told me about it and I'm certainly glad he did. I would never find that out on my own.

I couldn't agree more. I ended up using mouse and keyboard so that i can control the camera better and i beat them after i got used to the controls.

What did you think of the other DLC bosses? In particular,
artorias
and
manus
.
Artorias was a huge challenge and I ended up needing the rite of kindling to really stand a chance. Once I had more Flasks I was able to do pretty well against him using my Pyromancy.

Manus was a pretty awesome fight considering how big but also fast he was. I even
summoned sif
near the end of the fight and that was awesome as hell

Do this day I don't understand why the Anor Londo archers have reached this legendary status of difficulty. I remember thinking so many other parts of the game were harder. Just roll through the arrows...

10/10 game for the first half, after Anor londo though t is obvious they didn't had time to finish the game and the quality of the areas takes a nosedive, a flawed masterpiece.

Agreed, and I'm so glad to see that Dark Soul 3 avoids this issue. The quality keeps steadily increasing in that game

I just finished the game for the first time yesterday (been playing it the last couple weeks).

With Bloodborne having been my only "Souls" game, I found the bosses in Dark Souls to be a cakewalk, comparatively (only Gwyn and Smough/Ornstein gave me much trouble). Most of them also just weren't very good fights. Bloodborne was much stronger in that regard, and that seems to have carried over into Dark Souls 3 (at least in the early going!).

Dark Souls was just as challenging outside of the bosses, though, maybe a bit more so. There are more ways to die. Those archers did indeed suck!

Anyways, even in spite of the things that I think Bloodborne did better, I absolutely fucking loved just about every second of DS1. It's an amazing game. I really wish I had played it sooner. I wasn't even planning on getting DS3 right away because I wanted to put a little space between them, but as soon as I beat the game yesterday I rushed to the store and bought it. I love these games, keep giving me more!

So, I just beat the Gaping Dragon and ended up in Blighttown. WTF. all of that heart attack inducing Depths to get to a town I already got into 4 hours ago via another route. I'm so frustrated. Where do I need to go now? Is there something past Blighttown?

Granted, I'm coming back after a year of not playing, so the Depths venture was a good welcoming back party where I almost lost 40,000 souls...

Don't leave Bed of Chaos for last, it's terrible.

Your Drake Sword -> Lightning Spear progression is pretty typical for a new player, they definately put the Lightning Spear in Sen's to ensure you are doing at least half decent damage before you get to Anor Londo.

Well, you took the master key and broken the progression by going in Blighttown the back way - that's fine, but also a consequence of picking that starting gift.

You have to defeat the boss of Blighttown in order to progress the game, it is not an optional boss - after defeating it, the cutscene will tell you where to go next. If you haven't explored the upper part of Blighttown, from the entrance of the Depths down through the shanty town above the Swamp itself, it's worth doing so - there's a lot of great loot up there.

There's a mini-area beyond Blighttown, you should head there and beat the boss. After you ring the bell, go back to the surface.

Rolling through the arrows is just one part of the puzzle because then you actually have to fight him on a narrow ledge without falling off. They generally poise through all but the strongest of weapons and parrying is obviously a difficult skill to master so it becomes this instance of "screw up once and youre dead" with almost no room for error.

Of course most people try to block the arrows at first but thats a bad idea since they knock you back in the opposite direction your character is facing and since you want to press your character against the wall to not fall off you end up falling to your death. It's really not a fun encounter at all. Pretty stupid actually.

Thanks. I'm trying to do a mage/wizard, but I only have soul arrow and heavy soul arrow. So, in the interim I've been using a divine longsword and shield. Where/How do I get more spells?

I've played through Anor Londo twice and died only once against the archers.Ornestein and Smough on the other hand...

I love Dark Souls and even like post-Anor Londo stuff.

Have you rescued Griggs from Lower Undead Burg? He's locked in a house there which you open by buying the key from Undead Merchant up above in Undead Burg.

Once freed he will go back to Firelink Shrine and sells spells and other stuff that comes in handy. Also you can buy another set of Soul Arrow and Heavy Soul Arrow from Rickert the merchant at the start of New Londo Ruins (near the gate that lets you go to Blighttown the back way). You can equip multiple of each spell, so could have 60 or even 90 Soul Arrows after seeing both these NPCs, but I would start using mainly the higher damage spells now. Griggs will also tell you about someone very important, you don't want to miss him if you're a magic-user!

btw, the Divine Longsword gets a damage boost from the Faith stat, so you would be better off upgrading a weapon to Magic, which is done by Rickert also, the sword will then scale with your intelligence stat, so the more you level up INT the stronger your spells become and also the higher the damage bonus you get from any weapon you have upgraded to Magic (any regular +5 weapon, then you need green titanite shards to make it magic).

I have 60 soul arrows so I know I bought some from the back way.
My int is 35ish now. Just keep dropping points there? Going to see if I rescued Griggs yet.

I've been playing this for the last month and stopped at the Bed of Chaos yesterday. Truly, truly great game that I have enjoyed more than most titles in the past few years and has convinced me to get Dark Souls 2 not long after I'm done.

That being said I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who had an issue with that one damn archer on the way to the bonfire. I think it was my sixth try that the stupid bastard wound up walking off the ledge himself and I practically praised the sun myself.

Blighttown and the Tomb of Giants can both eat my ass though.

You are probably getting caught up when the second gargoyle joins the fight and making the mistake I did. I kept trying to focus on the one that was attacking me and dodging the fire when in fact you should be targeting the one breathing fire. They are stationary and vulnerable and make an easy target.

From down by the forge, I run up through the main entrance, up the stairs, kill the the knight then have to deal with like 12 zombies before I can make it up to the gargoyles. Yeah I just might not be able to get into this. A lot of the game seems based around exploiting gamey aspects in a way I'm struggling to enjoy, from the emphasis on kiting to the idea of just running through enemies to get to the other side

Dont block, dont lock on and two hand your weapon. Always, always, sprint towards them and go straight for their tail. As soon as they turn to face you, nope them and again sprint for their tail again. Stay ultra aggressive and just be relentless on their tail.

Funny typo aside, I don't get how the 4K is a war of attrition. It's the opposite of that, pretty much a DPS race.

Yeah, haha.
Yeah that's moooore what I meant but couldn't come up with the words. I fund it fun to feel like I needed to do as much damage as possible to them before the next spawned

The fact that (mostly) everyone knew which archer the title of this thread was referencing before reading it is a testament to how memorable the game is. Honestly, I've not had such a great shared experience with other gamers with any other game to this degree. The other Souls games and Bloodborne haven't come close, either.

Dark Souls really is in a league of its own

It might not be, especially if you dislike redoing areas. I personally never did the boss run thing on my first playthrough. Mostly for the same reason about not wanting to abuse gamey mechanics I just killed everything on my way every time. Took me longer as a result but you get marginally stronger and learn the combat system better that way I guess. I didn't sprint to a boss until the next to last boss I faced in the game, and fuck that boss anyway.

That was where I bounced off the game back when it was still a GFWL title. It's also where the game totally clicked for me when I came back to it, for very specific reasons:

One) I found a weapon I liked. The Halberd. Love the move set, excellent range.

Two) I upgraded the Halberd as much as I could. The increased damage meant I could one-shot all those trash hollows. Furthermore, it meant the Gargoyle fight wasn't some insurmountable obstacle where I was chipping away health on two big bads who could throw me off the roof at any time. I eventually took out the first one before the second even joined in.

Both those things basically represented a paradigm shift in which I realized I could totally handle what the game was laying down. Before that, it really seemed like an exercise in frustration and masochism.

So i'm currently playing through Dark Souls for the first time and I started to read OP's post till about the Anor Londo part and heard his complaint about the archers.

I hadn't reached that point yet and so stopped reading so as not to spoil anything for myself in the future. My thought to his archer comment. "Heh clearly he's having a bit more trouble in this game than moi".

So about an hour ago I get to that archer part. And OP is right. FUCK THAT ARCHER!!! Many may complain about both, but the one on the left you can simply run past without ever getting hit. It's that ass that is standing in front of you blocking your path. WTF?! Who would place an enemy there?

I've already died about 4 times straight, and now i'm just running through most of the enemies to get to that part because I know my chances of dying are high. Had to put it down because we all know that playing Dark Souls frustrated is real productive.

Please hupla, can you ever forgive me?

You can avoid his giant arrows simply by jogging up towards the ledge. Don't even have to waste any stamina sprinting up there. Once you're on an even level with him, roll through his next arrow, run until you're in his face, and he'll pull out his sword. At this point, you can simply block his attacks until he falls off or just parry him.

When you get in the moment, and you're slaying dudes left and right and bosses are just falling beneath your blade.

Estus all over my face.

Oh man. That archer is the reason I hit a wall in this game. A wall that lasted over a full year. I came back to the game and started over from scratch. Got to the same archer and breezed through. Kept on until I hit the ending. Such an incredible experience. But I never want to play another Souls game. Because it was so good and I know no other will be as good.

I've been using this build and doing pretty well, although I just got cursed so now I have to go get myself uncursed.

The gargoyles went down pretty quickly, and I killed the Capra demon in one try (my previous attempt had me stuck at Capra for months).

I might actually win this time! If I can get myself uncursed. :\

Agreed. So far only Demon's comes close, but Dark Souls 1 is the perfect, finished article that I doubt FROM will ever beat.

The merchant in the Firelink -> Lower Undead Burg shortcut sells Purging Stones IIRC
