MESA, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) -

A student at Red Mountain High School in Mesa is facing dozens of criminal charges for indecent exposure after a prank got published in the yearbook, according to the Mesa Police Department.

The student exposed himself in the varsity football team picture, Det. Steve Berry said. Approximately 3,400 students received a yearbook with the image before it was brought to the attention of school officials. The photo was also used in the football program, which was sold at numerous games to students and families, according to court paperwork.

Berry said police were made aware of the picture on Saturday. The student, 19-year-old Hunter Osborn, was contacted and interviewed about the picture.

Osborn, who was 18 when the picture was taken, told investigators he was dared to reveal his privates by a football teammate and said he was "disgusted" with himself, according to court paperwork.

The photo of the Red Mountain High School varsity football team was taken while players and coaches were on the football field bleachers.

There were 69 students, ranging in age from 15 to 19, and 10 faculty members present when the picture was taken. Police said Osborn knowingly exposed the top of his penis through the top of the waistband of his football uniform pants during the photo session.

Based on the photo and admission, Osborn was booked for 69 counts of indecent exposure -- a class 1 misdemeanor -- and one count of furnishing harmful items to minors -- a class 4 felony.

And now the Daily News' take:

Daily News said:
An Arizona student-athlete came up short in getting away with a yearbook prank.

Red Mountain High School student Hunter Osborn, 19, faces a whopping 69 counts of indecent exposure after authorities say he flashed his genitals in the football team’s yearbook photo, according to KPNX-TV.

The stiff punishment accounts for each person present at a photoshoot where Osborn let his penis hang out over the waistband of his football pants in the now-tarnished photo obtained by the TV station.

He also faces one felony count of furnishing harmful items to minors.

Osborn defended the brazen stunt to police as a dare by his teammates.

The blip of nudity went unnoticed for months — overshadowed by a sea of red uniforms until after the school printed and distributed the annuals to about 250 students, KNXV-TV reported.

The Mesa school admittably failed to notice Osborn’s feat due to the “small size of the photograph” and published it in promotional material distributed at football games throughout the school year.

Mock if old.

Seems like a dumb high school kid doing dumb high school kid things. This kind of stuff happened every now and again when I was in HS and the most that ever happened was a suspension.

Hopefully they drop most of these charges. A felony could really ruin this kid's future, let alone if he's required to register as a sex offender or something.

So many charges for what equates to the prank severity of somebody getting pantsed.

Stupid kid did something stupid. Shouldn't be on his record for life.

Awesome prank but...sounds like someone just got ice burned.

Someone in my class did something like this, using a photo we took on a class trip in which he exposed himself (I took the photo) for his week-long "senior showcase", where seniors put memorabilia and pictures in a centrally-located trophy case for the school to see.

It didn't end well. No charges were filed though; everyone only found out because he went around telling everyone.

This is the problem with people overreacting to every minor offensive incident.

In a week (or less) whoever was offended by this will have gotten over it, and his life could be pretty messed up for a long time depending on which charges they drop.

He should be suspended. Kids should learn that their dumb actions have consequences. But giving him a criminal record for this is just wrong.

Making him an example, not like he was doing something sexual in nature. Shit I bet most of the staff hadn't seen a nice young piece of pork in a long time, did them a favor.

In my yearbook, a guy doing the triple jump on the track team had his balls noticeably exposed unknowingly in his short track shorts. Wasn't intentional at all (he wasn't the kind of kid to do something like that intentionally) but now it's saved forever in the annals of my high school yearbook.

Based on the photo and admission, Osborn was booked for 69 counts of indecent exposure -- a class 1 misdemeanor -- and one count of furnishing harmful items to minors -- a class 4 felony.

Man I think this is a over-reaction. Maybe you suspend him or don't let him walk at graduation, but c'mon... 69 counts of indecent exposure? I imagine that's because of the 69 people in the photo all of whom have seen his penis before before and after games in the locker room. It's not right to take your junk out, and I think you should get suspended and disciplined in the school for it, but a criminal charges seem too harsh a penalty for the stupid prank. I'd imagine the photo is also so damn small, and he's one of 69 people in the photo, that you probably couldn't discern his hands from his penis anyway.

It's really not, in the context of broader issues. The idea that seeing a breast or penis is one of the worst things you could have happen to you is absolutely ridiculous and is the root cause of things like the bathroom laws we're seeing pop up. (Alongside the belief that men are inherently predatory and women are inherently prey.)

Him getting prosecuted is ridiculous

I had a friend who was on the football team, and he really hated the coach. I guess the coach was busting his balls more than the other guys or something, not sure. But they were talking about doing something in the team photo too, and he wound up not doing it. About an hour after the photo was taken, he finally had enough shit and went, "suck my ass, coach" and walked off for good. So in everyone's yearbook, he just wrote "suck my ass" over the coach in the photo.

He didn't furnish harmful items to minors, the yearbook committee did. Charge them with the felony.
Exactly. This is why there are whole groups dedicated to the yearbook. This kid didn't publish it. What about the faculty who ought to have approved it?

A felony? Really?

So what? No one was harmed, and he didn't publish and distribute the yearbook personally.

How about a proportional punishment instead of ruining his fucking life over nothing?

Oh hey!

Story from my home town. Very Mormon High school too, so I will not be surprised if they decide to ruin this kids life forever.

People used to pull their nuts out all the time in high school. "Look at my tumor lol" type shit. Not ok but people are dumb in high school myself included. Don't screw the kid with a felony for the top of his penis in a tiny photograph that no one could even see.

US 'justice' system issuing disproportionate sentences yet again. In Europe he would be given community service/fined or something.

Remember kids: sex is evil and you should be ashamed of the disgusting body that nature cursed you with.

For real though. I nearly got suspended in middle school for putting a banana in my pants among my group of friends. My only saving grace was that the vice principle liked me because I would be at the batting cages everyday before school and he liked my work ethic. If it wasn't for him rip

Furnishing harmful items to minors? Was he on the yearbook committee and the one that published that picture?

Ridiculous. It's just a harmless prank. Hell every year at the high school I graduated from, there are always streakers at the graduation ceremony. It's pretty much tradition at this point and nobody gets offended. My god the horror of seeing a penis lol.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
all of them will get dropped and he'll pay a small fine.

mostly just funny and sad that he got charged with a sex crime for a prank

A punishment is probably in order, but not a felony. I think he'd do well enough with a slap on the wrist. And has been noted, the inability of the faculty to catch it could make them complicit.

We had a streaker at my graduation, everyone knew she was going to do it so we were all standing up trying to see. The school tried to not give her her diploma, but that was it. What the fuck is wrong with the world when a kid doing something this dumb as a prank is going to get you registered as a sex offender or the like.

Damn. Makes me wonder about that naked lap I had to run around the outside of the dorm in college.

All it would have taken was some easily offended person to walk by at that time and I would've been fucked.
