Battlefield 1 Reveal Trailer, PC/PS4/XB1, Oct 21st [Up2: Screens, Info, Open Beta]

This turns my stomach. Just flat out the most offensive game I've ever seen.

I can name family members that died in this conflict, wept at the pictures and accounts of the dead and maimed that experienced this hell, was taught all the horrors of it from primary school, through my whole life, it's only ever been a symbol of the folly of war, the worst, most black and shameful era of British and European history. I've been to the actual battlefields and mass graves across Europe, held the minutes silence without fail every rememberence day my entire life, for as long as I could understand the meaning of it.

There was no glory in this war. No thrilling action or daring do, no heroes and villains, this was mass murder, a scar on the history of our species, and every single person involved in it was a victim.

This trailer, the entire concept of this game, makes me feel physically sick, and just so fucking angry.

How fucking dare anyone make a game like this about the First World War.

I don't know what's worse, the sick fucking emotionless, greedy cunts that would seriously exploit this horror of an industrialised massacre, or the ignorant, soulless bastards that will give them money and enjoy it.

Anyone involved in this, or seriously think of buying this, should be ashamed of themselves.

Humans are destructive by nature and it's despicable, it truly is. However, WW1 is not the only 1 war killing millions of humans. WW2 has a higher death toll. Even the colonization of US has a higher death estimate. It's personal and I get that, but when one only sees personal strife they see no other. We are all one, and all war are fruitless.

Oh the balls on them to not only go back to WW1, but to mix the trailer to the Glitch Mob's Seven Nation Army remix AND call it Battlefield 1?!

This may be the first battlefield game I play since Vietnam. Sold - assuming there's a single player.

In a war that had an estimated total of 15 to 18 million casualties, yes that is insignificant in the grand scheme of things which is all I've been saying from the very beginning.

And I'll repeat myself one last time: It doesn't bother me that Dice is including black soldiers in a prominent role despite the historical insignificance.

You say that, but the things you keep saying make it seem somewhat otherwise. This isn't a history book, it's a game. They're going to tell specific stories.

Also, at the time, it was significant based on their race alone. It may not mean shit to you, but it does have some value to others.

I'll take your word on it though and apologize for being aggressive.

I am sorry but I don't see how drawing a line in the sand with this game works. It was an atrocious war, but they all are. If you have an issue with violence in video games, that's one issue, but to take up the banner against this one conflict doesn't make sense. Do you think the Vietnamese or Americans shouldn't have been upset about BF Vietnam? Is WWII not in a way shameful for the Germans? Yet we played the crap out of that. If you are taking a moral stand against war games in general, I understand, but taking up the rallying charge against only this is selfish and completely degrades your argument.

"There was no glory in this war. No thrilling action or daring do, no heroes". Your ancestors should slap the shit out of you for saying that. They answered their nations call no matter how wrong it may have been. I don't agree with the war I fought in but I'd never degrade the sacrifices I made or that my brothers did. We volunteered to fight for our nation, no matter the cause. There may not have been glory as a nation, but there was glory and heroes among the men that fought it. Wars have not changed at all since this moment and never will. We bombed mercilessly in WWII, Vietnam, and present day. Do you think the people that we bombed in Iraq and AFG felt different than those men in the trenches? They had nothing to defend themselves against our technology and weaponry.

How fucking dare anyone make a game like this about the First World War. How dare you act like your sacrifice is different than any other generation or any other nation. You put your foot down when it comes to this, but not when it effects others? What kind of coward are you? This is where you draw the line? If you have a principle, stand up for it in full, no when it casts an ugly light on the actions of your ancestors.

I'm not sure what I think of their handling of this yet. As I posted earlier...

But if you are going to cry foul to this, cry foul to the whole industry, for everyone that would be effected, not just your own. This war is unique in scale only. Time will tell if they've handled this properly. It's clear from this thread that there's plenty of misinformation about this war, and the game has probably already resulted in more people going out to learn about i than anything else. Wouldn't reminding the public of the atrocities do more good than harm? Besides reminding you how shameful it makes you of your countries history?

This, this so much.

I don't know man. I've been told my whole life that drug dealers and murderers are bad, yet people enjoy GTA just fine. Now I've learned to block my brain when it comes to videogames. That being said, how is it different from other multiplayer WWII games that you can play as a Nazi soldier?

I think most are ready for a change, and going back to explore a REAL conflict, especially one that hasn't been touched by AAA, seems to resonate. That combined with the incredible graphical power of Frostbite leads to hype.

Could you make sure the console versions get an FoV slider like Mirrors Edge?

Danke

So, is there actually an alt history bend to this? I see people saying it, but I'm not sure where it comes from?

I think it was an assumption based on his stylized garb and early rumors. I think a lot of people thought the club/bludgeon was something it was, too.

Kotaku also ran with an "alt-WWI" story and later retracted it.

Yeah, two years later. BF3 was also a mess at launch.

You don't get to release garbage and then turn around and pretend like it never happened. They need to prove themselves first.

Battlefront I will not comment on, but Hardline was basically an expansion pack for BF4 that was meant to exploit a yearly release schedule.

I generally agree--they need to prove themselves--but BF4 was in much better shape a year after launch, not two years. I know, it was still a year, but I think it represented a fundamental shift in how they approached their Battlefield games...I hope.

That's exactly why it doesn't bother me, it's just a game. And I have a feeling this is a once in a lifetime thing as far as big AAA world war 1 goes, so it's fine that they're representing as much as possible.
And apology accepted, it's all good.

So the countless games about the Vietnam war, WW2, the Iraq war, etc. are just fine. But just because you had family members involved in WW1 it's suddenly off limits to do anything with?

Not usually into the Battlefield games. I do think WWI provides a really compelling (imo, the most compelling) historical canvas to paint a pacifist message amidst the insanity of war, I hope they don't squander the opportunity with the single player campaign.

Troll post or not, this is a perfect response. Bravo, sir.

As for concerns of weapon variety, I can see them taking liberty and doing some kind of "Experimental Weapons" DLC a few months in that adds more variety. They did it with BF 1942.

Ah well, disappointing for me, that was probably the hook for me, but not really interested otherwise. Hope those who wanted older time periods enjoy it, though

I was on the fence but i'm definitely going to buy the game now and convince my brother to get a copy as well.

Seriously though how did you feel when all the WWII games were flooding the market?

So basically the lack of knowledge people had on ww1 let to journalists thinking it was an alt-history game with the stylization.

If you're serious, I completely respect this point of view. Not sure it makes sense to soap box on THIS game, and this game right NOW, but yeah, your post is understandable.

Honestly, tweet to the devs, voice your opinion and maybe you'll change some minds.

Not to be a negative Nancy, but gaming side GAF will get you nothing but "lol, it's a game! Lol buying ultimate hardcore edition"

In the meantime, don't let this kill you.

Looks interesting, but I wasn't really impressed by Battlefront or Battlefield 4.

That being said, I look forward to seeing more details at E3.

Am I the only one concerned that EA is basically trying to make games cost $80?

The early enlister edition includes very little aside from the 3 days early thing.

The thing is that without buying this edition you would get it on a Friday.

So you're paying more money to get it on the day it would have released anyway, on Tuesday

Am I the only one who thinks they should have gone with a roman numeral ?
i.e. 'Battlefirld I'

Kinda makes since because the first and second world wars are usually abbreviated WWI and WWII, but then again BF always uses normal numbers. I kinda wished it was spelled out, but then it would seem even more like they're copying Xbox One.

Companies have been trying this for the past five years. Inflation is real, and the bigger games get the more they cost. I'm surprised they even offer $60 versions of these huge games still.
