Miyazaki talks future of Dark Souls series, Armored Core and a new IP

I just want to, like, forever play games with Dark Souls type mechanics. I started games like this with Bloodborne and then Dark Souls III and just like that they've become my absolute favorite style of game.

When I hear 'new ip' I get skeptical. Dark souls was a 'new ip' and so was bloodborne. I realize he said 'new direction' but that could easily be 'space souls' with 'stardust' for currency instead of souls, holodisplays instead of bonfires etc. I'd wait for a little more confirmation before assuming anything about this 'new direction'

Don't get me wrong, I remember the laughable debates about how bloodborne was a 'new ip' and totally not a souls game. Hilarious nonsense for sure. Just saying, take this with a grain of salt. Personally I don't want another soils style game any time soon.

Haha, can you imagine how tired Miyazaki is of all the Souls questions? He's probably thinking, "seriously people? We have given you 5 souls games in 7 years. Can we please work on something else?" I would be sick of it too. I mean, these questions wouldn't have even happened if it was not for Miyazaki taking a chance, starting a new IP, and revolutionizing the industry with Demons Souls. Let him do something else, and who knows? Maybe he will create another "demons souls" that changes the industry again.

But no, the game industry is perfectly fine with stagnation.

They need to take a Souls break. Like the next few games they release need to not have anything to do with Souls style gameplay for now. Dont want it to become a semi-annual expected game.

Create a new type RPG, old franchise revival, or new type of mecha game...

That's exactly how I feel too. Bloodborne is one of my favorite games, but it does sound like they're moving on from Soulsborne. Or at least the A team at From is moving on. I'm thankful that I'll get to enjoy Dark Souls 3 for at least another year with the planned DLC.

Thats all cool but Dark Souls fans get to have three games and Bloodborne fans get only one? Not fair. I need atleast another one at some point. I dont mind if they come back to BB after their new IP.

He has the right idea. 5 amazing games in a series spanning 7 years is enough, they need to give it a rest. I want to see what else they can do with their talent.

The new IP is the one they are working with Sony I guess based on insiders at GAF. It is another JRPG.
So we're stuck with bad frame pacing and 30fps :(

Yeah they're just gonna be recycling the same shit if they continue releasing games as frequently as they have been.

Bloodborne and DS3 are some of the best games in the series though.
If that's the level of quality we get from stagnation, then I say: let's stagnate some more!

They can do better. Right now they're just milking that formula. As good as the games are they can do better. I think Bloodborne is an amazing game so don't get me wrong

Never played an Armored Core game, they never looked appealing to me.

Having said that, I adore the DS games.

Are there any similarities? What makes AC so great? If I wanted to try one, which one?

Armored Core please! There is a severe lack of Mech games in my life. Gundam Extreme VS Force on the Vita can only go so far. Still waiting for the english translation of Gundam Breaker 3. The japanese import is so expensive right now on my local gamestore.

For me I adored the ludicrously deep customization and the ludicrously fast combat (esp. in the later titles). IMO, there is nothing like this right now in current gaming:

Single player campaign was fun and challenging, but amounted to for the most part a series of one off missions. For me it was always a means to an end of getting the money for parts for split screen and multiplayer. While there was a super steep learning curve in both mastering controls/tactics and in learning how to build competitive mechs, once you got there there was nothing like it. And even before you got there dicking around against friends in split screen was a blast.

The best way to see if you'd enjoy it is to look up the YT let's plays or gameplay videos of the different games in the series. Each one plays rather differently from generation to generation but they all feature very heavy customization.

If it is like Bloodborne all I know is I will be stuck with the game of this generation.

It makes me really sad that Dark Souls it's kinda done for a while...These games got me back loving games again...I understand everyone has faith in them for new projects, but well, i don´t have and i don´t get the "souls fatigue" at all. We have garbage every year that everyone plays but now that we have something "different" we want it to be over. I don´t get it, but well. I'll wait for the next project of From.

I could just as easily say I don't get why people want another Souls when they've been getting them 5 out of the past 7 years. They might be different from other games but they're not different enough within themselves. People say Soulsborne because even though BB was a bit of a departure from Souls, it's still very familiar. Why do you want them stuck making the same game all the time? Why not give them the freedom to make some else that's also good?

I feel the same way but I mean, we're getting three huge Dark Souls 3 DLCs so I mean, can't really ask for more than that. We got Dark Souls 1,2 and 3 along with Bloodborne in 5 years. As much as I love these games and they've become pretty important to me. I'd like them to go on and create new awesome shit.

Maybe you are right and maybe i should be happy that now they have the resources to capitalize their recent success.

Anyways they are going to try new things regardles of how i feel so we'll see what they have to offer next.

You make it sound like gamers are holding the developers hostage. You can talk about creative freedom all you want but light bills need to be paid at the studio and a sure thing is a sure thing. There is a willing captive audience and that doesn't happen as often as it should for once niche creators. Creative freedom is a double edged sword in that it can bore that audience who is being bombarded with other options too. So keeping what works in spirit is the best course of action IMO.

I am not ready to let go of Souls. So sad. The best thing in gaming in years. Hope new IP is as ground breaking.

I don't know how well off they are, but they seem to do better and better each game. If they're comfortable enough to experiment, go for it. If they need the money, pop out another Souls I guess. I expect they will someday.

Ain't my fault if it came off as holding the devs hostage. People don't want them to stop, even after releasing these 5 out of the past 7 years. People want whatever they do next to have Souls mechanics. People want the sci fi game Miyazaki mentioned wanting to make to be a sci fi Souls.

Man, thinking about it, I really want an Armored Core that has a city hub with all the corporations on different parts of the map, and then you get shipped off to do missions for the corporations...while the city hub has a slice of life of the future in Armored Core...

maaaan. That would be so cool and cozy. Just walking up to the Murakumo Millenium building in the far distance, going past stores selling robot parts among other things...taking a shortcut past a shady alley where they sale black market parts....

nah from software was always leaning more towards sony. wouldnt be surprised if dark souls is the only multiplat franchise for now

i dont really care either way unless its a souls spinoff which he clearly denied ... i just hope the gameplay is similar
The opposite is far more likely. Souls blew up because it was on everything (and the PC user base played a huge part in it).

They are now backed by a strong financial sugardaddy (Kadokawa) and their retail partner overseas doubles down on the multiplatform strategy too (like all big-ish Bamco games are on PC too).
Multiplatform is the way to go for them. And don't believe everything Verendus said.

Edit: And yay, no BB2.

See guys? The chances of Bloodborne 2 happening are slim, if this interview is anything to go by. Don't act like it's a certainty.

Honestly, I love the Souls games so much I think I could just play them forever.

What they should do is just have other teams working on forever Souls games and then the rest of them can make new shit.

Surely Namco wont want to just sit on the franchise? If nothing else I hope a pile of Souls clones keep coming out (like Lords of the Fallen) so I can at least play them. :(

Happy to hear that he's moving on to different things he wants to do, but the Souls series being over is really just now setting in.

To be fair. It could still mean we can get more souls type games.

A sci fi game, for example, in a new world with some new game mechanics but the same core ideas for the gameplay would still be a new IP.

I doubt Rockstar considers Red Dead a Gta Spin-off despite the fact that it's basically GTA: Wild West edition

But anyway. I'm happy to hear confirmation that they will let Dark Sould rest, at least for a while.
Better to move on while your franchise is still good than milk it to death until no one cares about it anymore

Armored Core is one of my most beloved series. Honestly though there needs to be a lot of changes in the way they go about making those games. There is complex for game play sake then there is complex to be complex but its not really that complex, just a shit ton of menus and in game world gibberish and confusing graphs, AKA Armored Core 5.

Really gotta find the right balance with AC which I feel like they never have, no matter how much I enjoyed the titles. Especially effing 5. Made it so damn confusing and tedious to play.

For the Demon's Souls faithful:

Q: So we won’t be seeing a Demons’s Souls sequel or remaster any time soon?

A: We want to try making new things.
That's not what GAF wanted to read D=
I don't know what GAF you're talking about, because Miyazaki and co working on new shit is exactly what I wanted to read.

I want a sequel to Bloodborne so badly, but at the same time, I'm totally ok with a new IP.

I guess it's fine if Bloodborne ends up as a standalone project. It's not like I'm going to get tired of it anytime soon.

I thought Miyazaki's comment about no plans for sequels or spin-offs was specifically about Dark Souls, and has nothing to do with Bloodborne.

Probably revealed during Sonys E3.

Both Verendus and BruceLeeRoy hinted that PlayStation will be FROMs home for this gen.

Maybe. I think people take "spin-offs" to mean Bloodborne, but it's entirely possible he considers the two properties to be completely separate.

Personally, I am happy he's moving on. He's probably running out of "Souls" ideas. DS3 lost some good ideas from DS2 and didn't really added anything great. Let the B team continue with the "Soul" advancements while he works on something else.
