Microsoft Ending Xbox 360 Production

This would immediately go away if Sony decided to offer free online. Being the dominate console of this gen they can do that and Microsoft would have no choice but to follow.

This is not how business works. You do things like free online in order to attract demand and sales, not in response to your own high demand and sales. PSN was free since launch of PS3 and added new free features every year, and then PS+ was introduced as a huge value, and still the market remained loyal to XBL all throughout last generation.

Big companies last gen proved that gamers are willing to pay for anything that used to be expected from games, from microtransactions of avatar clothing to paying them a fee to connect you to another player on your own internet connection.

IIRC the Jasper revision of the original design (pre-slim) was the one that solved RROD. I remember buying mine in early 2009 and checking serial numbers or something to make sure it was a Jasper.

Yea I remember the Jaspers being the ones with the new chipset which were supposed to prevent the problem from happening again and even my 4th console was a Jasper which ended up lasting for years without a single hitch but was just wondering if anyone has experienced the RROD problems after the Jaspers but if they managed to fix it right there and then then definitely good on Microsoft. I remember it cost them a shitload to fix a lot of these issues out of warranty (I think it was like a billion dollars).

Xbox 360 was probably one of greatest consoles all of the time. It introduced a lot of great things like digital store, Xbox live, achievement, and many more. Also it had some great games and original Xbox backward compatibility (unfortunately, it got discontinued).

Xbox 360, you gave me so many great memories. Good bye, I'll never forget you.

I could have sworn they insisted that they'd be supporting the 360 after the point Sony discontinued support on the PS3.

360 was an amazing console. It's first couple years were unmatched, with First party games like Kameo, Gears, Mass Effect, Crackdown, Halo 3, and Viva Pinata. The dashboard and online service was really ahead of its time in 2005. Can't imagine what modern consoles would be without it.

Where did they say they drop support?

Perhaps support isn't the correct word. Looking the article up the headline says it would be in production for longer than the PS3 would be but the actual quote says it's "lifespan" would be longer, whatever that means exactly.

Well, it would be more interesting to know what you meant with dropping support. There will still be games made for the system, I guess, and especially as a platform it will live on. Especially because of bc xbl will of course live on, gwg will probably continue to deliver games for free... Ms wants Xbox to be a platform since the beginning and I don't see how dropping making hardware has negative impact on the 360.

So long. We had a good time, you and I.

So many fond memories. So much emotion. Microsoft will probably never again have a success story in the game industry like the 360. Despite its flaws with RROD and its deafening sound, Xbox 360 had so much going for it. That's why people forgave the messed up launch models and moved on. I still have my 360 plugged in, I use it now and then and I'll likely keep it plugged in for a few years still.

I like my Xbox One. It's not a bad console. But I truly doubt that I'll remember it as fondly as the 360. I know I won't.

I would consider support to be what I'd consider the lifespan of the product to be and I'd generally consider it going out of production to be the end of that and I don't seem to be alone as the article I pulled up seemed to equate the two.

It's crazy that it's last place worldwide for that generation, but only just behind the PS2(GOAT) across all gens in the US. It just shows how well it targeted the US audience.

I think it shows how Microsoft stopped caring about Europe after the Kinect release in 2010 while Sony pushed extremely hard during 2010-2013 with PS3.

My entrance into console gaming. Still have a slim. Great JRPG support including Lost Odyssey which for me was the best traditional JRPG of last generation.

Thanks for all the endless hours of fun Xbox 360! I remember going back from work one day in 2007 and buying it with Gears, Forza 2 and Dead Rising. Amazing times had online with friends!

I only just bought an Xbox 360 today. Never owned one before. Games I bought for it: Halo 3, 4, 3 ODST, Reach, Skate 3, Red Dead Redemption.

Truth.

Not much to add. Except, it created the new controller standard with home button.

And it had a phenomenal amount of great exclusives - Kameo, Condemned 1-2, PGR 3-4, Dead Rising, Gears of War 1-3 + Judgment, Halo 3-4 Halo ODST, Halo Reach, Halo Wars, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Crackdown, Crackdown 2, Alan Wake, Fable 2, Forza 2-4, Mass Effect... Just to mention a few from the top of my mind. Just an insane lineup of just exclusives, and on top of that often the best console versions of 3rd party games.

Amazing console.

When can I get a new one for $99 or less? I sold my old OG a while back but would love to have one in case i want to revisit any old 360 game.

Is it last place?

We have no official numbers.

Not only that but selling off inventory still counts as sales so end of production isn't the end of the count for now.

Not only that, it may get a couple games more as well.

Will go down in history as only one notch below Ps2. Fantastic machine, RROD aside. Not to mention its success made late-gen Ps3 as awesome as it was, second place Sony is truly best Sony lol.

Now Sony is back in first place, PS Plus sucks, and we get a dumb console refresh no one asked for.

But I digress, RIP 360, what a great console.

EDIT: Oh and also the first time I saw HD gaming. Call of Duty 2 blew my fucking mind when I saw it on an HDTV. This was in 2005 or 2006, when I still was playing Ps2 on a CRT. Insane. I'm sad I'll never have that moment again as jumps are much smaller now. Maybe VR?

Yes it's library was just as varied as the PS2, but with the addition of PC shared games along with the TP and 1st exclusives, and better version of games shared with PS3. It also got shared and improved PS2 shared games and Wii shared games.

It's pretty much a hub for most of the games released last gen.

But seriously it was a great console after that shaky first year.

Really sucks they couldnt bring the price any lower before the end.

I think it was the memory (added on top of the console built) that is preventing them from dropping.

If you recall the only $99 Xbox console in recent times was when the 4GB slim without Kinect was an entry level option or a cheap way to upgrade tot he slim.

But the Slim is as a pretty nice piece of hardware and thigs run a bit faster and it has all those "touch" button that do things automatically. Same with the E, it had proprietary parts and half the time unless you are lucky you had to order replacements from MS because most stores didin't have them. The Slim is much better than E though.

In otherwords MS going for the sexy look probably costed them a chance to drop to $99.

Now PS3 I don't get the Superslim is super cheap, and it has like 12GB of memory wtf.

I had so many great moments on the Xbox 360, playing games like Skyrim, the Mass Effect trilogy, the Gears trilogy, Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia were some of the most fun I have ever had gaming.

The early launch of the 360 really did a number on most of the American games press who spent the whole generation convinced that MS was running away in the sales race, when the reality was the PS3 outsold the 360 every year they were both available.
