DOOM – Launch Trailer

Were Wolf review copies withheld? If so then that is strange because TNO is solid. I could've sworn there were reviews that hit on launch day.
Bethesda provided TNO review copies, but had an embargo for release day, meaning those who purchased on release day potentially might not have read reviews. Bethesda has straight up not sent out review copies of Doom 16. Meaning, reviewers are getting retail copies for review, delaying any and all reviews well past launch day. Significant difference. Bethesda are ensuring that potential customers do not have professional reviews available to them to guide purchasing decisions for as long as possible.

Well, that's not a very confident move.

Brb, cancelling pre-order.

For those who preordered the PC version of Doom, where did you guys preorder from? Steam? GMG? CD Keys? Somewhere else?

I preordered from steam tonight, as you get a free copy of Wolfenstein Old Blood for PC. I played TNO on PS4 but never played Old Blood, heard it's good.

I personally love the DOOM games, loved the Doom 3 SP campaign, and I'm mostly in for the SP for this latest release. I played the MP beta and I wasn't too impressed. Will wait for it to be patched a few times before trying again.

Surprised they aren't sending out review copies. They aren't shying away from advertising this game at all. It was on the round timer during the canelo vs khan fight which I am sure wasn't cheap. Seems like they are relying on heavy advertising to sell the copies instead.

I am in this game for the SP and probably won'the touch MP much at all. Looking forward to playing this game if it has the same feel that TNO did.

Yeah my reasoning to play Doom was for the campaign. I hope that's actually good and worth the price.

Ah, sorry, I misread your post. Mind you, I'd argue that there isn't much of a difference from a consumer perspective between launch day reviews and those published the day after release as the intention in both cases is to stifle pre-release opinions on the final product and in both cases pre-orders have already transmogrified into purchases.

I don't see the big deal really. Just pretend the date got pushed back a week and wait for reviews. Nothing has to be bought day one.

Agreed. If you're unsure about a game why do you NEED a game day 1? Kind of a paradox.
Personally I'm not too concerned. Reviewers are no more qualified than any of us on GAF so their opinions don't matter much.

Is it possible this is the reason they haven't sent out review copies? Maybe they're working on the game til the last possible second and don't want an unfinished game reviewed.

The game would have to be in playable state to pass certification on consoles before retail copies could be manufactured and the PC version was recently demoed on a GTX 1080 running at up to 200fps.

True although they could have picked a polished area for the pc demo and Just Cause 3 passed console certification.

I'm sure you're right though, was just looking for another reason to hold back review copies besides a lack of confidence.

Just Cause 3 is playable, even if the framerate tanks more often than not. The launch version of Skyrim PS3, on the other hand, arguably should not have passed certification as it literally stops working for seconds at a time if your save file is "large" -- but it's entirely possible that the issue didn't rear its head during certification as the testers wouldn't have progressed through the game for hours upon hours.

Again I just can't see how this would be a terrible game from everything I've personally seen or played so far. Who knows though.

Any links to streams from people who've got it early?

I haven't seen any early copies out in the wild yet. Place I usually go to hadn't gotten their copies yet as of Friday.

Gamespot have some SP footage :

This game looks atrocious with a controller, I mean this is so slow....

The PC version demoed impressed me greatly with its speed and focus on precision, it's actually amazing to see such a difference between PC and consoles level of playability.

It's a little sad that this trailer is 3 days old with only 500,000 views while BF1 trailer is only 1 day old and currently at 14M views already.

Got nothing against BF1, it's just a little sad how only few cares about the old classic style games like DooM.

I hope this will sell well, it looks great.

PS4 version actually looks pretty amazing I think, this new engine seems awesome, don't know why Dishonored 2 is running on idtech5.

Hyperbole, thy name is Kezen.

There's nothing atrocious-looking about it. I really hope the OT doesn't get fouled up with inane system war nonsense.

Wow the soundtrack is legit based on this stream. He's just got to hell and the music is giving me legit Doom 2 vibes.

Also small thing but if you get killed via execution you can load checkpoint during rather than watch yourself get your arms ripped off.

Really liking the music as well. Wish there was an option to have it play more. I like Mick Gordons style.

Had to drive almost 200 km, but it's in my hands.

Will post some impressions later on, but consider that I'm among those who loved the multiplayer. :p

Nice. I wonder if my store got it in this weekend. I would like to get a copy but I'm going to be playing this one on PC. Been playing UC4 in the meantime to hold me over.

One of the concerns I voiced was variety of Hell levels; that they're not all just fire and brimstone and have some genuine diversity. I think that's probably the case watching this. Some really well designed environments.

My only concern is that the game will have very little story to it. I know most probably prefer little to no story in their shooters but I am the exact opposite. I hope there is some story to it at least.

Without giving anything away, it seems there is. It isn't the focus, and it isn't exactly "The Last of Us".

After playing Wolfenstein TNO this week I'm inclined to agree with you!

The story is simple..you are marine in space trapped in hell and need to get out..fight like hell..end of story.

Doom never was about story look at doom 1 and 2 sure there is a little background about what happend but who cares? I never did i just went in and shoot demons in the face.

I hope there will be romances and a dialogue wheel where I can express my feelings for those poor beasts I'm about to slaughter.

It would not be Doom without that.

Haven't really been following the development of the new Doom, but I do know that people were unhappy with the enemy highlights and the melee kills and that it looked very dull. However, just watched the launch trailer and some of Gamespot's livestream and it looks really fun to play.

The highlights don't bother me, the movement and combat seems quick and fluid and the melee kills are very quick and look great. Like the addition of the map returning and more exploration for hidden items. Will definitely pick this up at some point. Also considering it's on consoles, they've made it quite customisable in terms of how the hud looks etc.

I think Quantic Dream should make the next Doom game. ;)

To be honest whilst I disliked Doom 3's big focus on narrative, I was always fascinated with Doom's story as a kid. I was actually really looking forward to the movie until they turned it into Resident Evil!

Could be interesting who knows.

It's unfathomable they have not already, they are the perfect fit.

Imagine that.

A story-driven Doom with plenty of QTEs where the player is a transgender, bisexual (who grew up in tough neighbourdood ,had to eat catfood to survive and served as a janitor in a Whole Foods) soldier confused about his sexual identity sent to pacify Hell with speeches about tolerance, acceptation of otherness, and how love conquers all.

In the end the monsters stop fighting and same-monster marriages are made legal, demons decorate houses and open hairdressing businesses.

Guaranteed to be greenlit.

There is but purely as optional pickups so for folks that don't want story they can just ignore it and go on with the shooting,

If you want some cutscenes or the ability to talk to the demons I doubt you'll be getting them.

Nah I was more or less hoping for a story structure like Doom 3 had. A few cutscenes, some audio logs... nothing to crazy but some stuff going on.

I'm interested in the story of DOOM, but it should definitely be an aside, or cleverly tucked away. It just doesn't seem to get on with the arcadey action.

DOOM 3 has unskippable cutscenes, which make a boring game even harder to replay, and the PDAs are just dull.

The codex is a good idea, and I'm interested in the optional monitor videos that id showed off in the stream.

DOOM has some potential for some really good pulp grindhousey sci-fi material, but it should never focus on the story for too long and definitely not make its cutscenes unskippable. They made two DOOM RPGs for mobile phones actually. The sequel that focused around an actual story, supplemented by an optional comic book, ended up worse for wear coincidentally enough.

Not that sad really

I have a ton of love for classic doom but this doesn't look close enough to that for me

I think almost everything about it has looked terrible, not to mention the trailers

Shane Satterfield said on his podcast that Beth said it had something to do with network functionality not being turned on for SnapMap.
