Microsoft Ending Xbox 360 Production

I still remember getting this at the midnight launch at GameStop and going home and immediately playing Condemned. That was a game changer for me and I knew I was in the next generation just from that game.

Then I spent HOURS playing Kameo and Call of Duty... what a great launch and amazing console.

Someone should do some kind of 2005-2016 avatar thing :)

I actually got my first 360 for free, on one of those advertisement subscription sign up campaigns that were all the rage in 2005!. I was honestly shocked when the xbox 360 turn up after selecting it as my 'gift' and there was me thinking those type of promotions were scams!!!

One of the best consoles of all time, period.
It had an amazing run, so many quality titles with infinite replayability, it'll go down in history as an amazing, groundbreaking platform.

Keeping mine and it's library until the end of time.

They havent done a price drop in ages, nor have they introduced a new model (again) to do that so it seems like they'd rather just focus on Xbox One, Windows 10 and beyond (per Phil Spencer)

I guess that makes sense and I assume the console has very little appeal in emerging markets.

The best shmup console of all time IMO. Cave and Treasure ports plus many original shmups like Eschatos and Strania make it better than the Saturn in my eyes. RIP X360

A sad day.

Never bought a launch model but I've gone through four different Slim's (impulsive). Here's to hoping they'll eventually let Live be free on the 360 but until then, I have a backlog to play through. I don't plan on buying another console for at least a couple more years when my 360 is either dead in the water or there's a cheaper mid-cycle update of current gen.

So when is Xbox Live getting shut off for the 360?

The XBLIG shutdown announcement specified that XBLIG titles will remain on sale through September 2017. So it's guaranteed to be no earlier than that, but IMHO it will probably be on until the numbers drop low enough to justify turning it off. That's exactly what they did with OG Xbox and I doubt they'll do it any differently with 360.

I think it's a safe bet that Sony will shut down PSN for PS3 first. With the lack of BC, and the fact that many of the more popular online titles have remasters/sequels already out on or coming to PS4 soon, I think their usage numbers will drop more quickly.

It had a fantastic run, damn. I think that I had a ton more fun in the first three years of last gen than I have so far this one. Sad to see the end of the 360 but I guess it's time.
I might pick up a cheap Slim model and throw it in storage for when my 360 dies. I don't foresee getting rid of my 700+ X360 games any time soon, so I might as well ensure that I have the capability to play them for a while longer.

I have a feeling that Sony will end sales on PSN for PS3 but not the network infrastructure. Remember it was ten years before they ended SOCOM II on PS2's online, so I don't see much change.

And people like me buy a lot on PSN for PS3, so hopefully it'll still be up for us to collect our trophies/download/play Super Stardust HD.

I could see them keeping it going for a while, Sony still supports the PSP, after all, including with titles and aspects the Vita doesn't. They partially shut down some access for the PSP, but you can still get games onto one via a PS3 or PC and Sony's still certifying games for the platform that haven't been released yet.

It's kinda off in some games, Trials Evolution has no user tracks or ghosts to download. Halo Reach has nothing either. don't think you can even upload screenshots, download forge stuff etc. I imagine it's like that for many games but I've noticed those two. Multiplayer works, the backbone but not the little extras unfortunately.

A fantastic console with my favourite controller of all time. Well done MS.

I don't personally see them doing this. If you stop selling things in your store, why would you keep paying rent on the space? It makes sense for them to keep the store open for as long as the network is there, right? Same thing for XBL.

Because you can still have access to content you purchased but not necessarily available for sale. Sony would get a huge backlash and a possible lawsuit if they shut everything down completely for PSN PS3 users.

PS Now connects to the same PS3-PSN infrastructure.

Why prevent people from making purchases? If people want to give you money, keep that going until sales decline so much that it actually costs more to run the infrastructure.

Like 360 HW is being discontinued, I can see PS3 HW being the same soon. But digital sales can continue on for several years so long as enough people are paying.

The latest 360 was running on 45nm chips, the fabrication plants for 45nm are likely dropping one by one, and at this point it's simply not worth redesigning the chip for a new node (a shrink isn't as trivial as it sounds).

I wonder if that's even a percent of the reason why Wii U production is being shuttered, lol. Even with its poor sales, being on 40nm in 2016 can't have much production availability.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I've never been a fan of the system, but I should buy a spare for when my US console inevitably bites the dust. There are a few good games on there that I'd want to play again.

This was the console that caused the huge change in my life. Although I don't want to admit it, it is my favourite console of all time (sorry all Sega consoles). That God-like system update that allowed it to support non Microsoft Xbox external HDs upto 2TB and then weekly deals with gold selling full priced titles for an insane low price is an awesome combo (I'm upto 200 installed games).

My favourite SE console is the Star Wars one (it makes R2D2 sounds!) and it's also the one that's lasted after my 3 previous RROD failures. I'd also like to that Andre/Scott at Microsoft for sending me FOC replacements for those even though I was way out of a location that offered support.

XBLA was stunning but stifled by the 2 game a week only policy and game size cap in the early days. But still, perfect versions of street fighter 3' Daytona, Radiant Silvergun, loads of Capcom fighters, 2D shumps. Once Games on Demand costs became reasonable that's a good service too.

Amazing looking at that and thinking it was on the same console as Halo 4 eh? Same hardware, nearly generational leap in what they could do with it.

That kind of thing...Well, not to bring it up in every thread, but squeezing all the juice out of consoles may fall by the wayside with certain developments.

This console, man. It changed much of my life. Thanks to the 360 and Xbox Live, I met the people who would become the best and closest friends I could have ever asked for. Got my 360 in early 2008 and sunk so much of my late High School years into hours upon hours of gaming. So many great games and memories were had, especially in those first few years. Wish I could relive them already. What a great run this bad boy had.

Goodnight sweet Prince.

The Summer of Arcade games in 2008 and 2009 were insane.

2008: BC: Rearmed, Braid, Castle Crashers, Geometry Wars 2

2009: MvC2, Shadow Complex, Splosion Man, Trials HD

whew
I remember SoA. It was an event those years.

The first update, NXE, is still the best dashboard Microsoft has had. Loved it. The themes were great too. Miss you Christmas 2008 theme!
